Visit Cellular Jail of Port Blair in Andamans with PM Narendra Modi
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, visited Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today.
In Port Blair, he laid a wreath at the Martyrs Column, and visited the Cellular Jail. At Cellular Jail, he visited the cells of Veer Savarkar, and other freedom fighters. He hoisted a high mast flag and offered floral tributes at the Statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
At a public event to mark the 75th anniversary of the hoisting of Tricolour on Indian soil by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the Prime Minister released a commemorative postal stamp, coin, and First Day Cover.
He also unveiled a series of development projects related to the energy, connectivity and health sectors.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are not just a symbol of India's natural beauty, but are also like a place of pilgrimage for Indians. He said the Andaman and Nicobar Islands remind us of the collective resolve of our freedom fighters.
He said the Union Government is committed to empowering and developing the islands. He said the development projects unveiled today would further this objective in the field of education, health, connectivity, tourism and employment.
He mentioned his visit to the Cellular Jail, and the point where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had hoisted the tricolour 75 years ago. He said that the Cellular Jail, where thousands of freedom fighters suffered, is no less than a place of worship for him. He said the nation will never forget the sacrifices of the freedom fighters.
Recalling Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the Prime Minister said that on Netaji's call, many youth from the Andamans had dedicated themselves to the freedom of India. He said the flag on the 150 feet high mast, is an attempt to preserve the memory of this day in 1943, when Netaji unfurled the tricolour.
On this occasion, he announced that Ross Island would now be named Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep; Neil Island would be known as Shaheed Dweep; and Havelock Island would be renamed as Swaraj Dweep.
The Prime Minister said that today, Indians are working towards creating a strong India, in line with Netaji's vision.
The Prime Minister said that the Government is working towards strengthening connectivity across the country. He said that remembering and honouring our heroes, helps strengthen our feeling of integration. He said the Union Government is making efforts to highlight every glorious chapter of our history. In this context he mentioned the Panchteerth related to Babasaheb Ambedkar, the National Police Memorial, and the Statue of Unity. He said National Awards have also been announced in the names of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and Sardar Patel.
The Prime Minister said that the New India that is being built with the inspiration of these great leaders, has development at its core.
He said the Government is committed to developing the Islands in accordance with the requirements of the environment. He said special attention will be given to sectors such as tourism, food processing and information technology, as part of industrial development.
The Prime Minister said efforts are being made to make the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as self-sufficient as possible. He spoke of the expansion of Port Blair dockyard, which will enable maintenance of big ships. He called for a report on the condition of rural roads in the Islands within two weeks, and said that once the report has been examined, the Union Government will give whatever assistance is possible.
The Prime Minister said that a new Integrated Terminal Building is coming up at Veer Savarkar International Airport. He said the undersea optical fibre cable from Chennai, once completed, would provide good internet connectivity. He also spoke of development works in areas such as water, power, clean energy, and health.

The prison was used by the British especially to exile political prisoners to the remote archipelago. Cellular Jail is where the British tortured Indian revolutionaries like Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Yogendra Shukla. It was called Kala Pani (Black Water) because very few people came out of this jail alive, or survived the brutal 1300 km boat journey there from mainland India to Port Blair in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands - an Indian Union Territory.

Cellular Jail was an experimental jail for the British in India which involved forced feeding, torture, forced labour, brutal beatings, and other unthinkable atrocities. Many great Indian freedom fighters and revolutionaries suffered here under the British in this jail. Many very hung in the gallows here too. The prison was finally closed when the Japanese invaded India, and the British were then thrown in the jail!
I also explain Savarkar's term Hindutva and how it changed the meaning of the word Hindu from a geographical term meaning people who lived below the Indus river to the religious term we know today as Hinduism.

A Short history of the Andaman Islands
The Andamans are a chain of 184 odd islands in the Andaman sea at approx 1100 Kms to the south of Kolkata. The largest among them, The Andaman Island is 355 Kms long and 60 Kms wide. There was a time when ancient tribes lived here. Some of the natives it is said bore a remarkable resemblance to the aboriginaltribes of Australia. Today some tribes have receded into the deep forest while others have been resettled. Port Blair, it's principal port, is a picturesque and bustling town, full of greenery. It is well connected to the main land by regular passage of ships and scheduled flights from KolKata and Madras. Different communities are living in harmony and use hindi as their language.
Port Blair was named after the East India Companies' Lt. Archibald Blair who occupied the Andamans in 1789 to keep his ships safe and protected in the rains as a safe harbour and as a penal settlement for prisoners. But because of the unhygienic climate and outbreak of diseases and the expenses in maintaining the harbour he had to abandon the Andamans in 1796. Early in the first decade of the 19th century the roots of the East India Company were firmly entrenched in India. The British were subjecting Indians to a lot of abject atrocities, snatching away land from peasants, destroying the livelihood of craftsmen, increasing taxes, usurping the states from the Nawabs and native kings. Ordinary people, soldiers, nawabs and kings were all being terrified and harassed. Generally everywhere there was resentment and revolt. People were determined to do away with the East India Company |

Cellular Jail is located at Port Blair in the Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. It was constructed by British Government during 1896 to 1906.
The jail, once served as a colonial prison and was also known as Kaala Paani or “Black Water” Jail. The jail was called Kaala Paani because the entire prison was surrounded by sea and there was no way a prisoner could escape.
Cellular Jail was especially used by the British to exile political prisoners to the remote archipelago during the struggle for Indian Independence.
Many notable freedom fighters of the great Indian Freedom Movement, such as Batukeshwar Dutt and the renowned Veer Savarkar, and numerous others, were kept as prisoners here.
It was taken over by Japanese troops in 1942 during WWII, and in a surprise turn, saw many British troops as inmates.
Cellular Jail tells the story of infamous cruelty meted out to Indian political prisoners by Britishers- the prisoners were made to labor under the extreme vagaries of nature without food and water.
Cellular Jail used to be one of the biggest jails in Asia. Today this place is a famous national monument.
The main attraction of this place is its museum that exhibits the prison life and hardships faced by great Indian political prisoners.
You can also see the sound and light show, that narates the story about the historical events regarding this place.
Cellular Jail is one of the darkest chapters in Indian history during British colonial rule.

Vice President pays tribute to Veer Savarkar, visits cellular jail in Port Blair
The Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu visited the Cellular Jail, including the solitary confinement cell occupied by Veer Savarkar, and paid his tributes at the martyrs’ column, to the valiant freedom fighters, who were subjected to inhuman treatment during their incarceration at the time of freedom struggle. The Vice President was accompanied by his spouse, Smt Ushamma, his son, son-in-law, daughter, and grand-children. The Vice President said that the Cellular jail was a reminder of how hard-won and precious our freedom is.
