A World Apart: Montana's Hutterites
From promotional materials for the 1973 film: A documentary film produced by MTN's Bill Whitsitt provides a glimpse into the life and thoughts of one of Montana's least known religious communities. The film - the first, and possibly last, of a kind - portrays the lifestyle of the Miller Hutterite Colony near Choteau, including views of the members at work and play, in the fields and in the classroom, with modern machines and with traditional texts of prayer. Nancy Watts: MHS Board of Trustees Heritage Keeper Award Recipient—Eastern Montana
No one has done more to make the history of Lewistown and its environs accessible to the public than Nancy Watts. Watts, who was born in Pennsylvania, has worked for the Lewistown Public Library for twenty-three years, primarily as a reference librarian, but more recently as Community Preservation Officer and Local Historian. In her “spare time” she volunteers at the Central Montana Historical Museum.
Nancy Watts became fascinated with local history after being asked to help proofread a local history book called the “History of Lewistown.” She then began collecting and indexing local history material for the library, building an extraordinarily strong collection on Montana, and especially on the history of the Lewistown region. She is creative in disseminating the information she has gathered—helping with the publication and displays. She even shares historic photos of Lewistown on the library’s Facebook page.
A font of knowledge for library patrons, Watts has worked equally hard to make information about central Montana accessible to people outside of the area. She was an early advocate for the Montana Memory Project, a statewide digitization project sponsored by the Montana State Library and the Montana Historical Society.
An early contributor to the Project, Watts led a team of local historians and archivists to create two significant online collections: the Central Montana Historical Photographs Collection (3,483 items) and the Central Montana Historical Documents Collection (435 items). Because of Watts, anyone with computer access, anywhere in the world, can view and download historic pictures and other information about Lewistown. In addition, Watts scanned and catalogued every community and county history book in the Central Montana area, making them available for genealogists worldwide.
Nancy Watts is a bridge-builder. She works closely with the Central Montana Genealogical Society, the Central Montana Historical Society, and other organizations to get their material online. She has also shared her technological know-how with smaller communities throughout Fergus County to help them tell their stories.
Nancy Watts’ contributions have been widely recognized, and she has received awards from the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers and the Lewistown Resources Commission for her work. We are delighted to add our voice to the chorus of those celebrating her tremendous contributions, preserving and sharing the history of her adopted home.

Taming Big Sky Country: The History of Montana Transportation from Trails to Interstates
The state’s major routes evolved from ancient Native American trails into four-lane expressways in a little over a century. That story is one of difficult, groundbreaking, and sometimes poor engineering decisions, as well as a desire to make a journey faster, safer, and more comfortable. It all started in 1860, when John Mullan hacked a wagon road over the formidable Rocky Mountains to Fort Benton. It continued until the last section of interstate highway opened to traffic in 1988. Montana Department of Transportation historian Jon Axline charts a road trip through the colorful and inspiring history of trails, roads, and superhighways in Big Sky Country. How the Trump administration is shaping the future of America's public lands
The Trump administration is responsible for the largest reduction of federally protected land in U.S. history, according to a recent study by the journal Science. And in the wide expanses of the American West, Trump's encouragement of industry and development has conservation advocates concerned for the future of public lands intended for varied use. Jeffrey Brown reports from central Montana.
Correction: This story mentions the Bureau of Land Management’s plans to move its headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Grand Junction, Colorado. While most of the staff will, in fact, be relocated from Washington, many will be scattered in Western states, not just Grand Junction.
