In this video we will show you two cenotes we have visited during our Mexico roadtrip. After visiting Chichen Itza, we went to cenote Samula and X'Keken. Those cenotes are very popular in Mexico and are sinkholes with super Blue clear water in it. It is a magical place!

Cenotes of the Yucatan (Samula & Yokdzonot), Mexico (23)
Our first stop was Cenote Yokdzonot which is one of the Yucatan's best kept secrets. If you picture a crowded scene with many tourists bumping into each other, you have it wrong! Although the water was a little chilly (20 °C) / (68°F), we visited at the height of the high season. We were alone with one other couple. Then they left and another couple joined us. It has beautiful pristine waters. Although the water was a little dark if the sun wasn't shining just right, we did see many fish underwater. Check out the big fat fish that look like Koi! It is located a short drive (20 mins west) of Chichen Itza in the town of Yokzdonot. Life jackets were included in the price of entry which was 70 pesos when we visited.
It is run and maintained by a group of Mayan women who created a cooperative and restored the cenote to its former beauty. In so doing, they also created a livelihood for themselves and their families. They did a great job and we were happy to support them!
Cenote Samula is the sister cenote to Cenote X'quequén near Valladolid. The main difference between the two is that X'quequén has a smaller opening in the ceiling so there is very little natural light. It also boasts more stalactites and stalagmites than Cenote Samula. In our research we decided that Samula would be our focus although you can visit both. They are a short distance away from each other and the cost is 80 pesos each. That does not include a life jacket which costs 20 pesos to rent.
Be warned: there are many vendors and many requests for propinas (tips). Although getting hustled by everyone is a definite turn off, it was worth it. Cenote Samula is a beautiful sight. The turquoise waters and light shining in are what made it so spectacular. Although there were many visitors, we felt like we still had lots of space to enjoy it. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was busy but not crowded. I recommend avoiding visiting on a Sunday because that is the day off for many locals, which translates into more crowds.
What is a cenote?
A cenote is a natural sinkhole that exposes groundwater underneath the surface of the earth. Cenotes can be partially or fully collapsed and are fed by underground rivers and streams. Some Cenotes are tall, vertical shafts, some are enclosed caves with long, dark passageways. We were lucky enough to visit one of each.
Why must I visit one if I visit the Yucatan Peninsula?
Because they are so beautiful and accessible. There are over 6000 different cenotes in the Yucatan Pensinsula in Mexico alone!

El cenote Xkeken fue uno de los primeros sitios visitados por los turistas, fue ademas el primer cenote que fue transmitido por la cadena National Geographic, este complejo de dos cenotes cuenta con el cenote SAMULA y el XKEKEN que es el mas conocido, en ambos cenotes puedes refrescarte con sus aguas, el costo del boleto te da acceso a los dos, también tiene disponible un restaurante que sirve un bufet basado en la cocina tradicional Yucateca, aunque también cuenta con actividades adicionales como renta de cuatrimotos y paseos a caballo
Cenote Samula - Valladolid Yucatán
Cerca de la ciudad de Valladolid a un kilometro en el poblado de Dzitnup se encuentra el cenote Samula. Es una hermosa caverna subterránea que te sorprenderá por su belleza natural y lo amplio del lugar.
Las personas que resguardan este lugar han limpiado y formado una infinidad de caminos que te conducen no solo a la entrada del cenote, a sus puestos de artesanías, si no que te dirigen a disfrutar de la naturaleza en una larga caminata en sus alrededores, que sin duda disfrutaras.
Al acceder al cenote tendrás que bajar por unas escaleras hechas de piedra así que deberás tener cuidado, al ingresar encontraras un primer nivel que te permite ver desde lo más alto la belleza espectacular del lugar, su inmensidad te rodeara y no podrás dejar de admirarla, continuaras al segundo nivel por una escaleras de madera que te permitirán observarla desde otro ángulo y por último bajaras para descubrir una pequeña plataforma en donde desde ahí podrás nadar, esnorqueliar o si lo deseas echarte unos clavados en su parte más profunda. Si no tienes equipo no te preocupes ahí te rentaran lo necesario para disfrutar de un rico y refrescante baño.
Sus aguas cristalinas de color azul turquesa son iluminadas por un orificio en la parte superior de la caverna donde podrás admirar como de el cuelgan las raíces de un árbol que ha sido cortado en la superficie pero que aun sigue vivo gracias a que el agua lo sigue alimentando, admiraras a los peces que en el viven y ver con claridad donde se encuentran sus partes bajas y profundas, sin ningún riesgo aquí podrás refrescarte y disfrutar de este cenote subterráneo.
Su belleza natural y su vista panorámica son imágenes que no podrás borra de tu mente.

We rented bikes in Valladolid, Mexico and went searching for the famous cenotes. We ended up finding four separate cenotes where we were able to swim and jump off some cliffs.
