23. Railway Station Almaty 1
Technology burst into the Kazakh lands and changed the life setting that had been formed during the long ages. The nomads saw two miracles in one day: the railroad and the radio. It was July 1929, when the first train arrived and opened the Turksib rout. The rails had been installed in the wild steppe land. A new age in the history of Kazakhstan has begun, the age of development of railway transport. The railway stations designed for the passenger service started taking special place and forming the city’s infrastructure. In 1976, a group of architects led by S.O. Mhitoryan built the railway station complex Almaty 1, in place of the old one, that was built in the early 1930s. The building at Station Street is characterized by its simplicity. The station services are situated inside the building as per the technological requirements: there are offices on the 1st floor, there are waiting rooms and a restaurant on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The basement is occupied with a storage facility. Platforms are interconnected by the system of underground tunnels. Currently, the local trains, transit and international traffic pass through the Almaty-1 railway station. The Railway Station is located at the beginning of one of the longest avenues of the city named after S.Seifullin. There is a monument of Alibi Zhangildin there. The monument authors are sculptor T.Dosmagambetov and his wife O.Prokopyeva.

The elements of landscaping and landscape architecture play a significant role in the aesthetic perception of the entire ensemble. There are cascades of pools and powerful fountains, flowerbeds along the east and west sides of Akimat building. There are rows of the trees of conifers, hardwoods and vegetation around the building.

The creation of such a large shopping center was an event not only for Almaty, but for the whole Kazakhstan. Therefore, the head of the republic Dinmukhamed Konayev attended the opening ceremony. Trading rooms were not like modern ones.
Sections were separated by glass or partitions. A large open space was stuck by shelves with goods. At the far end of each hall, there were offices.
