Ria Celestun's ecosystem is unique because a combination of freshwater from the subsoil (named Cenotes) and salt water from Gulf of Mexico. It is home to large number of species and it's part of the region called “Reserva de la biosfera Ría Celestún” (Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve).
Over 300 bird species can be found in the Reserve but the best-known one by its international fame is without doubt the Pink Flamingo (phoenicopterus ruber ruber).
Ría Celestún is the most important site for rest and feeding of this beautiful bird (during the winter minimun 18.000 individuals); sharing credits with Ría Lagartos (at north of the peninsula) considered the most important site for nesting
Celestun Adventure
On the western coast of the Yucatan is a small town that is the center of a world renown wildlife and bird sanctuary - and one of Mexico's prettest beaches.
Yucatan Peninsula, Punta Laguna.
Many years ago, when the small Mayan village of Punta Laguna -located between Chichen Itza and Cancun, in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula- was founded, the locals decided to protect the forest around the beautiful lagoon. Years later, the Mexican government agreed to their petitions and declared the OTOCH MA'AX YETEL KOOH reserve on June 05, 2002. Meaning home of the spider monkey and the puma in Mayan language, the reserve is a small heaven for numerous creatures including spider and black howler monkeys, ocellated turkeys, Morelett's crocodiles, ocelots and pumas. Visitors are always welcome and are offered many activities to enjoy nature in an environmentally-friendly way. Local guides could be hired at the entrance and are a real asset to locate monkeys and other wildlife. So, if you are in Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen or anywhere in the Mayan Riviera, consider visiting Punta Laguna and the OMYK reserve for a great natural experience!

Review of Las Coloradas, Pink Lakes YUCATAN, Mexico (20)
It took approximately three hours to reach Las Coloradas from Playa del Carmen on the toll highway and it cost 238 pesos each way. We packed a cooler full of fruit and cold drinks for the drive because there are very few snack options along the way.
When we finally reached the Pink Lakes from Playa del Carmen we were approached by a local on a scooter offering his services as a guide. It cost us about 300 pesos for four people and it was over 2 hours long.
The guides are very knowledgeable about the region and will show you areas that you would not normally have seen. He started the tour off with a bathroom break and a stop at a convenience store for refreshments. He showed us some pristine deserted beaches, local wildlife, explained about the healing properties of the local mud, and finally brought us to a natural fish spa.
Las Colaradas Salt Mines.
The rose colored water is the result of tiny marine micro-organisms (plankton, brine shrimp, and red algae). As the water in the salt ponds evaporates, their concentration increases and the water becomes redder. They are a main food source for Flamingos. The Beta Carotene they contain is the reason for the Flamingos’ color. The natural salt production has been scaled up by the company that mines the salt today, and sadly bathing is no longer allowed. The town of Las Coloradas is a mining and fishing town amid an ecological wonderland.
After Las Coloradas we visited the town of Rio Lagartos and enjoyed lunch at La Torreja. We then negotiated a price of 600 pesos for a water tour of the mangroves. We got a closer look at the Flamingos, jellyfish, and many other species of local birds. A “Cold Coco” wound up what was a spectacular day.
Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve
The 60 kilometers (35 miles) of beach is an important nesting site for Green and Hawksbill turtles (one of the three most important sites in the world) with occasional visits from Loggerhead turtles.
Spanish explorers mistook the inlet for a river and crocs for alligators. The conquistadors named Rio Lagartos when they first sighted enormous reptiles with large tails and huge jaws in what they mistakenly thought was a river. Those silly conquerors.

Wild Mexico - Yucatan Cenote Life - Jump in!
Yucatan Canote Life. The Yucatan Peninsula is mostly a large limestone shelf and fresh water cenotes (wells) are where the Mayans who inhabited the area for thousands of years got their drinking water from. The cenotes were also an important part of religion and ceremonial cenotes were used in human sacrifices, like the Sacred Cenote by Chichen Itza. Cenotes are interconnected by underground rivers and a variety of fish and freshwater shrimp are found in them.

In this episode, we will take you along with us to visit two very special Cenotes: Acancun Azul and Toro.
Cenotes are underwater sinkholes or caves that are filled with water on the Yucatan Peninsula. There are said to be over 6000 cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula, only half of which have been surveyed! Yikes! The cenotes we play and swim in are actually all connected to one another by an underground waterway.
So where do cenotes come from and why are they in Mexico? Studies show that the giant asteroid that hit earth and killed off the dinosaurs may be the cause of cenotes to form over time thanks to the Chicxulub crater located on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Enjoy the ride with us! :)
