Celtic Shores Trail - all you need to know! [PART 2 of 2]
All you need to know about the 92km Celtic Shores Trail. The 'rails to trails' goes right along the coast of Cape Breton, offering stunning views, lots of places to stop and eat, live music and great people!
We partnered with Bike Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Tourism to film this two-part series. The goal was to capture the Rum Runners Trail and the Celtic Shores Trail to make a 30-second commercial for each. This is the 'BEHIND THE SCENES' from each of these projects. Enjoy!

Cape Breton Island - CABOT TRAIL, Nova Scotia, Canada
Our visit to Cape Breton Island - Cabot Trail on Canada Day. It was an unforgettable experience. Visited Chéticamp, NS.
The island measures 10,311 square kilometres (3,981 sq mi) in area, making it the 77th largest island in the world and Canada's 18th largest island. Cape Breton Island is composed mainly of rocky shores, rolling farmland, glacial valleys, barren headlands, mountains, woods and plateaus. Geological evidence suggests that at least part of the island was originally joined with present-day Scotland and Norway, now separated by millions of years of continental drift.

Lighthouse Trail
Located across the harbour from the Fortress of Louisbourg, the Lighthouse Trail runs along the coastline offering visitors of all skill levels the opportunity for an enjoyable experience. With unsurpassed vistas, this 2 kilometre (1.28 miles) walk leads visitors around a looped trail with interpretive panels explaining the area's significance including its flora and fauna. Beyond this loop is a rugged trail currently being developed by the Coastal Connections Trail Association, an association solely dedicated to this Lighthouse Trail. This rugged section is wet in places and sturdy footwear is recommended. For those who desire to offer some financial support to this Trail Association, you will find a trailhead sign erected each spring and a donation box that enables supporters to contribute to the cost of maintaining the Lighthouse Trail. There are also small wooden donation boxes available at various businesses within the modern community.
To access the trail year-round, locate and travel along Havenside Road, situated in the modern community of Louisbourg and follow the Lighthouse signs. You will note the iconic lighthouse situated on this site. This is the site of the first lighthouse in Canada (1734). Interpretive panels help explain the history of this pivotal spot.
Ripping the Acadian trail in Highlands National Park, Cape Breton.
After 3 days of hiking, swimming, staying in a yurt, chilling in our personal hot-tub, driving the stunning Cabot trail, and hanging out with my Sister and Dog, I decided that I needed to get one last adrenaline rush before we left the Highland National Park for home. Despite that some parks in Canada (Ex: Fundy National) have now allowed biking, and have constructed or designated areas to it, Highlands has yet to do so. It was driving me INSANE to see such epic landscapes and single track opportunities that we were told couldn't be ridden or weren't possible to ride. While certain areas of the park are designed this way to enable regrowth, we had hiked L'Acadien on our first day, and it was evident that this was not one of those areas, it was simply a designation that was lacking.
Having hauled the bikes around for the entire trip and disappointingly not had the chance to use them, I decided I would hit the trail at dusk, so as to not disrupt or run into unsuspecting hikers (we had only run into 1 other hiker in our 4 hour journey when we had made the trek).
40 minutes and a 405 meter continuous climb to the top, and it was time to turn around and let gravity do the work. Man, was it ever worth it! Unridden, the trail had a lot of rough sections that were killer on the hands, but still an absolute joy to ride!
