South Haven, Michigan
South Haven is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. Most of the city is in Van Buren County, although a small portion extends into Allegan County. The population was 4,403 at the 2010 census.
Because of its position on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Black River, South Haven has always been a port city. During settlement, major ship lines stopped there, both passenger and freight. In the early 1900s South Haven became a resort town, sometimes referred to as The Catskills of the Midwest. South Haven is a major regional tourist draw because of its recreational harbor and beaches. It is the western terminus of the Kal-Haven Trail, popular with bicyclists and snowmobilers. Nearby are Van Buren State Park and the Van Buren Trail State Park.

My Painting of Illinois & Michigan Canal - Lock 14 and 15 in LaSalle IL around 1900
I spent over two months working on this painting and i must say it was not easy for me. But i am glad i made the goal and stuck with it. I will have prints available for those who are interested. I was aided by many photos i collected of the area through the local libraries and other historians of the area. Each picture offered new details. My aim was to be as accurrate as i could be. The canal boat IRENE was named after a boat that traversed the canal. The train type is also indicitive of a late 1890s steam loco with wood-sided coaches. The steam boat also was duplicated from a boat in LaSalle at one time. The factories off to the right and so on. Of course i wish i had more photos to work from but i did my best with what i had. It gives people a glimpse of what the area was like around 1900.This painting is acryllic and is 16x20 in size.
NKP 765 The Southern Trips and Ferry Move to Ohio 1982
In 1982, the Southern had a problem on its hands. the Chesapeake and Ohio 2716, which was being leased from the Kentucky Railway Museum in 1982 and 1983 was having mechanical problems and was scheduled for another 22 trips and the Southern had no steam locomotive available. Jim Bisline and Bill Purdy of the Southern Railroad Steam Department got together with the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and solved their problem very nicely. The Southern agreed to lease the 765 to finish out the schedule drawn up for 2716. in this video, we see 765 travel at track speed through massive cuts, tunnels and over bridges over the Southern Railway. At the tail end of the video, we see 765 head on a ferry move back to Bellevue Ohio (which was the last run for long-time Southern Railway engineer Bill Purdy who served the Southern for 46 Years and retired in 1982). 765 resided in the Bellevue Ohio Ex NKP roundhouse for the winter awaiting it's next opportunity to run.
