Russia: Ukrainian detainee tells of alleged plan to bomb Simferopol airport
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested a Ukrainian man in Simferopol, Friday, on suspicion of organising planned terrorist attacks on the territory of Crimea. The suspect was identified as Ridvan Suleymanov, a resident of the Zaporozhye region in southern Ukraine, who was allegedly recruited by the Chief Directorate of Intelligence of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence in October 2015.

He texted me an '+' which meant that I should wait until they contacted me with a conference call with the police.
I walked around, waited and then they phoned me. During the conference call I heard something that shocked me: 'I'm Amir Karimov. Today other brothers and I are turning from a small to a big jihad. Promptly at 12 o'clock we will blow up the central airport of the city of Simferopol and also the central bus stations of Simferopol, Yalta and Sevastopol and the Kerch Strait ferry line.'
After that I went directly to the airport to monitor the reaction of law enforcement agencies. I took five photos and sent them to him through the 'Line' app. After that I was arrested by the law enforcement agency.

Koktebel (Ukrainian: Коктебéль, Russian: Коктебéль, Crimean Tatar: Köktöbel), formerly known as Planerskoye, is an urban-type settlement and one of the most popular resort townlets in South-Eastern Crimea. Koktebel is situated on the shore of the Black Sea about halfway between Feodosia and Sudak and is subordinated to the Feodosia Municipality. Population: 2,807 (2014 Census).
It is best known for its literary associations. The Russian poet Maximilian Voloshin made it his residence, where he entertained many distinguished guests, including Marina Tsvetayeva, Osip Mandelshtam, and Andrey Bely (who died there). They all wrote remarkable poems in Koktebel. Another prominent literary resident of Koktebel was Ilya Ehrenburg who lived there circa 1919 while escaping from anti-Semitic riots in Kiev.
The name Köktöbel is of Turkic origin: in Crimean Tatar it means “Land of the blue hills” (from kök, “sky blue”, and töbe, “hill” or “mountain”, composed with the collective suffix -el). Its Soviet name of Planerskoye comes from the Russian planer, or glider: the hills above the shoreline were the site of many early experiments in manned heavier-than-air flight by Russian pioneer aviators. The local airfield is still known as Planerskoye.
The 2003 film of the same name by Boris Khlebnikov and Aleksei Popogrebsky follows the journey of a father and son as they try to reach Koktebel from Moscow.
Koktebel was known as a vacation spot for writers in the Soviet Union. It is also famous for its brandy, its hang-gliding and its naturist beach, largest in the former USSR.
There is a mixture of public beaches and private beaches with a paved walkway all along the bay. This walkway is lined with small restaurants, cafes, kiosks, and small market areas selling arts and crafts, dried fish, or slices of home-baked cake. In the evening, the beachfront comes alive with many small discos offering music, beer and shashlik. The cuisine is predominantly Tatar but Russian and Ukrainian food is also on offer. There are boat excursions, horse-riding and trips to a nearby monastery or to the cognac factory. Accommodation is either in a small hotel or in one of the hundreds of guesthouses run by local residents. It seems as though the whole population has turned into innkeepers in the summer.
Koktebel is nowadays also well known for its jazz festival that usually takes place in the middle of September. It lures the attention of jazz-lovers from the whole ex-USSR. Cast from the festival in past years included De-Phazz, Nino Katamadze, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham and many other famous jazz and world music performers. But the festival's 2014 edition will be held in Zatoka and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi (both in Odessa Oblast).

Ukraine: Violent clashes in Kharkiv leave dozens injured
Dozens of people have been hurt in clashes in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Violence reportedly broke out when pro-Russia activists stormed the regional government's headquarters.
Thousands of people had gathered outside the building during a protest against Ukraine's new leaders who ousted President Viktor Yanukovych a week ago.

Ukraine: International Women's Day brings out chivalric spirit in Simferopol
Residents of Simferopol celebrated International Women's Day on Saturday at the Dybenko Garden Square with the men hosting the annual blacksmith arts festival, called Iron March, in honour of the city's women
Guests at the festival created iron presents for women with their own hands, and some even tried on knight's armor to participate in a training standoff to win the hearts of their ladies. Flower markets located in the underground cross at Sovetskaya Square were also open for business as men kept the square busy buying flowers. Spring season flowers like tulips, Narcissus and hyacinth were among the most popular choices.
Meanwhile, the building of the Supreme Council of Crimea remained under the guard of members of local self-defence units. Members of the units congratulated the women who cooked food for them in a nearby tent.

Armed men seize regional gov't building in Ukraine's Crimea peninsula

A group of armed men have reportedly seized control of the main government building on Ukraine's Crimea peninsula.
The incident comes less a day after Moscow ordered surprise military exercises near the Ukraine-Russia border.
Our Paul Yi reports. Eyewitnesses say some 30 fully armed men ran inside Crimea's government headquarters early Thursday, kicking out police officers and then raising a Russian flag prominently on the building's rooftop.
After taking over the building in the regional capital Simferopol, another large group of people arrived by bus and entered the site reportedly carrying heavy weapons.
It's still unclear who the group is as they have yet to make any public demands, only posting a sign reading Crimea is Russia.
But witnesses say they spoke Russian and appeared to be military separatists.
Those were 100 percent soldiers, because police officers or anybody else wouldn't just... they are paratroopers, Russian paratroopers, or whatever they call themselves.
Ukrainian security forces have been put on high alert and the local government has said it is negotiating with the armed men who remain barricaded inside.
No one has reportedly been hurt and all civilians were released from the building.
Tensions in Crimea have been sharply rising following the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovych last week and recent orders from Moscow to launch military exercises near the Ukrainian border.
It comes as Kiev is in the midst of a shaky transition.
The interim leadership announced Wednesday its line-up for a new cabinet ... and parliamentary deputies are voting for a new national unity government to lead the country until snap elections in May.
The Maidan Council -- Kiev's main protest camp -- has proposed Arseny Yatseniuk,... a former economy minister,... as prime minister.
He said the country was on the brink of disaster and that the government will have to take extremely unpopular steps to revive an economy battered by months of political unrest.

Several thousand Crimean Tatars gathered on Saturday (28/03) in Simferopol to protest against their lack of basic and legal rights. They say they are without voting privileges and not represented on any influential political level. The Tatar minority on the Crimean peninsula, which is part of Ukraine, has basically been without rights throughout its history. During Stalin's reign of terror he deported tens of thousands of them from their Crimean homeland to Central Asia. Since the fall of the Soviet Union they have been returning to their roots but have been far from welcomed. Their ancestral homes have not been returned to them nor have they received Ukrainian passports. Clashes between the Tatars and the local Crimean population have been on the increase in the last few years and the protests are getting more vehement. Tatars are demanding full Ukrainian citizenship so they can vote in upcoming elections.
