Hiking the birthplace of Zeus | Cinematic Greece Travel Vlog | Naxos Day 3
On our last full day on Naxos, we decided to hike Mt. Zas, the highest mountain in the Cyclades at over 1000m, which is also known as the Birthplace of Zeus, the god. To get there, we had to take a bus from the city center, reaching the village of Filoti, from where a 20 minute walk took us to the start of the hike. The way up the mountain took around one hour and went past a nice spring as well as plenty of interesting plants and some lizards. Once we made it to the top, we were rewarded with 360° Panorama views over Naxos and many of the surrounding Cyclades including Paros, Santorini, Mykonos and others. On a clear day you can even see as far as Crete and sometimes even Turkey.
For the hike down, we decided on the more difficult route, which took more than double the time and really challenged us with some climbing and generally was just a lot more strenuous. On the way down, we passed Zeus cave, which was the place that Zeus was raised as a child according to a legend. There was not much there to see since it was pitch-black, but it was pretty cool, which was a nice refreshment in the heat. The next refreshment came at the end of the hike, with the Aria Springs, which provided us with some nice, fresh water and a cool place to chill.
The way back to Filoti took around 30 minutes and there we had some great Pizza and Pasta at this modern fancy restaurant. We walked a bit around Filoti, wich is a really nice, typical Greek Village before booking it back home for a last relaxing evening at our Guest House.

Hiking Mt. Zeus in Naxos | Greece Ep. 5
Last minute trip to Greece.
This was the second day in Naxos. The biggest Greek Island in the Cyclades; even more known to have the highest peak.
This day we conquered Mt. Zas aka Mt. Zeus. Legends have it that this was where Zeus was born. Being infatuated with Greek Mythology, we had to check it out for ourselves.

Cyclades 5: Naxos
A hike up to the scenic top of Mt. Zas on Naxos, the highest spot in the Cyclades, with a visit to the cave where Zeus was born on the way down and a lunch stop in Filoti. Finally, a quick walk through Hora (Naxos Town) the next morning.
eupribeag.com (GR) Naxos Island - Zas/Zeus Mountain (1,003 m)
Mount Zas (1,003-1,004 m above sea level, not 103-104m as I said in the video) is the tallest mountain of Naxos island and also the tallest mountain of the Cyclades. Located 18 km from Naxos and according to mythology, this mountain was the place were god Zeus grew up. In fact, the mountain was named after him (Zas). His son, god Dionysus, also grew up on the slopes on this mountain, in a cave called Cave of Zas, several hundred metres below the summit.

Naxos is a Greek island. It was the centre of archaic Cycladic culture. The island is famous as a source of emery, a rock rich in corundum, which until modern time was one of the best abrasives available.
The largest town and capital of the island is Chora or Naxos City, with 6,533 inhabitants (2001 census). The main villages are Filoti, Apiranthos, Vivlos, Agios Arsenios, Koronos and Glinado.
According to Greek mythology, the young Zeus was raised in a cave on Mt. Zas (Zas meaning Zeus). Homer mentions Dia; literally the sacred island of the Goddess. Karl Kerenyi explains (speaking as if he were an ancient Greek):
This name, Dia, which means 'heavenly' or 'divine', was applied to several small craggy islands in our [Aegean] sea, all of them lying close to larger islands, such as Crete or Naxos. The name Dia was even transferred to the island of Naxos itself, since it was more widely supposed than any other to have been the nuptial isle of Dionysus.
One legend has it that in the Heroic Age before the Trojan War, Theseus abandoned Ariadne on this island after she helped him kill the Minotaur and escape from the Labyrinth. Dionysus (god of wine, festivities, and the primal energy of life) who was the protector of the island, met Ariadne and fell in love with her. But eventually Ariadne, unable to bear her separation from Theseus, either killed herself (according to the Athenians), or ascended to heaven (as the older versions had it). The Naxos portion of the Ariadne myth is also told in the Richard Strauss opera Ariadne auf Naxos.
The giant brothers Otus and Ephialtes figure in at least two Naxos myths: in one, Artemis bought the abandonment of a siege they laid against the gods, by offering to live on Naxos as Otus's lover; in another, the brothers had actually settled Naxos.
