Rostov-on-Don - the southern capital of Russia
Rostov-on-Don was built by decree of Empress Elizabeth (the daughter of Peter the Great), as an important strategic settlement in southern Russia. Now Rostov-on-Don is the largest city in the south of Russia, where more than 2 million people live.
Rostov-on-Don is a large administrative, cultural, scientific, educational, industrial center and the most important transportation hub in southern Russia.
The city has preserved many beautiful buildings. We walked along the central streets of the city, the embankment of the Don River and talked to the locals.

Abandoned Russian village where my father was born
The village of Egoshino is a typical Russian village in the center of the European part of Russia. Before the revolution, it was part of the Vyatka province. Until 1987, Vyatka Province was the second most populated province of the Russian Empire, second only to the Kiev Province.
After the revolution, the village of Egoshino became part of the newly formed region - the Mari ASSR (now the Republic of Mari El).
Life in the village of Egoshino, as in most of the surrounding villages, began to fade away even in Soviet times. Young people went to study in the cities and never returned. Among these young people was my father.
The collapse of the Soviet Union was fatal for all the surrounding villages. Collective farms began to die, and people began to move to larger settlements.
For the first time, my father showed me and my brother the place where he was born in 1998. At that time, people lived only in four houses, the rest of the houses were abandoned. At the end of the 90s, we were children and did not fully realize what had happened. My brother and I did not understand how my father and grandfather felt when they walked through the overgrown streets of the village between abandoned houses.
The second time we came to the village in 2009. At that time only one house remained inhabited, and the surrounding fields were already actively overgrown with forest.
In 2018, there was no one left in the village. All the houses are abandoned, and a forest appeared on the agricultural lands. We went into some houses and captured the latest testimonies of people's lives. Nature slowly but surely returns everything back.
During our trips, we also regularly visited the village of Bakhtino and holy water springs, as well as the village of Maskanur (rural administrative center). Now the process of depopulation has covered larger settlements. Now it is the turn of the rural administrative centers to return to nature everything that was taken from her earlier.

Rostov-on-Don in Russia, one of the oldest in the country and a tourist center of the Golden Ring
Rostov-on-Don in Russia, one of the oldest in the country and a tourist center of the Golde
Rostov (Russian: Ростов; IPA: [rɐˈstof]; Old Norse: Rostofa) is a town in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, one of the oldest in the country and a tourist center of the Golden Ring. It is located on the shores of Lake Nero, 202 kilometers (126 mi) northeast of Moscow. Population: 31,792 (2010 Census);[4] 34,141 (2002 Census);[7] 35,707 (1989 Census).[8]
While the official name of the town is Rostov, it is popularly known to Russians as Rostov Veliky (Russian: Ростов Великий, Rostov the Great) to distinguish it from much larger city of Rostov-on-Don, and the name of the town railway station is Rostov Yaroslavsky, due to its position in Yaroslavl Oblast.
he central square of Rostov is occupied by the Assumption Cathedral. It is unknown when the present building was erected, the mid-16th century being the most likely date. Lower parts of the cathedral walls are dated to the 12th century. The ponderous bell-tower was constructed mostly in the 17th century. Its bells are among the largest and most famous in Russia - each has its own name. The largest bell, cast in 1688, weighs 32,000 kilograms (71,000 lb). It is named Sysoy to honor the city's founding father.
An area situated between the cathedral square and the lake was chosen by Iona Sysoevich as a place for his fairy-tale residence. All the construction works were carried out between 1667 and 1694. Major buildings include the ornate Savior Church-na-Senyakh (1675), the sombre Church of St. Gregory (1670), and the barbican churches of St. John the Apostle (1683) and of the Resurrection of Christ (1670). The residence, often erroneously called kremlin, also includes eleven ornate tower bells, numerous palaces, several small belfries, and the diminutive baroque Church of Our Lady of Smolensk (1693). All the churches are elaborately painted and decorated.
The cathedral and four tall kremlin churches with their silver blind domes were imitated throughout the city. This is particularly evident in the Savior-on-the-Market church and the cathedral church of the Nativity convent, both dating from the 17th century and situated near the kremlin walls. The oldest church within the town center was consecrated to St. Isidore the Blessed in 1565. They[who?] say that Ivan the Terrible had the architect executed, because his church was so much smaller than its predecessor.
The kremlin is flanked by two monasteries, both facing the Lake Nero. To the right from the kremlin stands the Abraham monastery, founded in the 11th century and one of the oldest in Russia. Its cathedral, commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 1553 to commemorate the conquest of Kazan, inspired numerous churches in the region, particularly in Yaroslavl.
Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery, situated to the left from the Kremlin on the town's outskirts, has been venerated as the shrine of St. Dmitry of Rostov. Most of the monastery structures were built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the fine neoclassical style. There are also two 17th-century churches: the Conception of St. Anna, and the Transfiguration of Our Savior. Unlike most other churches in the town, the monastery belongs to the Russian Orthodoxy and houses a theological seminary.
Sochi, Russia. History, Tourism, Economy, Sports
Sochi is Russia’s only subtropical resort city located in Krasnodar krai, on the northeast coast of the Black Sea, 1,620 km south of Moscow. It has a total area of 3,526 square kilometers.
HISTORY:
Sochi has a long history that dates back to Ancient Greek and Roman times. The first people appeared in the vicinity of present Sochi about 400-350 thousand years ago. The most famous monument of the Stone Age is Akhshtyr cave inhabited about 250 thousand years ago. In the first half of the 6th century BC, a large group of Scythian tribes settled on the coast of the Black Sea.
Greek colonization of the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus began with the appearance of city-states in the 6th-5th centuries BC, and lasted until the 1st century BC. The period from the 1st century till the 5th century AD was the time of Roman colonization of the Black Sea coast.
In the 6th-15th centuries, the region was under control of various Christian kingdoms. As a result of the Russian-Turkish war of 1828-1829, the Russian Empire received the territory of present Sochi.
LOCATION
Sochi is located approximately midway between the North Pole and the equator, at the latitude of Nice, Toronto and Vladivostok. The length of the city on the Black Sea coastline is about 145 km. The urban area is located mainly along the coast, sometimes expanding into the mountain valleys.
TRANSPORT
Sochi is a major transportation hub of southern Russia. Sochi international airport offers flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Turkey, Armenia, Belarus and a number of other cities. Public transport is mainly represented by taxis and a small number of buses. An alternative way is to hire or rent a car.
TOURISM:
Tourism and related services are the backbone of the local economy. The Big Sochi has a lot of hotels, motels, restaurants, cafes, bars, entertainment centers, water parks, marinas, piers etc. The most important factors that attract tourists in Sochi are its warm, subtropical climate, the Black Sea, mineral sources, and the mountains. its many beaches make the city popular in summer, while skiing in the nearby mountain makes it an ideal place for winter vacations.
ENTERTAINMENT
Sochi is a Black Sea resort with a lively boardwalk and glorious sunsets. In summer, coastline nightclubs pump out booming baselines from dusk till dawn.
POPULATION:
Population approaching 350,000. There are more than 30 Orthodox churches and chapels in the city. The Byzantine Empire brought Christianity to the Sochi region in the Middle Ages. Sochi is a large predominantly Christian city, though there are thought to be around 20,000 Muslims (5% of inhabitants) living there now. A mosque was built in 2008 by United Arab Emirates in the central area of Bytkha, in addition to the old mosque being around 40 km north of the city center.
SPORTS:
In 2014, Sochi became the first city with a subtropical climate which held the Winter Olympics. Sochi tennis schools have trained such athletes as Maria Sharapova. Sochi is one of the host towns for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Ростов-на-Дону до войны... (Rostov-on-Don to war)...
Photos of old Rostov made prewar photographers. Here we can see the bell tower and the central market, and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and much more. The streets are wide and uncrowded. On the roads trams carriages drawn by horses. Life is calm and measured.

A range of factors were considered, such as quality of city housing and its premises, street greening, availability of recreation areas and leisure activities etc. Each factor had sub-items, for example, infrastructure diversity, city safety level etc that were given points, too, which then added up to overall city score. To obtain data, the experts used satellite imagery and navigation and social media information.
The first most comfortable cities to live in having a population of over one million included Nizhny Novgorod in central Russia, Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia, Yekaterinburg in Ural Region .
