Dare we go into the DARK WET CAVE? | Cave Stream | Broken River | Castle Hill | South Island | NZ
Exploring Cave Stream Scenic Reserve
John & Anne go on an adventure, climbing huge boulders and walking dangerous cliff edges in search of the entrance to the Cave Stream. Once they find it, they wade through chest high, icy cold water in the darkness to get through to the other end.
The Cave Stream meets with the Broken River at Cave Stream Scenic Reserve, which lies in the Castle Hill Basin, between Arthur's Pass and Christchurch, in the South Island of New Zealand.
It's an awesome experience and totally worth doing!
If you're travelling to New Zealand and looking for things to do in the South Island, this should be one of them.
Full Story (on Medium) -
How to go through Cave Stream ★
How to go through cave stream. ★ AND how to get to Cave Stream. Cave stream scenic reserve. Castle Hill Basin. Things to do in south island.
It's just past Castle Hill and Castle Hill village, in west canterbury. Take the west coast road as if you are going to Arthur's pass. Go through Sheffield and Springfield, and about 1 hour from Christchurch, New Zealand... you will reach Cave Stream on the right hand side of the road. Don't miss the turnoff! It's not exactly well signposted, it's a small car park.
How to go through Cave Stream:
You need the following: sturdy footwear, preferably boots. Like hiking boots or army boots. With ankle support. Thermal leggings, and ideally thermal undergarment for your top also. Something warm on top like a polar fleece, perhaps a beanie. A wetsuit is another option. You are basically preparing for being cold and wet inside the cave, because you WILL be both cold and wet. It is not warm in the cave. If it is 25 degrees C outside, it will be 10 degrees C inside.
The safest way through is walk down the hill to the exit, the hole where the water comes out. Walk against the current. The cave is almost 600m long so eat something beforehand, you will get tired if you're not fit. Do NOT bring small children in the cave. Too dangerous for them. Only fit athletic people should attempt to go in the same direction as the water flows, as there is a greater risk of the water flow pushing you off balance. Which is bad, you don't want to fall down in the cave and get even wetter, or worse... you don't want to have an injury by hitting any of the rocks in there.
Weather conditions: Do not enter if it has been raining the day before, or on the day. This will raise the water level even higher. Even under ideal weather conditions the water ranged from knee deep to waist deep. Do not enter if the water is foaming or discoloured.
Lights: Ideally bring a headlamp. A light source that can attach to your body and leave your hands free. You will want hands free so you can use your hands to grip the rocks walls and keep yourself balanced. Bring a backup light source, like another torch, spare batteries, or chemical glowsticks. The cave is pitch black and without light you could face serious dangers to yourself (injury, hypoerthermia) without being able to see where you are going.
Lastly: It's best to enter with a friend, or a group. For safety reasons. The idea being, if somebody falls and hurts themselves, the other can assist that person to get out of the cave. Lives have been lost by people not entering the cave under ideal circumstances.

Decided to explore the cave & we definitely didn't expect the current to be that strong. It took us nearly 2 hours to finish the trip.
Overall, it was a pretty cool & scary experience at times.

Cave Stream
Cave Stream Day 9
Video Diary 1504204, Underground at Cave Stream
Between Castle Hill & Arthurs Pass there is an unusual site called Cave Stream, it is exactly that, a small stream or creek flows underground for about half a kilometre, those that want to get wet and cold, can walk in the stream through the cave, is is literaly more like a tunnel starting at about 8-10 meters round narrowing down to about 2.5m, water is cold, and not far off the road, worth seeing for sure.
Capturing the beauty of Cave Stream Scenic Reserve - I heart NZ - HD
One of my favourite day trips from Christchurch. Just over an hour's drive and boom you get to this scenic reserve. My video doesn't do the place justice but I have tried to capture how much fun this place has to offer. Shot with NX1 + 16-50/2.8S and GoPro4.
Cave Stream Walkthrough
Castlehill in Canterbury NZ. Provided waterlevels are suitable and no rain is forecast, this is a straightforward introduction to caving suitable for most people :) Takes around 40mins total.

Cave Stream Walk 8th Feb 2015 also known as Broken River and is part of the Castle Hill basin
The Cave Stream Scenic Reserve sits among spectacular limestone outcrops, with views of the Craigieburn and Torlesse Ranges.
A 362 metre long cave within the reserve is one of the most outstanding natural features in the Canterbury region. The open country is ideal for picnicking and gentle short walks.

I went with a bunch of mates to do the Cave Stream walk situated between Porters Pass and Arthur's Pass. It was good fun and great that you could do it without any special equipment or guiding. As always the GoPro was there. Enjoy in full high definition.

NZ Cave Stream

Cave Stream - 17th January 2015
The lady and I went on an adventure today to Cave Stream. Cave Stream is a 594 metre long underground channel that water has carved out of limestone. At it's deepest, the cave is waist deep and is pitch black the entire way through. Cave Stream Scenic Reserve is located in Canterbury, New Zealand. Sorry about the rough editing, had to condense a 30 minute walk down to 6 minutes.

Cave Stream, Castle Hill, Waikuku Beach & Christchurch, New Zealand - 7, 8 & 9 February 2019
The last few days of my New Zealand trip.
A visit to Cave Stream, approx. 550m long, the walk through the underground stream in pitch blackness.
Next, Castle Hill, an imposing array of limestone boulders in the area reminiscent of an old, run-down stone castle.
Then a visit to Waikuku Beach before finally Christchurch.
