Eerie and Enchanting Iceland Cemetery
Hólavallagarður is situated in central Reykjavík. It is the largest 19th-century cemetery in Iceland, with its oldest grave dating back to 1838. Many of the tombstones and sculptures are very artful, and some have a historical and cultural significance. Many notable Icelanders are buried here, including Jón Sigurðsson, Iceland's national hero, Bríet Bjarnhéðinsdóttir, often dubbed the first feminist, and Jóhannes Kjarval, Iceland's best-loved painter.
The graveyard also houses victims of the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic, as well as a handsome monument to French sailors lost at sea. The cemetery was fully booked by the early 1930s, but families that bought their plots before then can still bury their dead here.

The amazing graves of Hofskirkja Church, Iceland.
I came to see the small but perfectly formed Hofskirkja Church. I wasn't expecting to see the unique (?) raised graves in the graveyard beside the church.
The Hofskirkja Church is one of only six turf/earth roofed churches that remain in Iceland. It is very close to the ring road and so a popular stopping point for ring road tourists.
The graves appear to have been constructed with a large mound above the normal ground level because the topsoil layer is extremely thin due to the volcanic rock below.

The geography of a cemetery – the early Christian cemeteries of Skagafjör ur, North Iceland
In the last decade early Christian churches and cemeteries in the region of Skagafjör ur, North Iceland, have been the object of extensive archaeological research. A thorough regional survey has suggested the possibility of at least 120 farms with early churches/cemeteries. Of those, 15 have been further examined and four have been extensively excavated. The research indicates that these cemeteries come into being around the date of the official conversion to Christianity in AD999/1000 and that their majority was discontinued just before or after AD1104. A small number ultimately evolved into parish or communal cemeteries and in some instances churches retained their function and boundary walls were rebuilt after the cemeteries were no longer being used for burial. In their outward appearance these cemeteries seem to have been remarkably similar in size and form suggesting that from the outset, they were being managed and structured according to a particular set of laws or customs. Burial customs that have been considered an 11th-12th century development, for instance sex segregation, also seem to have been in place right from the beginning of the 11th century. These cemeteries are adding a new dimension to our understanding of the early ecclesiastical landscape in Iceland and how and when important changes may have occurred. In this paper I will explore the differences and similarities that can be found in the layout and organisation of these cemeteries and how they compare with contemporary funerary data from outside Iceland.

Their shows have added a much needed spark of fun to the LGBT+ scene in Iceland and this Halloween they are going to top themselves with a Halloween glitter blood bath.

Haunted Cemetery Tour...at Night...Spooky!
I grew up on a dead end street, across from this cemetery, to say that I was unhappy about moving there was an understatement. Considering the fact that my dad enjoyed putting little thoughts in my head, like when you're in the basement you are the same depth as the coffins. As I got a little older it became less ominous. I would ride my bike there, sled ride, and even played Ghost in the Graveyard! The caretaker came to know the little blonde girl from across the street.

Went to a cemetery at night and ended up being chased around the city... It was crazy. But in that graveyard, full of dead people, I actually felt alive.
Il cimitero di Marano - Marano's Cemetery
Il cimitero di Marano è uno dei pochi che possiede lapidi ottocentesche e dei primi anni del novecento - This cemetery has headstones still in the early nineteenth century and the twentieth century. Foolishly in other municipalities, the nineteenth-century gravestones were distutte.
