Mythbusters visit the Livermore Centennial Light Bulb!
This Light Bulb Has Been Shining For A Whopping 116 Years At Fire Station
A California fire department claims a light bulb in their station has burned for 116 years. The assertion comes after a Pittsburgh couple said an alarm clock had been stuck in their wall for 13 years, and a Pennsylvania woman said she had a light bulb that functioned for 37 years. Tom Bramell, a retired deputy fire chief, is in charge of looking after the bulb. It's been burning continuously since 1901, he told Inside Edition. You're not allowed to touch it. We don't even dust it off.
The World’s Longest Burning Light Bulb Has Been On for 113 Years
With most of us having to replace light-bulbs every few months, it’s amazing that the Centennial Light-Bulb at Fire Station No. 6 in Livermore, California, has been burning continuously ever since 1901.
The exact date the centennial bulb was turned on is unknown, although its birthday is usually celebrated on June 18. However, we do know that it has been alight 24 hours a day since then, shining a dim light over the fire engines. Apart from the few power outages it has faced in the last 113 years, the unbreakable light-bulb has only had two breaks – one in 1976, when it was moved from one fire station and installed in another, and one in 2013, when it was off for 9 3.4 hours. When the bulb was moved, almost 40 years ago, people were so cautious not to break it that they severed the cord, instead of unscrewing it, and transferred it with a full police and fire truck escort. The whole business lasted just 22 minutes, after which it was back to business as usual.
The impressive light-bulb is apparently an improved hand-blown incandescent lamp with carbon filament. Debora Katz, a physicist at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., has conducted extensive research on the centennial light-bulb and what makes it so special, using a vintage light bulb from Shelby Electric Co. that is a near replica of the Livermore lamp. “The Livermore light bulb differs from a contemporary incandescent bulb in two ways,” says Katz. “First its filament is about eight times thicker than a contemporary bulb. Second, the filament is a semiconductor, most likely made of carbon. When a conductor gets hotter, its ability to conduct electricity goes down. When the Shelby bulb gets hotter, it becomes a better conductor of electricity.”

Why Light Bulbs Burn Out - Bulb Will Never Burn Out With this Tricks (tricks at the end)
I explain why modern Incandescent light bulbs are burning out. Have you seen that old light bulb that works since 1901? Why doesn't it burn out? I try to find out in this video. Do you still use incandescent light bulbs? Let me know in the comments.
I'll show you how to make light bulbs last longer, and you'll see a diode trick that increases life of a light bulb.

Shedding New Light on Efficient Bulbs -- 06.12.11
First up this week, Correspondent Lee Patrick Sullivan visits the Lightfair International trade show in Philadelphia to find the latest offerings in energy efficient bulbs. He finds a 60-watt equivalent LED bulb that will be the first in the world to sell for less than $20 and the first 100-watt equivalent LED bulb to hit the market in October. He also find out how LED technology is expanding to bring us bulbs that can be dimmed and programmed with a tablet computer or smart phone and wireless sound throughout the home.
Next, our animated correspondent, 'Little Lee Patrick Sullivan,' kicks off our Energy 101 series with an inside look - literally - at light bulb technology. He goes inside an incandescent, a compact fluorescent and an LED bulb to see what makes them work, and their potential drawbacks.
For a more practical look at bulbs, Special Correspondent Daniel Sieberg, our gadget and technology expert, demonstrates several different types of LED, compact fluorescent, halogen and even a hybrid light bulb. He rates them on their cost, brightness, the type of light they produce and how fast they turn on.
One man who isn't thrilled with the government's plan to phase out inefficient light bulbs is Rep Joe Barton (R-TX). In an interview from his congressional office, he tells Anchor Thalia Assuras why he's sponsoring the Better Use of Light Bulbs (BULB) Act and the reservations he has about compact fluorescent bulbs. He also explains when he's likely to finally give in and buy one of the new bulbs.
Finally, when it comes to lifespan, even the most efficient new lights have a long way to go to catch what the Guinness Book of World Records calls the world's most durable bulb. The Centennial Light is not just a museum piece, but an actual working bulb in service at Fire Station Number 6 in Livermore, CA. It was first screwed in in 1901, and although it's been switched off a few times to be moved, it hasn't burned out yet. It has even survived some hazards in the station.

Centennial Light Bulb Has Been Burning Since 1901.
But today we are going to tell you about one such bulb which has registered its name in the Guinness Book due to its continuous burning and people from far and wide come to see this bulb that has been burning for 118 years. So let's know about it.
According to media reports, this bulb was first switched off in 1937 to replace the electric wire and was re-ignited after changing the wire. This unique bulb is known as Centennial. The bulb, installed in the fire station in Livermore, California, was built by the Shelby Electronic Company, which was first lit in 1901. Since then, this bulb has been burning. The name of this bulb is recorded in the Guinness book of world record. This bulb is monitored by CCTV cameras.
People come from far and wide to see this unique bulb. The fire station sometimes gets so crowded that it seems to be a museum. The four-watt light bulb keeps on burning for 24 hours. In 2001, the 100th birthday of this bulb was celebrated with pomp, in which a music party was also organized. The bulb went off on its own in the year 2013, when people thought that the bulb might have fused, but when tested, the wire malfunction came out. After this the wire was replaced again and the bulb started burning again.

5 Amazing Places in the world you haven't heard of.
Well it is time to add to your geographical knowledge, get a cup of coffee and your writing pad as we take you to 5 amazing places you have never heard of.
1. Haida Al-Jail, A village that sits on top of the rock.
Haida Al-Jail is a tiny village in Yemen perched on a boulder 350Ft above the ground.
It sits on Wadi Dawson in Yemen's desert. The environment is about the harshest in the world.
Because Haida Al-Jail is walled on both sides by geological structure, the valley traps heat. It is an extremely hot environment to live in.
The area has no permanent river nor lake, Only channels called Wadis that fill with water at certain times of the year are seen.
Houses are made with mud bricks and wooden floor to separate floors. Houses typically rise up-to 11 floors.
Shepherds graze their flock of goats over the floor of the valley. Haid Al-Jail has a population of 17000 living in 500 houses.
2. The World's longest lasting light bulb.
The Centennial Light is the world's longest-lasting light bulb, burning since 1901.
It is at 4550 East Avenue,Livermore, California, and maintained by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department.
In 2001, the bulb's 100th birthday was celebrated with a community barbecue and live music.
The bulb was originally a 30-watt or 60-watt bulb but now is very dim, emitting about the same light as a 4-watt nightlight.
On the evening of May 20, 2013, the general public through a Webcam witnessed it had apparently burned out.
However the assumption was later discovered to be wrong as the power supply was found to be faulty instead.
The connection was reestablished and the bulb continued to burn at close to its original brightness for many hours before dimming again.
3. A super crystal clear lake.
The Flathead Lake, found in the northwest corner of Montana, is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States and is renowned for the clarity and quality of its water.
The water is so clear that you can literally see a pin dropped into it despite its depth.
It is about 370 feet in depth but its crystal-clear water makes it look shallower than it is in reality.
However, at the lake’s deepest points, it’s unlikely one would be able to see all the way to the bottom.
4. THE INHABITED VOLCANIC ISLAND OF AOGASHIMA, JAPAN.
In the Philippine Sea of Japan is a small village Aogashima. It is a small, tropical volcanic island and about the smallest village in Japan. The island is a giant volcanic crater, which still retains a smaller active volcano.
The last eruption occurred in the 1785, which killed about half of the island dwellers. The survivors were forced to flee the island in search of safety. Aogashima is 3.5 km2 in length with a maximum width of 2.5 kilometer. The island's area is 8.75 kilometer square and, as of 2014, its population was 170.
Aogashima is a rarely visited island. The island is surrounded by very steep rugged cliffs of layered volcanic deposits with no habour to anchor boats.
The main means of transportation is helicopter shuttle which runs once a day for a maximum of 9 passengers. However, this is cancelled alot due to heavy fog.
The Island has the serenity of a tropical paradise.
In its center lies a geothermal sauna. There is a public facility utilizing the geothermal power and gas. People exploit it to cook, using the geothermal steam. The facility also features a sauna, a public bath, and hot showers.
It offers a pretty beautiful place to live...apart from the volcano!
5. Mackinac Island
In this island vehicle are prohibited till date. Mackinac is an island and resort area, covering 3.8 square miles (9.8 kilometer square) located in the state of Michigan USA.
As at 2010, It had about 492 residents and as many as 15,000 tourists visiting the island per day during peak season
The Population density is 50.31/km2
Towards the end of the 19th century, citizens were restricted from using vehicles.

12/21/05 -- Driving over 'pigeon pass' on Hwy 84 from Livermore to Sunol. This was before they changed the route to 4 lanes with shoulders. Back then it was like a little racetrack, with very little margin for error (or chance) at speed. Of course in the morning commutes it completely sucked, the new way is much better for that.. And if a truck stalled at the wrong place (which happened to me while doing a delivery for Astro Business supplies, the one time I was out with my boss Pete) it was basically a roll of the die if you decided to pass.
One night I was coming back the other way and had this Porsche 911 turbo behind me (that looked brand new). No one else was on the road so the 2 of us drove nice and brisk through the curves: fast but not quite dangerous. The dude was so awesome: he didn't ride my ass or try to pass in some stupid place, gave a good amount of space, but kept up (easily of course). When he took a left into the gated community after the hill he sped up beside me before his left at the light and gave a short report of the horn. Friendly; enjoys driving for the sake of driving, with nothing to prove or the slightest hint of insecurity. It was an awesome experience that I savored for weeks after.

SUMMARY
=======
An incandescent light bulb, incandescent lamp or incandescent light globe is an electric light with a wire filament heated to such a high temperature that it glows with visible light (incandescence). The filament is protected from oxidation with a glass or fused quartz bulb that is filled with inert gas or a vacuum. In a halogen lamp, filament evaporation is slowed by a chemical process that redeposits metal vapor onto the filament, thereby extending its life.
The light bulb is supplied with electric current by feed-through terminals or wires embedded in the glass. Most bulbs are used in a socket which provides mechanical support and electrical connections.
Incandescent bulbs are manufactured in a wide range of sizes, light output, and voltage ratings, from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts. They require no external regulating equipment, have low manufacturing costs, and work equally well on either alternating current or direct current. As a result, the incandescent bulb is widely used in household and commercial lighting, for portable lighting such as table lamps, car headlamps, and flashlights, and for decorative and advertising lighting.
Incandescent bulbs are much less efficient than other types of electric lighting; incandescent bulbs convert less than 5% of the energy they use into visible light, with standard light bulbs averaging about 2.2%. The remaining energy is converted into heat. The luminous efficacy of a typical incandescent bulb for 120 V operation is 16 lumens per watt, compared with 60 lm/W for a compact fluorescent bulb or 150 lm/W for some white LED lamps. Some applications of the incandescent bulb (such as heat lamps) deliberately use the heat generated by the filament. Such applications include incubators, brooding boxes for poultry, heat lights for reptile tanks, infrared heating for industrial heating and drying processes, lava lamps, and the Easy-Bake Oven toy. Incandescent bulbs typically have short lifetimes compared with other types of lighting; around 1,000 hours for home light bulbs versus typically 10,000 hours for compact fluorescents and 30,000 hours for lighting LEDs.
Incandescent bulbs have been replaced in many applications by other types of electric light, such as fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL), high-intensity discharge lamps, and light-emitting diode lamps (LED). Some jurisdictions, such as the European Union, China, Canada and United States, are in the process of phasing out the use of incandescent light bulbs while others, including Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina and Brazil, have prohibited them already.
