Fukuoka Travel Tips: 6 Things to Know Before You Go to Fukuoka
Things YOU need to know before you travel to Fukuoka Japan. Fukuoka is nearly equidistant to Tokyo, Shanghai and Seoul, it sits on the northern tip of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. Fukuoka has a laid-back atmosphere, the friendly people, the relaxed pace of a city large enough, with about 1.4 million people, to have its own attractions but not so large as to be overwhelming. Compared with navigating Tokyo’s busy subway system or hurrying to visit one last shrine in Kyoto before closing time, taking in the sights in Fukuoka actually feels like a vacation
Today's Fukuoka is the product of the fusion of two cities in the year 1889, when the port city of Hakata and the former castle town of Fukuoka were united into one city called Fukuoka. Hakata remains the name of one of Fukuoka's central districts and of the main railway station.
5 - Getting to Fukuoka
Plane - Airport is really close to the city -- 5 minutes on the Subway from the domestic terminal. But 15 minutes by Bus from the International Terminal.
Shinkansen -- 2.5 hours from Osaka
Drive
3- Transportation in Fukuoka
Fukuoka sells unlimited day passes for tourists, making sightseeing easier and affordable. The subway is easy to use, with two main station transfer hubs (for JR trains) and a route to the Fukuoka International Airport. You can buy a single fare (600 yen) or get an unlimited day pass. The station master booth near the turnstile can answer any questions you have.
Fukuoka Tourist Day Passes grants access to each/all the public transportation: 800 yen (adults) affords a pass on Nishitetsu Bus, Showa Bus, JR Train and the Subway, while 1,300 yen gets you an extra usage of the Nishitetsu Train (* takes you out to the Dazaifu Temple Area). I chose the 800 yen pass and was very pleased. Show your passes at events and attractions and you may get a special discount.
4 - Food:
For ramen, most people say Fukuoka is the best,” he said. Two of Japan’s most famous ramen chains, Ichiran and Ippudo, hail from the city. Ramen Stadium on the 5th floor of Canal City. But the one can’t-miss dining experience in Fukuoka is yatai. Yatai are tiny street food carts that are constructed (and deconstructed) nightly. Plastic curtains typically enclose a bare-bones kitchen and minuscule counter around which no more than a dozen or so diners can cram. Many yatai serve basic fare like grilled things-on-sticks or ramen; some supplement counter seating with folding tables and chairs.
Today, there are about 150 operating yatai in Fukuoka, with most clustered along main roads, parks and the riverfront. Because of a law that bans the opening of new yatai, those numbers are dwindling
5 - Shopping:
Canal City is a major shopping complex at 2.5 million square feet, including about 250 shops, restaurants, cafes, cinemas, game center, theater, etc. It even has a canal flowing inside (which explains its name), and a large fountain that has a water show every 30 minutes.
Because the mall is so large, it may take you a whole day to discover everything. If you come to Canal City before May 18th, you can also enjoy the 3D projection mapping show with the popular anime “One Piece” theme, which is quite epic you won’t want to miss it.
By the train station lots of shopping too!!
6- Shrines:
Dazaifu Tenmangu and Kushida Shrine.
Dazaifu Tenmangu is located in Dazaifu city, and it is one of the main shrines in Japan dedicated to Tenjin- the “God” of literature and scholarship. The shrine is very large and includes several structures, so it would take you around 1 hour to visit all the places.
On the contrary, Kushida shrine is located right in the center of Hakata, and since it is a village shrine, it is much smaller than Dazaifu, and this spot will only take you 20 minutes to visit. As the oldest shrine in Fukuoka city, it attracts lots of foreign tourists so you can get the information sheet and even the omikuji (paper fortunes) in English.

Japan Trip: Enjoy spring and flowers in Uminonakamichi National seaside park, Fukuoka08 Moopon
Uminonakamichi Seaside Park (海の中道海浜公園, Uminonakamichi Kaihin Kōen), is a sprawling, family oriented public park located on a narrow peninsula across the bay from central Fukuoka. The park is made up of several different areas including flower gardens, playgrounds, an amusement park with ferris wheel, sports fields, a water park, a zoo and large open spaces and lawns perfect for picnicking.
Uminonakamichi Seaside Park measures nearly four kilometers from end to end, and many visitors will find it too expansive to cover on foot. To make the park more easily explorable, there is a network of cycling trails, and bicycles can be rented at the entrance gates for 400 yen per three hours or 700 yen per day. Alternatively, there is a train (on tires) that circles the park and costs 300 yen per ride or 500 yen for a 1-day pass.
Uminonakamichi Seaside Park is also a popular place for flower viewing, with millions of flowers planted around the different areas of the park including narcissus, tulips, nemophila, roses, hydrangeas, sunflowers and cosmos among others. The flowers are in bloom at different times of the year, but the general blooming season starts in mid March and lasts through early autumn.

Trip to Japan- Kora Shrine
At a height of 312 meters (1,024 feet), Mt. Kora stands on the westernmost edge of the Mino Mountain Range. On this mountain you will find Kora Taisha Shrine, a former National Shrine and a major shrine in the Chikugo region.
The construction of Kora Shrine is said to have taken place in 400 AD; it was ordained one of the highest ranking shrines in 897 AD and had an elevated rank within the Engishiki (a book of laws and regulations) as a shrine dedicated to gods worshipped at critical times.
Kora Taisha is a historical shrine in that its power of influence during the middle ages came to compete with that of central government officials sent to oversee the province. It is also known for being the place that received the prayers of Prince Kanenaga Shinno, who established a residence at the base of the mountain in the Nanboku-cho Period (1336 – 1392).
The main sanctuary, offering hall and worship hall that we see today were built by the third Kurume feudal lord Arima Yoritoshi, and each is has been deemed an Important Cultural Asset by the government.
In addition, Kora Shrine is the home to “The Tale of the Heike Ink Volume” (Government Designated Important Cultural Asset), “The Origins of Kora Taisha Shrine Colored Silk Hanging Scrolls” (Municipal Designated Cultural Asset), and other such treasures. A forest of a moso bamboo species (a designated National Natural Treasure), Kogoishi Rock (Government Designated Important Cultural Asset and Historical Site), and other precious sites are also preserved on Mt. Kora.
Ichiran Ramen, Dorayaki & Ohari park | Slurp In Japan | Ep. 3 | Yael & Roy's Mania | Vlogging Japan
It's my last day in Hakata ( Fukuoka ) before heading to Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki. I decided for that day that ill walk around the city and relaxed a bit.
during my walk, I decided to try for the first time the famous Ichiran Ramen.
Ichiran Ramen (蘭 Ichiran) is a Japanese ramen restaurant chain specializing in Tonkotsu ramen. The chain restaurant began in Fukuoka were Tonkatsu Ramen is most known and popular. Eating in Ichiran Ramen is a very interesting experience. You sit in capsule style booth, where you can't see anyone that sits next to you. After sitting down, you customize Your ramen flavors to your liking using a form that you give to the waiter beforehand. There is in front of you a little curtain that opens up when you get your Ramen but you never see the waiters face. I have to say, the Reman was really good! The broth, noddles, and Chashu were delicious. I recommend you to try this place for the experience and also for the Ramen.
I ate here :
After a good Ramen, I had to get something sweet to eat, so I got myself a strawberry-Matcha-Anko Dorayaki from a place called Ito-King store. It was just the perfect dessert that I was looking for.
This place is specialized in making Dorayaki with a fresh strawberry and different types of filling. Not only Ito-King has very Tasty Dorayaki,
they even grow their own strawberries!
Served cold, Ito-King Dorayaki is the perfect dessert on a hot day after a good heavy Ramen!
Here is the address to Ito-king in Hakata:
It was time to relax. Looking at the map, I decided to check out the area around the beautiful Ohari park:
Ohori Park (大濠公園, Ōhori-kōen) is a pleasant city park in central Fukuoka with a large pond at its center. There is a walking path around the circumference of the pond that is just a little over two kilometers long and is popular for jogging, walking pets and leisurely strolls by the water.

It is a very beautiful place and a great spot for relaxing midday :
Don't forget to look at all the sites around the park if you are visiting this area.
The last things I did before ending the day, was to go to the
One of the most famous tourist attraction in Fukuoka :
the famous Yatai-Stands.
A Yatai (屋台) is a small, mobile food stall in Japan typically selling ramen or other food. The name literally means shop stand.
Here is what Japan-guide sais about it :
Fukuoka's open-air food stands (屋台, Yatai) are possibly the city's best-known symbol. Yatai can generally seat about seven or eight people and provide an atmospheric outdoor environment to enjoy various foods that are generally simple and filling. There are over 150 Yatai scattered across Fukuoka.

As for me, I was very disappointed. The service was not really good, the Ramen was not hot enough and the flavor was just OK. Also, you have to order something to drink ( they don't have water ) and there is a service fee of 300 Yen ( around 3$), making it a costly place to eat Ramen.
If you want to experience the feel of a Yatai, you should definitely go, but as for Ramen, service, and Price, ill-advised to just skip it and eat at someplace better.
here is the location of the Yatai stands area in Hakata:
