Jean Sibelius Novellette op. 102 - MERVI MYLLYOJA & KALEVI KIVINIEMI
©KALEVI KIVINIEMI
Finnish violin artist Mervi Myllyoja and concert organist Kalevi Kiviniemi performs Novellette by Jean Sibelius in Pori Central Church, Finland. Video and audiowork by Janne Siniketo, Sinifonia.
Novellette by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) dates from 1922, from a series of original works for violin and piano (1915-1929) that are said to have been composed partly as a solution to the composer’s economic difficulties during and after the war (1914-18). The character of this brilliant piece is strongly impressionistic, having less details and more free flow than perhaps any of his popular encore pieces for violin.
The modal variation of the A minor sixth chord creates almost a jazz-like tonal ambience, leaving lots of room for imagination and framing beautifully the more compact major theme in the middle and in the end of the piece. The sleekness of design is emphasized by the exceptional church organ accompaniment provided in this recording - the rich orchestral sounds from The Central Pori Church’s organ are letting the solo melodies bath in the halo of the gently melting arpeggios.
For anyone familiar with Sibelius’s widely popular masterpieces such as Valse Triste
(1903-04) or Finlandia (1899), this particular piece should be one of the most effortlessly easy to listen chamber work. Its feeling of innocence, short duration and smooth transitions are caressing the listener’s ear towards a crystal clear ending.
Lacking totally the gloominess which is present in many other of Sibelius’s lyrical works for violin, the modern and astonishingly well written Novellette should increase its popularity as an encore – well fit to celebrate The Finnish national composer’s 150th Anniversary!
