San Jose Costa Rica Gold Museum
Hey Everyone, okay, really it's the Museos del Banco Central de Costa Rica, but in Travel Books and out on the streets, it's known as the Gold Museum. It's actually a couple different places all wrapped up in one building. There's an art gallery for temporary art exhibits, another exhibit about the history of the monetary system in Costa Rica and on the bottom floor, gold, gold and more GOLD- over 20,000 troy ounces of GOLD in more than 2,000 objects. There's also a gift shop and a branch of the Costa Rican Tourist Institute's info center... but the point is.... is it ALL worth the $9.00 entrance fee? Check out this video and find out what we think...

What One Dollar Equals in Costa Rica
We are often asked how is the exchange rate determined in Costa Rica, or more specifically, what one dollar equals in Costa Rica. The money in Costa is the colon and the plural is colones. Interesting history lesson here. If you guessed the colones was named after Christopher Columbus, you would be correct!
Evelyn Gallardo, owner of the Discovery Beach House ( in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, and her Concierge, Sabrina, discuss the colorful Costa Rican colones, and how to determine the equivalent dollars to colones. They also cover the best places to exchange your dollars for colones in Costa Rica and whether the US dollars are also accepted in Costa Rica.
We hope this helps you in planning your next Costa Rica vacation. We definitely hope to see you in Manuel Antonio at the Discovery Beach House.

Banking in Costa Rica - Banking information in Costa Rica - Costa Rica Banking
Banking in Costa Rica - Banking information in Costa Rica - Costa Rica Banking
Feel free to know more about us, please see our website.:
Banking in Costa Rica fall into two classes: National (State) Banks and Private Banks.
The differences of banking information in Costa Rica are extremely significant. National Banks involve some security as deposits are insured, somewhat like the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in the united states. How well this would work in case a national bank went under remains to be seen.
Abroad banking in Costa Rica Private and public banks
Offshore banking in Costa Rica isn't always the kind connected with tax havens and illicit monetary systems. Actually, the Costa Rican authorities and international agencies cooperate in reporting drug associated trades that are possible and preventing money laundering. That said, the Costa Rica banking should also follow the local laws regarding banking privacy. Below are information about the state owned banks, private banks and other system of banking in Costa Rica
Offshore bank accounts: Review of Costa Rica's Banks
Costa Rica's financial sector includes the Central Bank, 3 state-owned commercial banks, 19 private commercial banks (including one jointly owned state bank), 1 workers' bank, 1 state-owned mortgage bank and 4 common house building businesses, 15 private finance companies and 27 savings and loans cooperatives. Additionally, there are trusts run by state and private commercial banks along with the state insurance company or 30 investment and retirement funds.
Offshore banking Costa Rica: How safe is your money? Regulation
The Central Bank of Costa Rica makes banking policy in Costa Rica. The SUGEF (the General Supervisory Agency of Finance) enforces compliance with Central Bank policies. 11 times a bank's equity may not be exceeded by total assets, and the legal lending limit is 20 percent of total capital per customer.
The Costa Rican authorities backs the state owned banks, although there's no deposit insurance on private banks. The Central Bank's examiners office in 1995 closed Banco Anglo Costarricense after incurring US$ 200 million in losses due to bad loans and doubtful investments in Venezuelan bonds that afterwards vanished. Criminal proceedings were successful against members of the board and management, a number of whom are serving prison sentences of the bank. Not one depositor lost money in this scandal.
How safe are the private banks?
Private commercial banks are relatively new to Costa Rica, since just the state-owned banks could offer checking account and passbook savings accounts to the public until the banking law was altered in 1995. This law also allowed private banks access to crisis loan facilities and the Central Bank discount window.
Offshore banking from Costa Rica
Many Costa Rican banks have subsidiary or affiliated banks registered offshore. These offshore things will not be permitted to capture deposits though they cater to Costa Rican customers or give cash within Costa Rica.
Recent reforms stipulate that any SUGEF- financial group or controlled holding company owning 25 percent or more of the equity of an entity that is international must range from the offshore assets on its balance sheet. However, SUGEF doesn't have individual accounts of the offshore things or regulatory authority within the operations.
Foreign banking Costa Rica: The State Banks
Banco Nacional de Costa Rica, Banco de Costa Rica, BanCredito (once Banco Credito Agricola de Cartago). As it's a private commercial bank is chartered in the Bahamas and jointly owned by the three state commercial banks BICSA, is a strange animal. It has a representative office in Costa Rica and branches in Panama and Miami.
Banco de Costa Rica is the most prosperous and maybe best -run state commercial bank. Although Banco de Costa Rica has national coverage additionally Banco Nacional is the largest state commercial bank in number and assets of location. Banco Credito Agricola de Cartage (now called BanCredito) is the smallest state bank. Lately Banco Bacioanl and Banco de Costa Rica announced a strategy whereby clients of either bank may use the resources of the other.

Pre Columbian Gold Museum Museos del Banco Central de Costa
Pre Columbian Gold Museum Museos del Banco Central de Costa
San Jose has several attractions for tourists. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, locally known as Museo del Oro Precolombino, is one of the best ones. It is a small art museum in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica, which is known for its intriguing exhibition of Pre-Columbian artifacts. The The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum1museum is built underground beneath the Plaza de lu cultura. It has an extraordinary and authentic collection of over 1600 individual pieces of artworks and monuments of pre-Columbian era that dates from 500 AD to 1500 Ad. The exhibition’s most popular object is the Media Escudo, Costa Rica’s very first coin which was minted years ago in 1825. It is also a home to the well-known El Guerrero, a large, human sized gold figure clad in gold ornaments. Furthermore, there are unique figurines of animals (particularly frogs and birds), amulets, jewelry pieces, erotic statues and even paintings by famous Costa Rican artist Lola Fernandez. The imitation of Pre-Columbian grave that holds 88 gold relics (discovered in 1950s in southeastern part of the country over a banana plantation) is quite an attraction to the visitors. There is a short video in English that describes the mementos and their functions precisely in order to enable the visitors to appreciate and understand the collection. One can learn a lot about the craftsmanship, skills, and aftermath of Pre-Columbian period by observing the well-laid out extensive exhibits.According to the history of Costa Rica, gold was considered to represent power and authority as well as attributed to dexterity during the Pre-Columbian times. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is maintained by Banco Central de Costa Rica, the central bank of the country. The Museo Numismatico, also known as National Coin Museum, is located on the ground floor of the building and displays coins, bank notes, tokens, and other unofficial items from olden times. The Casa de Moneda is on the same floor and it features the history of minting through illustrations. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum no doubt has an exquisite collection of gold objects of several primitive civilizations of Latin America. However besides gold, there are hundreds of sculptures, metates and artworks made of clay, jade, and stone. The museum is not just about valuable antiques encased in glass; rather the ancient creations symbolize the national history, the culture, and old traditions of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica FAQ #7: Banking
Greetings from Costa Rica! This is not legal advice - just a general overview of banking, based on my decade here. We work with Banco Nacional and there are many options for foreigners looking to retire here. In this quick chat I cover ideas about bank accounts for foreigners, the paperwork you'll need (personería jurídica, estado financiero, flujo de caja and acta constitutiva for your corporation). Finally I talk about online banking and the financial profile system that Costa Rican banks will use to oversee movements in and out of your account. Enjoy!
