Stuck in a Cave somewhere under Budapest, Hungary #011
Back in 2008, I took a spelunking adventure in a cave system somewhere under Budapest, Hungary. Little did I know at the time, this experience would force me to dive into the darkest corners of my mind... did I panic?... did I freak out and scream?...
Do you want to know what it feels like?
an experience I am glad to have had... but something I would not do again... probably... maybe...

2.5 - 3 hrs long caving tours , the longest cave of Hungary.
Budapest is the capital of caves. It is the only capital in the world which has caves of significant size and length underneath its buildings and streets. More than two hundred caves are known under the Buda side of the town. However these caves also have a special place in the world because of their unusual thermal water based development.
The hydrothermal caves of Budapest were created by the same thermal springs that supply the famous spas of the capital and the entire area is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Travel Video: Caving Tour in Budapest

The Hungarian City Built Over 80 Underwater Caves
As one of Europe’s most famous cities, Budapest has become a tourist hotspot known for its history, its architecture and its love of water. While most people soak above the surface in the city’s famed geothermal baths, below the metropolis lies a secret subterranean world ripe for exploration. The Hungarian capital is home to over 80 geothermal springs. As this naturally heated water flowed deep below the Earth’s surface, it carved out hundreds of caves, making Budapest home to the largest collection of thermal caves in the world. Though divers have charted more than four miles of tunnels since the 1950s, much remains to be explored.
This Great Big Story was made in partnership with the Hungarian Tourism Agency. (

Caving in Budapest Hungary
Located just outside of (and partially beneath) Budapest, in Hungary there is a 20+ km long cave system. Currently the longest in Hungary, the Pál-völgyi-Mátyás-hegyi cave system located in the Duna-Ipoly National Park offers the opportunity to do explore Hungary's depths. This footage is from a guided caving trip which took us into the labyrinth on a ~3 hour adventure. While some of the spaces in the video may look tight, I was only able to pause and film in more open spaces, so as you might imagine...this footage is only a taste of the adventure. In super tight quarters - sometimes so narrow that the only way to pass was with arms outstretched forward or pressed against one's body, helmet turned sideways to fit, and legs pushing furiously to wriggle and worm through the cave's tiny openings.
It's the first time I've ever felt the sensation of true claustrophobia. After nearly getting stuck several times I found my heart racing, breathing growing faster and faster, and hands shaking from adrenaline. To be honest, about 2/3 of the way through I strongly considered asking the guides for an easier way out (and hoping one existed). Luckily, I decided to push on, fingers crossed that my 6'4 200 pound frame wouldn't get me permanently stuck.
It was a fantastic adventure. Just don't try it if you've got shoulder or knee injuries and definitely skip it if you're even the slightest bit claustrophobic.
