Centennial Farm Program Recognizes Historic Operations

The Georgia Centennial Farm program, which recognizes working farms that have been in production for at least 100 years, is currently accepting applications. We visit one farm that was honored with recognition in 2013.

The Taft-Nichsolson Center in Centennial Valley, Montana

Centennial Valley is a critical part of the Montana National Heritage Program. It is one of the most significant landscapes in Montana because of its intact ecological systems, expansive wetlands, diverse wildlife and flora and unique concentrations of rare species. The Centennial Mountains tower over the south side of the valley. The foothills of the Gravelly Mountain range are on the north. The Centennials are one of the few ranges of the Rockies that run from east to west. Covered mostly by Douglas fir they provide a critical high elevation corridor for a variety of wildlife including wolves, bear, and wolverines. In addition, Centennial Valley has the largest wetland complex in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The Red Rock River flows through the broad and flat valley floor feeding the Upper and Lower Red Rock Lakes. Streams throughout the wetlands draw fly fisherman to their varied fish populations including the Arctic Grayling and the Westslope Cutthroat Trout.

Bryce Canyon NP :
Bryce Canyon National Park /ˈbraɪs/ is a National Park located in southwestern Utah in the United States. The major feature of the park is Bryce Canyon, which despite its name, is not a canyon, but a collection of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks. The red, orange, and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views for park visitors. Bryce sits at a much higher elevation than nearby Zion National Park. The rim at Bryce varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet (2,400 to 2,700 m).

(Updated) Centennial Trail #89 Highland Creek TH to French Creek Recreation Area

Started my first solo backpacking and thru hike with my best friend on the section of the Centennial Trail in South Dakota that allows dogs. We had a few bumps along the way but otherwise loved every minute out there. Unfortunately, the trip ended early and we left defeated but we will be back.

The Centennial Trail #89 is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is said to be 113 miles but due to rerouting in the trail over the years that mileage is probably closer to 125 miles of hiking without a dog. When hiking with a dog, it is 113 miles. Along the trail, you see many critters and even hike past Mount Rushmore. Access is possible for those without dogs. The trail uses the #89 as its marker to mark the 100th anniversary of statehood (1889-1989) and is meant to show the diversity of South Dakota. It passes through multiple parks and some sections do allow horses and off road vehicles so be aware.

FOR FUTURE ATTEMPTS: backcountry permits for Wind Cave National Park can be obtained for free from the visitor center (leave in car so they know it’s not a stranded car while you are away), Only camping allowing in Custer State Park is in designated sites or French Creek Recreation Area just past the horse camp ($7 per night), Dispersed camping is allowed on all other sections of the trail EXCEPT in Fort Meade (Alkali Creek TH allows camping) and Bear Butte State Park (at the end and should not be a problem), Free backcountry permits are needed in Black Elk Wilderness and are obtained from the trailhead, Wind Cave National Park and Bear Butte Summit do not allow dogs so don’t try

Lincoln Highway Centennial 2013 in Kearney, Nebraska

The week of June 29th to July 5th, Kearney,Nebraska played host to people from all over the world to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the first transcontinental highway in the United States, the Lincoln Highway.
On Sunday June 30th two groups of travelers, one starting in New York City the other starting in San Francisco, met on the Lincoln Highway, passed one another and met again on Railroad Avenue and went north, on the bricks of Central Avenue.
Over 500 cars participated in the parade with over 12,500 people viewing the proceedings. The parade was followed by one of the biggest show and shines I have ever been a part of.
The one thing I regret not including in my video was the Tin Can Tourists who were on hand with their vintage travel trailers.
It was a wonderful time and great to be a part of.
Ronnie and Sarah and everyone involved should be very proud!

U-S First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton has laid a wreath at Atlanta's Centennial Park in memory of the victims of the bombing.

The park re-opened yesterday following the blast which left two people dead and injured more than one hundred.

A day after the public reclaimed Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park, U-S First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton also paid a visit.

The park was reopened Tuesday following the recent pipe bombing that killed one person and injured more than 100.

The visit was conducted under heavy security.

She laid a wreath at Centennial Park in memory of the victims of the bombing and then met Atlanta's Mayor Bill Campbell and his wife, as well as former Mayor Andrew Young who brought the games to Atlanta.

Clinton joined the crowds at the park, before walking around the site of the bombing at the A-T and T Global Village and mingling with visitors.

She said she was happy to be there and see people enjoying themselves.

The visit was designed to reiterate the point that despite the bombing the Olympic Games will go on.
