Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) is the leading institution of the system of higher education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and one of the top university of Central Asia. It is also a city of sport with modern competition and training facilities. Almaty hosts the highest number of various sporting events and campaigns to promote a healthy lifestyle – over 250 events annually. 176.The Central Archive of Documents and Audio Records of the Republic of Kazakhstan
It keeps old photos, films and audio recordings, the documented memories of life. Central archive was founded in 1943. It is located on 39, Abay Avenue. Here we can find the evidence of the history of the country: unique photos and kilometers of film strips. The most valuable of archives documents are feature writings made by the operators of the studios “East cinema”, “Mezhrabprom”. The titles of those writings are “The Kazakh lifestyle” (1927), “Almaty is the capital of Kazakhstan” (1929), “Turksyb” (1930). There are films about the participants of the Great Patriotic War, labor- heroes, scientists, the figures of culture: “Turar Ryskulov”, “Aliya”, “Dina”, “Amangeldy Imanov”, “Manshuk”, “The High Sky of Talgar”, “Mazhit Begalin”, “Saken Seifullin” are in the archive.
Today the archive collections hold about 30 thousand documentaries, popular science films, and stories; 250 thousand photo negatives and 15 thousand audio recordings on records, CDs, and cassettes.
In accordance with the program of archive development all the film documents were re-recorded on modern data mediums. The archive encourages other organizations to document their activities and to pass to the archive.
Religion in Kazakhstan
The majority of Kazakhstan's citizens are Sunni of the Hanafi school, traditionally including ethnic Kazakhs, who constitute about 63.6% of the population, as well as ethnic Uzbeks, Uighurs, and Tatars. Less than 1% are part of the Shafi`i and Shi'a. There are a total of 2,300 mosques, all of them affiliated with the Spiritual Association of Muslims of Kazakhstan, headed by a supreme mufti. The Eid al-Adha is recognized as a national holiday.
Less than 25% of the population of Kazakhstan is Russian Orthodox, traditionally including ethnic Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians. Other Christian groups include Roman Catholics, Protestants, Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons. There are a total of 265 registered Orthodox churches, 93 Roman Catholic churches, and 543 Protestant churches and prayer houses. Christmas, rendered in the Russian Orthodox manner according to the Julian calendar, is recognized as a national holiday in Kazakhstan.

162.Synagogue (Central synagogue of Kazakhstan)
The first Jewish community was formed in Kazakhstan at the end of the 19th century, when the army soldiers returned to the civilian life after their service. They organized the first synagogue in a humble wooden house in 1884. In 1907 they registered the first Jewish praying society.
The community became much bigger during the Great Patriotic War, when many Jewish families were evacuated to Almaty. Many of those Jewish migrants were well educated and had university degrees and were skillful in different professions. They influenced the industry, medicine, arts, education and science of Kazakhstan. The off springs of those Jewish built the first Synagogue on Rayimbek Avenue, 206. This is a majestic building, it is a spiritual center of Judaism in Almaty.
The Synagogue is decorated in white and turquoise colors; it has beautiful stained glass windows. The Synagogue is divided into several functional compartments under a large dome. The dome is crowned by David’s star.
The interior is decorated with gorgeous ornamentation. The ancient rolled books are kept in the Synagogue, they are very important for Judaists. There is a big library in the Synagogue.
National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan l Astana l Kazakhstan
The museum has been created in the framework of the Cultural Heritage State Program on behalf of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. July 2, 2013 the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan № 675 was issued on the establishment of the Republican State Institution National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
According to the Decree of the Head of the State Darkhan Mynbay has been appointed the Director of the National Museum of Kazakhstan. The museum is located on the main square of the country - the Independence Square, which harmoniously blends into the single architectural ensemble with the Қазақ Елі monument, the Independence Palace, the Palace of Peace and Harmony, the Hazret Sultan cathedral mosque and the National University of Arts. Many values identified during the Cultural Heritage State Program constitute the invaluable fund of the National Museum of Kazakhstan. The museum building is an eye catcher with its unusual external form. The largest unique museum complex has an area of 74,000 sq.m. and consists of seven blocks with a variable number of storeys to the ninth floor. Exhibit space occupies 14 rooms with a total area of over 14,000 sq.m. The National Museum of Kazakhstan is composed of the following halls: Hall of Astana, Hall of Independent Kazakhstan, Hall of Gold, Hall of Ancient and Medieval History, the Hall of History, Ethnography Hall, Halls of Modern Art. The structure of the museum on studying the national heritage is represented by the Research Institute. There are also facilities for a children's museum, children's art centre, two showrooms, restoration workshops, laboratories, professional depositories, a scientific library with a reading room, a conference hall and souvenir stalls. The museum is fitted out with equipment of international standard, one uses modern exhibition technology for expositions: a unique curved screen with a special content, working for two halls, a media floor, a dynamic layout of the central part of modern Astana, numerous media outlets, holograms, LED-technology, touch-sensitive kiosks, and a multimedia guide providing information in three languages.
The museum has been developing various kinds of excursions - survey and thematic, philosophical, special programs in the form of interactive sessions and gaming excursions. The National Museum aims to become a modern intellectual cultural institution, a place for the analysis, comparison, reflection, discussion, and evaluation of statements on historical and cultural heritage of Kazakhstan. Contemporary museum is always an open dialogue with the visitor. This museum has done everything possible to make its visitors active participants in the conversation with the history.

One of the oldest cities in the country, Almaty is a city of young people. A third of its population is 30 years old or younger. Almaty has more universities than any other cities in Kazakhstan. It is also a city of sport with modern competition and training facilities. Almaty hosts the highest number of various sporting events and campaigns to promote a healthy lifestyle -- over 250 events annually. The landscape of Almaty allows each of its inhabitants to have an active and interesting lifestyle and go in for their favourite sports. The most popular sports in Almaty are skiing and snowboarding.
Cultural Heritage of Almaty
In Kazakh the word 'alma' means apple; and Almaty is literally translated as 'rich in apples'. The city was named in honour of apples, which have grown there since ancient times. This is why the emblem of Almaty, and of the whole Seven Rivers region, bears the image of this fruit. Almaty has an ancient and rich history. As a transit point on the Silk Road, the city was an international trade hub in Central Asia. Silk traders from China as well as ivory and spice sellers from India would meet there to leave a unique trace on the culture of the city. The city has been home to many prominent figures of science, arts, culture and education, who made important contributions to the cultural development of Kazakhstan. Today Almaty has a well-developed cultural infrastructure and skilled human resources, and it is home to the leading theatre, arts museum and library organisations of Kazakhstan.
Almaty regularly hosts international cultural events such as the international music festival 'Voice of Asia', the International Eurasia Film Festival and the International Jazz Festival.
Legacy
The hosting of the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty will have a positive impact on the city and its inhabitants. It will foster a new wave of future leaders and inspire new achievements aiming at sustainable development through the prism of the Universiade and university sports.
Infrastructure: construction of new roads and improvement of the transportation system, construction of new sports facilities and of a university campus that will utilise advanced power-saving and environmentally-friendly technology
Education: training programme for sports reporters, sports doctors, sports event managers and sports tourism managers
Health care: a positive effect on the health of Almaty inhabitants, increasing their life expectancy and level of comfort
Tourism: an intensive development of tourist infrastructures (increase in the number of hotels and ski resorts) is planned during the preparation process of the Universiade.

Geography of Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is located in Central Asia and Eastern Europe at 48°N 68°E / 48; 68. With an area of about 2,724,800 square kilometers, Kazakhstan is more than twice the combined size of the other four Central Asian states, or about twice the size of Alaska. The country borders Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan to the south; Russia to the north; Russia and the Caspian Sea to the west; and China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to the east.

5. The Academy of Science and inside museums
The grand opening of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic took place on June 1, 1946. The great scientists such as: Vernadsky V., Berg L., Gumilev L., Mandelshtam N., Fesenko V., Tihov G.A., contributed to its organization. They moved to Kazakhstan during World War II. The first president of the Academy Kanysh Satpayev was the prominent geologist. He has developed the map of mineral resources of the country; Kanysh Satpayev was the first Kazakh academician. The building is located on 28, Shevchenko street, and it was built in 1957. Now it is a historical and architectural monument. The author of the project was the architect Chusev A.V. (one of his famous works is Lenin's mausoleum in Moscow). The great building of the Academy is a center of city complex, located at the intersection of Valikhanov and Shevchenko Streets. It has three main elements in its composition: the monument, the portal and the adjacent housing. There are rows of fountains and vegetation along the axis of the central building (designed by the architects Ripinsky N., Tolmachev V.). There is a monument of Valikhanov Ch. (made by the sculptor Nauryzbaev K.) near the building. There is a bust of Pushkin A. (made by the sculptor Bichugov A.) and the fountain called Zodiac (designed by the architect Katsev V., sculptors Tverdohlebov V., Tatarinov A.) on the east side of the building. There is a complex Gylym Ordasy inside the building. The complex includes a Central Scientific Library and 18 research organizations and museums devoted to Nature, Archaeology, History of Kazakhstan science, and to Rare manuscripts.
