Beaches in Torquay
Torbay beaches often retain their Quality Coast Awards for being clean and safe. They are generally Maidencombe, Oddicombe, Meadfoot, Preston, Broadsands, Ansteys Cove, Torre Abbey Sands, Paignton, Goodrington and Breakwater.
The Environment Agency has been taking water samples across Torbay and the beaches have been identified as meeting stringent water quality standards for both the awards set by the Keep Britain Tidy group. They had to pass strict criteria on a number of aspects of beach management including safety, access, facilities on offer, good litter management and bathing water quality.
In addition, 11 of the 15 designated bathing waters in Torbay are mentioned as recommended beaches in the Marine Conservation Society’s Good Beach Guide

The Gleneagles Hotel, Torquay 2015
This video films the famous Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay, which was the inspiration for the cult comedy sitcom Fawlty Towers. It was whilst the Monty Python cast stayed here that John Cleese came up with the idea of Basil Fawlty after encountering the rude Gleneagles Hotel Manager Donald Sinclair. At the time of this video being filmed, the hotel was closed down, but all signage including a sign for Basil's Bar were in situ. Since this video was filmed, in early 2016 I can sadly confirm that the Gleneagles Hotel has now been demolished.
Filmed on my Sony Cybershot DSC-H55 digital camera on 29th August 2015.

Rotten Row, London (1926)
This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process.
The rather haphazard journey from Land's End to John O'Groats creates a series of moving picture postcards. Look out for shots containing the component colours - red and blue-green - such as when a little girl in a red coat and hat walks among peacocks in the grounds of a castle, and three girls with red curly hair pose by the sea at Torquay.
The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time. A long-distance journey by car was a relatively new concept, with none of the amenities en route now taken for granted. The visit to a petrol station shows smoking on the forecourt: no health and safety issues back then! The travelogue ends with a series of recognisable London landmarks. Much remains the same - one major exception being the volume of traffic on the roads. (Jan Faull)

The Organ at Southampton Guildhall by Francis Burgess
Southampton to-day is one of the most romantic places in the British Empire. It is an old town, happily set at the junction of two lovely rivers, the Itchen and the Test, whose fame is great among fishermen. Across the water stands the beginning of the New Forest, where the naturalist can find enough to interest him for a lifetime. In Southampton itself the antiquary may examine the historic walls and the ancient church of St. Michael, the famous Tudor House and the lovely buildings and chapel of the House of God.
But superimposed upon these natural and historic glories, a great new town has been created. Acres of land which, in the writer's recollection, were covered only by shallow tide-water have now been reclaimed and made part of the great docks. Here, day by day, the tall ships of the mercantile marine bring their travellers from every part of the world.
Trains from all over England bring their quotas of passengers journeying to the ends of the earth. Only a man who is insensitive to the call of the sea can fail to be thrilled by the direction board at the Central Station, which tells him what great ships are in port and in which berth each may be found.
The municipal government of Southampton is in wise hands. In the centre of the new town, a great collection of civic buildings has been assembled. A noble Guildhall is the latest addition to the tale of civic progress, and a glorious organ has been installed therein to gladden the heart of the citizen. The new Guildhall is built to the design of Mr. E. Berry Webber, A.R.I.B.A.: it is 143ft. long (excluding the stage), 71ft. wide and 48ft. high.
To a height or 15ft., the walls are panelled in English walnut. Above this, the walls rise in a simple masonry treatment, with absorbent acoustic material introduced at suitable points,-to the underside of a decorated ambulatory filled with grilles of old silver. This feature gives scale and distinction to the appearance or the hall, and it does something more. The ornamental grilles on the two long sides of the Guildhall mask a range of top lighting windows, and also a good deal of necessary electrical equipment. Over the stage, and at a height of about forty feet above the floor, the series of eleven grilles masks the four specially designed and constructed chambers which contain the organ, none of the pipe-work being visible to the audience.
The organ, though invisible, is by no means inaudible. Chamber A, on the extreme right, contains the great and choir departments and the greater part of the pedal organ. Chamber B, next to it, holds the swell organ and a part of the pedal. Chamber C has the solo department and its pedal. And Chamber D, which is smaller than the others, contains the pedal bourdon and its extensions, and has no shutters. The three main chambers enjoy the spaciousness of a good-sized room, and access is obtained to each by means of a full-sized door. The lay-out is masterly, and the quality of the workmanship in the soundboards is shown by the fact that, on the occasion of an early visit to the job before the pipes were planted, no sign of escaping wind was audible in any chamber.
In more remote rooms behind the series of chambers will be found the relays and the Discus centrifugal fans supplied by Messrs. Watkins & Watson, together with the electric motors and the generator. Those with a mechanical bent will appreciate the information that more than half-a-ton of insulated copper wire is used in the connecting cables, and that the relay and console mechanism contains over 17,000 contacts of sterling silver. There are nearly 4000 speaking pipes in the instrument, and they vary in length from 32ft. by 18in. diameter (with a weight of 3 ½ cwts.) to ¾ in. by 3 ¾ in. diameter.
Organ enthusiasts fall into three categories: those who have mouths to talk, those who have pens to write, and those who have ears to hear. To those in the last category, this Southampton organ will assuredly close the extension controversy so far as it relates to the manner in which Mr. Compton has applied that much discussed principle to the needs of the modern player. Let us study the tonal design of this instrument, working backwards from the main console stop-registers, which have luminous heads as at Downside Abbey and at Broadcasting House. The scheme is printed on the opposite page. *
