Central Library Computer Handover (St. Lucia)
The operations of computer services department of the Central Library received a boost as a result of a gift facilitated by local firm.

St. Lucia Public Libraries
One of the initiatives that we hope to accomplish is to bring more reading materials to St. Lucia's 18 library branches. The St. Lucia Public Library System hasn't received funding to buy educational resources for over a decade. This has severely limited the ability of the library system to build a collection that is relevant and beneficial for library patrons.
We have formed a recent partnership with the International Book Bank which will supply the library system with books. Most importantly, the library staff here will have the opportunity to look through catalogs and select books that are most relevant for users and the needs of each individual branch. The books are provided free of charge; however, we are required to assist some with the shipping and handling charges. I have started a GoFundMe page for the library in the hopes of raising money to help with these fees.

St Lucia Pigeon Island beach and Castries Town Center with Oceania Riveira
Castries, Saint Lucia
The ship was docked at La Place Carenage, right in the middle of the town center.
Taxi to Pigeon Island Beach, located 14 km (9 miles) north of La Place Carenage. This beach is very quiet, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing beach day. Snorkeling is possible but there aren’t many colorful fish to see. Renting sunbeds is possible.
Taxi back to Castries.
Stroll in the town center of Castries. Visit to the Central Market for souvenirs, spices and tropical fruits and vegetables. The town itself wasn’t a highlight with the cracked pavements and dusty buildings but there are a few builidings worth a visit. The cathedral of the Immaculate Conceptionis one of the oldest on the island and considered the largest in the Caribbean. The Central Library is a beautiful historic building and a landmark in the political history of the city.

The Central Library will need some attention from the government soon despite grandiose plans for the redevelopment of the city of Castries. Workers there say the books inside the facility are being water damaged because of leaks in the roof. Cecile Actille visited the library and filed this report.
Carifesta 2019 - Silent Scars
Saint Lucian cast performs at CARIFESTA XIV.
Hayden Forde’s play “Silent Scars” was staged during Carifesta in San Fernando.
Abby, the main character, has a secret which only her metaphoric flower seems to understand. She pours pain, hurt, disappointments into the flower, which appears to be her only source of comfort. Abby is yearning for her mother's attention, but with Linda’s nomadic and promiscuous lifestyle, she is too busy to listen to Abby.
Abby's hopeful and persistent childhood friend, Thomas, tries to get her to open up about her pain and anger. Driven by her distrust in men, Abby builds a wall which Thomas tries to break with his playfulness and charm. He's tries to win her over and is hopeful she will eventually submit to him, so that he could help her overcome her difficulties.
The play reaches its climax and the drama unfolds when the source of her pain looms uncomfortably close to home. Her mother, Linda, with her own life-style issues, finally seems to pay attention. Thomas' frustration reaches a boiling point. All conditions are ripe for an explosive ending.
Hayden Forde has been involved with the arts from the 1970’s and is an accomplished playwright who has been writing for over 25 years.
Born in 1960 in the community of La Clery, he attended the Anglican Infant and Primary Schools before attending the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School. There, he cultivated a love for the arts, first as an actor and later on, writing scripts and plays.
He is a graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica which he attended from 1998-2000. He has won several awards during the existence of the M&C Fine Arts Awards and the National Arts Festival. Hayden considers himself a “grass-roots” artist whose plays present raw, true-to-life characters and situations. His dramas focus mainly on social issues and highlight the plight of the disadvantaged and marginalized with frequent heart-wrenching scenes and dialogue balanced with comedy.
Forde has written over a dozen plays including ‘De yard’, ‘Anchor’, ‘Dey playing us too close’, ‘Cold vibes’. His published collection (2018) consists of ‘Silent scars’, ‘Twisters’, and ‘Rottenway.’ All the plays have been performed in Saint Lucia.
Hayden founded his first drama group, “Stone Productions” in 1992. This later metamorphosed into “Gemstones Theatre Productions” which is now the longest-lived drama group in Saint Lucia. In spite of many difficulties facing theatre enthusiasts, Forde and Gemstones have persisted. Their most recent production before Carifesta was a staging of the late Gandolph St. Clair’s “Guess who came to visit the doctor” in August 2018.
The playwright and director’s intention was to develop and express the creative talents of artists; to provide an opportunity for discourse with communities around Saint Lucia; to highlight social and cultural issues which affect citizens and to which audiences can relate. From the beginning, his group staged plays around the island.
In 2017, this committed playwright fulfilled his dream to bring his drama to audiences outside Saint Lucia. His play ‘Twisters’ was showcased at Carifesta 2017 held in Barbados. The play was shaped to become a musical/theatrical production called ‘TwistersFolklypso’ with a fusion of calypso, folk music and theatre. Well-known and popular calypsonians like Herb Black and Black Pearl were part of the cast.
Hayden’s vision is for all artistes to work together towards the development of arts in Saint Lucia and to bring about a change in the perception of Theatre and the Arts by Saint Lucians.
While many Saint Lucian poets and prose writers publish their work regularly, not many playwrights have done so. The Walcott brothers, Stanley French and Gandolph St. Clair were among the few whose plays have appeared in book form. The plays of Kendel Hippolyte have appeared in anthologies with other Caribbean playwrights.
John Robert Lee, Saint Lucian poet, reviewer and former theatre director, commented that “Publication of these powerful plays will help to keep before us necessary reminders of the complexity of the lives of those we so easily profile, dismiss and take for granted. In the wider Caribbean and beyond, actors and directors will find much here that is perceptive, and that speaks with relevance to, the post-modern struggles for meaning of the average city dweller.”
Silent Scars and other plays carries a foreword by Kendel Hippolyte, veteran poet, dramatist and director. It was published and launched at the Castries Central Library November 28th, 2018. It is available at the 758 St. Lucia Books Café Littéraire, Gablewoods Mall.
fully booked.
The Castries Central Library capped its Library week of activities with a literary night, during which it honored a well known cultural activist.

GALNDOLPH ST CLAIR clip 2
Description Local cultural activist and author Gandolph St. Clair wants local historians and educators to help ignite a fresh interest in the island’s history among its youth.
Mr. St. Clair was speaking ahead of his lecture titled Sign Posts: The journey to Independence.
It was delivered at the Central Library today.
The lecture traced developments leading up to the island’s independence from Britain.
[ GANDOLPH ST. CLAIR ]
According to Mr. St. Clair so much of the island’s history though documented, so much of it remains unknown, and undervalued, especially to the younger generation.
He says it is clear that the youth of today are less engaged in the island’s history than yesterday's youth.
