Future Infrastructures: The Over and Under of I-81
March 22, 2018 in Slocum Hall. Presented by City Scripts and City Symposia.
The symposium is the second in a series, made possible by a unique partnership between two internationally prominent colleges at Syracuse University, the School of Architecture and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. The partners believe their collaboration will insure that policy and design are at the forefront when confronting the challenges facing cities in the United States and around the world.
The goal of the symposium is to create an ongoing, interdisciplinary and applied dialogue that reaches beyond the university and, ultimately, influences both policy and design.
Future Infrastructures: The Over and Under of I-81 will focus on the choices for renovating or re-routing the I-81 elevated highway in Syracuse, New York from both urban design and public policy perspectives. This challenge facing the city engages a range of interdisciplinary issues and is emblematic of similar infrastructural questions confronting cities across world.

SUMMARY
=======
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States. New York was one of the original Thirteen Colonies that formed the United States. With an estimated 19.85 million residents in 2017, it is the fourth most populous state. To distinguish the state from the city in the state with the same name, it is sometimes called New York State.
The state's most populous city, New York City, makes up over 40% of the state's population. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York metropolitan area, and nearly 40% lives on Long Island. The state and city were both named for the 17th century Duke of York, the future King James II of England. With an estimated population of 8.55 million in 2015, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York metropolitan area is one of the most populous in the world. New York City is a global city, home to the United Nations Headquarters and has been described as the cultural, financial and media capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
New York, the 27th largest U.S. state in land area, has a diverse geography. The state is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the northwest. The southern part of the state is in the Atlantic Coastal Plain and includes Long Island and several smaller associated islands, as well as New York City and the lower Hudson River Valley. The large Upstate New York region comprises several ranges of the wider Appalachian Mountains, and the Adirondack Mountains in the Northeastern lobe of the state. Two major river valleys – the north-south Hudson River Valley and the east-west Mohawk River Valley – bisect these more mountainous regions. Western New York is considered part of the Great Lakes Region and borders Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and Niagara Falls. The central part of the state is dominated by the Finger Lakes, a popular vacation and tourist destination.
New York had been inhabited by tribes of Algonquian and Iroquoian-speaking Native Americans for several hundred years by the time the earliest Europeans came to New York. French colonists and Jesuit missionaries arrived southward from Montreal for trade and proselytizing. In 1609, the region was visited by Henry Hudson sailing for the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch built Fort Nassau in 1614 at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers, where the present-day capital of Albany later developed. The Dutch soon also settled New Amsterdam and parts of the Hudson Valley, establishing the multicultural colony of New Netherland, a center of trade and immigration. England seized the colony from the Dutch in 1664. During the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), a group of colonists of the Province of New York attempted to take control of the British colony and eventually succeeded in establishing independence. In the 19th century, New York's development of access to the interior beginning with the Erie Canal, gave it incomparable advantages over other regions of the U.S. east-coast and built its political and cultural ascendancy. Many landmarks in New York are well known, including four of the world's ten most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park, Niagara Falls (shared with Ontario), and Grand Central Terminal. New York is home to the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of the United States and its ideals of freedom, democracy, and opportunity. In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entr ...

????Hudson Valley Farm Goes Solar!!! ????
Working with Karl Family Farms to go solar was a once in a life time opportunity for us at NYSSF. It's not often that you meet another family business that is similar in so many ways. The system that we installed will offset 80% of their usage at the farm & is taking full advantage of net metering with Central Hudson Gas & Electric. We also applied to the USDA for a grant that helps with some of the cost of going solar. The system we installed is comprised of SunPower 360 watt solar panels & SolarEdge inverters. For more information on how you can do the same at your farm, home or business give us a call our visit us at our website listed below.

Recent Employment Growth in Cities, Suburbs, and Rural Communities
Economists have long studied persistent differences in labor market conditions across locations: urban versus rural, center-city versus suburbs, and large versus small cities. Have these labor market patterns changed during the past two decades? If so, what factors drove these changes: industrial shifts, differences in transportation infrastructure and lifestyle amenities, growing production externalities, or something else? Which level of geographic granularity is most relevant for policymakers who evaluate employment patterns: the state, city, or neighborhood level? And how do recent differences in employment growth relate to the regional rise in income inequality over time?

Rethinking Regional Responses to Economic Shocks
Economists have traditionally downplayed the importance of regional economic shocks. The lasting consequences of these shocks were thought to be small, as economists have assumed that residents living in adversely affected areas are free to migrate to places with better economic prospects. Recently, however, this sanguine view of regional shocks has been called into question. Why do some recent shocks—particularly those induced by trade—appear to have long-lasting effects on some communities? And should we expect future economic shocks to result in similar outcomes?

New Northwest Commons Mall Signs Lease with Dick's Sporting Goods / October 9, 2014
It will still be about a year before a new outdoor mall, the Northwest Commons, opens in Grand Island. But the developers have already sold their first piece of property.
Saint Louis based company The Staenberg Group, along with Grand Island local developer Ray O'Connor signed Dick's Sporting Goods to be their anchor tenant for the outdoor mall. A signing that is expected to lead to a successful future.
A property like this can only truly be successful with an anchor tenant, said Tim Lowe, the Vice President of Leasing and Development of The Staenberg Group. Anchor tenants are what drive sales but they also drive your ability to bring other regional type tenants to a market and for us to bring the type of tenants that we were looking for here in Grand Island we needed a strong anchor and Dick's Sporting Goods is, by far, the premier sporting goods retailer here in the United States.
Now the developers can more easily fill the other openings at their location.
We have one anchor location, which is Dick's Sporting Goods, at 45,000 sq. feet, we will have two other junior anchor locations, probably in the 20,000-15,000 sq. ft. range, we'll do some 5,000-8,000 sq. ft. apparel tenants and other larger tenants, plus we'll have the ability to bring in a number of the 2,000-3,000 sq. ft. service users and small retailers, said Lowe.
But it won't be strictly retail stores the group and O'Connor will be bringing in.
Lowe said, If you truly look at Grand Island and you look at where the void is I think the void is in sit down restaurants. And we'd love to bring in some sit down restaurants and maybe a couple of quick serve restaurants really to expand the food offering that you have here today.'
Now that Dick's has signed on the dotted line, we have a better idea of when this new, renovated mall will be open to the public.
Because of the fact that we're going to phase construction you see probably a 6-12 phasing period where we would open Dick's Sporting Good in October 2015, said Lowe. Some tenants might open with them and then others tenants would open in the Spring of 2016.
And as The Staenberg Group and O'Connor have worked for a year to get Dick's Sporting Goods on board, they've been preparing for this announcement with other businesses.
Lowe said, We've been talking to tenants about this property for the last 6 months. We've got a great list of tenants who we know want to be here, and now that we have Dick's signed up and it's a real deal, it's time to go out and make deals with some of the other tenants and bring them in.
The Staenberg Group and O'Connor said they cannot reveal what stores they're in talks with until leases are signed. But we will update you as those businesses have confirmed they're joining the Northwest Commons.

Cayuga County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2010 census, the population was 80,026.[1] Its county seat is Auburn.[2] The county was named for one of the tribes of Indians in the Iroquois Confederation.
Cayuga County comprises the Auburn, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Syracuse-Auburn, NY Combined Statistical Area.
When counties were established in the Province of New York in 1683, the present Cayuga County was part of Albany County. This was an enormous county, including the northern part of the present state of New York and all of the present state of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. This county was reduced in size on July 3, 1766 by the creation of Cumberland County, and further on March 16, 1770, by the creation of Gloucester County, both containing territory now in Vermont.
