National Cultural Centre - Accra, Ghana
This clip was taken at the National Cultural Centre in Accra, Ghana, which equates to a craft market. It is located along 28th February Rd in central Accra, roughly between the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Independence Square. The clips shows my host, Eli, playing musical instruments, and looking at various crafts that are sold there. There is a funny bit where a guy tells him the price of a Kente shirt, and Eli tells him that it's Obroni (white man's) price).....

Destruction of the Center for National Art and Culture in Accra - [GHANA]
On September the 14th 2014 a lot of people who have been living next to the Center for National Art and Culture lost their homes and places to sleep. The workers and artists of the arts center lived behind their shops in communities, meanwhile there developed a slum which crossed a huge area along the street between the 28 February Road and the beach. A lot of people lived there now nearly since 20 years. It was said that some Chinese investors are going to buy the land for building some office headquarters and a hotel facility. Half of the slum and the living area got damaged on Sunday 14th September 2014, all the properties and most of the belongings got run over by some huge bulldozers. To secure the continuing work there have been several police men and security guards, as well reporters and fotographers haven´t been allowed during the demolition process. This video is filmed a day after the happening, on Monday 15th September. There hasn´t been any alternative living areal for all these people provided since, most of them are now strawling around, put up new small barracs next to the beach - just to wait till these get crashed down next week - and are wandering around in the nearby suburbs. As well there is no actually taking care of any hygienic factors, this should be definitly reasonable in times of cholera outspread in Accra city and the ebola epidemic not far away from the frontier. The planing for this project was very poor and destroyed the lifes of a lot of people who are now in frustration, homelessness and depression without giving them support. This is as well a small example for a lot of these happenings occassionally - The poor have to move away.

Largest mosque in west Africa almost complete
(6 Feb 2017) LEAD IN:
The biggest mosque in west Africa is under construction in Ghana.
The Turkish style building is being built alongside a cultural centre and school for Muslim students in Accra.
STORY-LINE:
Even from a distance you can't miss the vast scale of the new Turkish style mosque on the Accra Furgan complex.
It's currently under construction in the Kanda neighbourhood, which is one of the three main Muslim communities of Accra.
It will be known as the National Mosque of Ghana and become a major gathering point for Muslims throughout the country once it's completed.
It's part of a complex being created by the Human Development Association International (HUDAI) which will also house the National Chief Iman's villa, a library, a cultural centre and a school for Muslim students complete with dormitories.
As Awal Lawal, Assistant General Coordinator of HUDAI explains, despite being built in Ghana, the influence and materials for the mosque are being provided by another Middle Eastern country:
All the building materials are coming from Turkey, they were exported from Turkey. And the architect, the engineers, the constructors they are all coming from Turkey because Ghana, we are not up to this, such level, he says.
The Turkish Religious Affairs Ministry is helping HUDAI directly along with a number of other sponsors and the overall cost of the project is expected to reach 12 million US dollars.
After five years of construction the mosque is expected expected to open during the holy month of Ramadan at the end of May 2017. It will be the biggest mosque in west Africa.
We are anticipating by the end of May, as we enter Ramadan, the holy month of Muslims, the mosque, only the mosque will commission for prayers. Now by the end of July the entire complex will be commissioned, says Lawal.
