Jürgen Wagner enjoys cult status in Spain. He deserves it too. After all, the 45-year-old German is one of the main ones responsible for the rise of the cellar Celler de Capçanes from the drunken Cinderella to one of the most renowned wine companies in Spain.
In 1933, five families founded a cooperative in the Catalan village of Capçanes to manage the common vineyards more efficiently. For almost five decades, the proceeds were then sold as barrel wines to other farms and from 1980 they even stopped every cellar technology and only sold the whole grapes. With economically moderate success.
Therefore, the request of the Jewish community of Barcelona in the early 1990s was just right, who was looking for a producer of kosher wines. For lack of other alternatives, the winery got involved in the experiment and invested in modern technology and its own kosher cellar with its own tanks, barrels and utensils.
With the first year of the Kosher wine Flor de Primavera Peraj Ha’abib from Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cariñena, a sensational success was achieved. Motivated by this, the cooperative continued to invest and then Jürgen Wagner came into play.
Wagner went to Spain after his Geisenheim studies with integrated Erasmus scholarship in 1996 and worked there first for a German wine importer as a buyer. He also visited the cooperative in Capçanes and left such a lasting impression on their boardroom that they offered him an interesting offer a short time later.
“Since then, I live in the village, I’m one of the three winemakers and responsible for worldwide sales and marketing,” says Jürgen Wagner. “I like to build the bridge between the village and the world. I would like to bring out the special, the individuality of our village to the outside, to provide educational work and show regional peculiarities. ”
The conditions are favorable. Finally, first of all, the D.O. Montsant on the edge of the cult region Priorat. Secondly, a good part of the grapes from the currently 180 hectares of vineyards from more than 100 years old Garnacha vines, which thrive in the wild romantic forest around Capçanes up to 500 meters in height on mini-crops and provide an impressive depth of flavor and variety of flavors.

Flor de Primavera 2009 from Celler de Capçanes is dark garnet-red colored. Intense aromas of dark fruits, mediterranean herbs and delicious nuances of game. Defined on the palate and medium-bodied with an explosion of supreme flavors. Tannins and acidity are well equilibrated. Long and everlasting finish. Best from 2012 through 2020 (February 2011). 95 PS

Capçaneses el nombre de un pueblo y su cooperativa, ambos situados en la comarca del Priorato, en el interior de la provincia de Tarragona. The Cabrida “Calissa” is 100% Garnacha and exhibits really fragrant and complex aromas of blackberries, blood orange, mulberries, fine dark chocolate and mocha. Extremely focused and precise. Mineralic. It comes along with an ingenious structure and juiciness. This ain-t a fat boy. It-s more a perfect interpretation of the Calissa (chalk) terroir of Capçanes. Refreshing and harmonious acidity with high quality tannins. Long finish. Full of minerals. Best now through 2030 (December 2013). 96 PS

Celler de Capçanes - La Flor Del Flor de Primavera Old Vines 2013 - Montsant Kosher Samsó tasted 100% blind by the World's Best Sommelier Andreas Larsson.
Ripe Fruit, Dark Berries, Vanilla
Youthful red wine, with a quiet intense colour, medium towards deep here with a youthful blue-purple tinge. It starts out quite discreetly on the nose, but with some aeration it opens up and it offers a wealth of really ripe dark fruit; like wild berries, dark plum and wild berry notes. There is a slight hint of vanilla in the background, but a very gentle touch. Quite full on the palate here, there is good weight, still pretty youthful, a bit unresolved in terms of fruit, with the tannic presence. I talk about a good level of acidity backing up that ripe fruit, really like those fresh, dark berries. Quite a long finish as well, a good structure, just still a bit youthful for my taste. I would like to put this back in the cellar for another one to two years to open up, but it should develop quite nicely.

Celler de Capcanes Vall del Calas DO
Der Celler de Capcanes Vall del Calas ist ein Rotwein aus Spanien, aus der Region Montsant.
Bodega Celler de Capçanes Vinos Kosher (D.O. Monsant)
Capçaneses el nombre de un pueblo y su cooperativa, ambos situados en la comarca del Priorato, en el interior de la provincia de Tarragona. Sus viñedos pertenecieron a la Subzona Falset de la D.O. Tarragona hasta que a finales del 2001 de dicha Subzona nació la nueva D.O. Montsant.
Mientras el vino kosher representa sólo el 5% de la producción total de los vinos embotellados, el otro 95% creó la reputación de la bodega en todo el mundo.
Con la añada 1996 aparece un nuevo estilo de vino y desde entonces Capçanes no ha visto marcha atrás.
Con casi 250 ha de viña, actualmente la producción anual de la bodega asciende a 800.000 botellas y 200.000 litros de venta local de vino a granel/bag in box.
