Central arcade in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
SEE MY HISTORY GROUP ON FACEBOOK :
This is the Central Arcade in Newcastle upon Tyne, a shopping arcade originally built more than 100 years ago, one of the forerunners of today's commercial centres. We can see similar shopping centres in other cities from the same time or earlier and here I mention similar structures in Milan and Turin in Italy.
My channel is one of the most prolific from Poland. With almost one film per day, one may be forgiven for thinking I do nothing else but I do have a day job as well. I have produced around 1,600 original films, most in English but also in Polish, French, Italian, Spanish and the occasional hint of German and Hebrew. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

The Central Arcade
This building used to be an art gallery, commercial exchange and a newsroom. Now, there are a number of shops and especially music instruments shop located in The Central Arcade. The artistic wall and sculpture are so mesmerizing, make this place memorable and impressive.
About this place from :
This triple-domed building was built in 1837 for Richard Grainger. It was originally a commercial exchange and newsroom and later an art gallery. It was rebuilt in 1906 after a fire, at which time the present Central Arcade was formed to cut through from Grey St to Market St with a link to Grainger St.
Under its glass barrel-vaulted roof, the glorious tile work is a joy to behold. Today the Arcade houses a number of retail outlets and also the Newcastle Tourist Information Centre.
A great place to pick up souvenirs.

The Handyside Arcade, Percy St, Newcastle upon Tyne, how it once was and how it looks today.
George Handyside funded the building of a 90 shop development in Percy St, which opened in 1906, sadly George never got to see this, as he had died 2 years earlier in 1904. The building was eventually demolished in 1987 and the site became Eldon Gardens, part of the Eldon Square Shopping Centre. George would have had no idea that his building would become a part of Geordie folk-lore. During it's time it housed WWW 1 soldiers, a Dental Hospital and in 1962 the Club A'gogo opened it's doors. Shortly after this 5 local lads got together and formed a group called The Animals, they made the Club A'gogo their home. And as they say, the rest is history.

Busker Central Arcade, Newcastle.0001.mpg
While I was up in Newcastle the other day, I came across a very talented Italian busker called Francesco playing an instrument that I had never come across before.
He told me that it was called a Hang Drum, (officially The Hang).
It is made by a Swiss firm called PANart. It is a scientifically researched modern instrument taking inspiration from many world wide, metal struck music genres, including Indonesian Gamelan. (Wikipedia has a revealing article on it)
The sound of this instrument, combined with the cavernous acoustics of the structurally amazing Central Arcade in Newcastle, produced a luscious sound that held my attention for an uncharacteristically long time. (Short attention span & all that).
It wasn't Rock n' Roll but I like it'.
Nice one Francesco!

Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle upon Tyne, commonly known as Newcastle, is a city in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear in North East England. It is situated on the north western bank of the River Tyne's estuary and centred 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East region and lies at the urban core of the Tyneside, the seventh most populous conurbation in the United Kingdom and the most populous in the North East. Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group[6] and, with Gateshead, the Eurocities network of European cities. Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400, when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of the Tyne and Wear metropolitan county in 1974.
The city developed in the location of the Roman settlement called Pons Aelius. It was named for the castle built in 1080, by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century, and it later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the river, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres. Newcastle's economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism and cultural centres, from which the city contributes £13bn towards the United Kingdom's GVA.
Among its main icons are Newcastle Brown Ale, a leading brand of beer; Newcastle United F.C., a Premier League football team; and the Tyne Bridge. It has hosted the world's most popular half marathon, the Great North Run, since it began in 1981.
The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area is Geordie.
