Meteorite Impacts Chelyabinsk Russia Feb 15th, 2012
A meteor hit the city of Chelyabinsk in the Russian Ural Mountains Friday morning injuring hundreds, causing minor damage to buildings and temporarily disrupting Internet communication, officials said.
Yelena Smirnykh, deputy information chief of the Emergency Situations Ministry said that 474 people sought medical assistance after the explosion. Five of them were hospitalized, most of the injuries being cuts by shattered window glass, she said.
Roskosmos, the Russian Space Agency, said it had not launched any objects on Thursday or Friday, Smirnykh said. At this point we are confident that we are dealing with a meteor rain resulting from the explosion of a large meteor causing flashes and sound shock waves in the Chelyabinsk region and observed in three other regions of Russia too.
About 20,000 ministry personnel and 3,000 hardware units are now deployed in the area to assess the damage and look for traces and pieces of the meteor none of which had been found yet by Friday noon, she said.
The meteor entered the atmosphere over the north of Kazakhstan and flew over part of Russia before exploding in Chelyabinsk, Russian Emergency Situations Ministry Crisis Center Chief Vladimir Stepanov said.
We have deployed 28 stations in the area to monitor radiation levels which up to now remain normal, Stepanov said. He added that monitors did not have sufficient time to issue a warning before the meteor crashed.
Dozens of witnesses reported seeing a bright flash in the air and hearing a loud explosion seconds before buildings and houses in the eastern part of Chelyabinsk felt the impact.
When I saw some white narrow cloud moving outside the window I ran up to it and saw a huge blinding flash. It was like the way I would imagine a nuclear bomb. At first, there was no sound at all as if I suddenly went deaf, Nadezhda Golovko, deputy head of Chelyabinsk Secondary School #130 said in a phone interview on a land line as cellphone communication was cutoff in the area. Then I started hearing loud sounds of something exploding, four or five, one after another, and then the school windows started breaking.
There were about 300 students in the school at the time she said.
Luckily no one was injured, she added. But all of them were in shock, especially when we found out it was not a plane crash but a meteor falling down.
Thirty-two windows in the three-story building were shattered, Golovko said.
No need to say the classes are over for now much to the delight of the over-excited schoolchildren, she added.
In the nearby Zinc Plant part of the zinc concentrate storage facility was destroyed including its roof, Natalia Vasilyeva, the plant's spokesperson said.
Something big exploded right over the plant, luckily no one was killed but several workers received minor injuries and have already been treated for their wounds and cuts, Vasilyeva said in a phone interview. Some people thought that the storage was on fire but what many witnesses took for smoke was a cloud of zinc concentrate powder thrown up and around resulting from the explosion impact.
Zinc concentrate is totally harmless, she said.
Dozens of witnesses shot videos and photos of the incident and posted them to the web. Russia-24 aired dramatic footage of the destruction in an indoor athletic stadium in Chelyabinsk, where at least two people were seen covered with blood among debris. No one was killed, the report said.
Russia was last hit by a major meteor on Feb. 12, 1947, when the Sikhote-Alin Meteor, estimated to weight over 23 tons, exploded over the taiga in the Russian Far East. The explosion created 106 craters over 13.5 square miles of wooded area.

Enormous seven-storey inflatable football invades pitch in Chelyabinsk
A huge inflatable football has taken over a pitch in Chelyabinsk in celebration of the World Cup, as shown in footage shot on Monday.
“The size of the ball is 20 metres in height and 20 metres (60 feet) in diameter, the bottom is 14x14 metres (46 feet) – a circle with a diameter of 14 metres. It is made of specialised polyester fabric. Its weight is a half of ton. Two-and-a-half square kilometres of fabric was purchased and the ball was made,” Nero director Artem Mazanov said.
The ball was inflated in the city’s Central Stadium.
Although a record has not yet been registered, it is believed that no one has created an inflatable football the size of a seven-storey building.

Meteorite blast in Russia injures hundreds
A meteorite exploded above the city of Chelyabinsk in eastern Russia at around 9:20 am local time (0320 GMT) on Friday, creating a shockwave that injured hundreds of people.
According to Reuters, a witness reported hearing a huge blast early in the morning and feeling a shockwave in a 19-story building in the town center. The sounds of car alarms and breaking windows could be heard in the area [...] and mobile phones were working intermittently.
The blast was reported to have occurred at an altitude of 10 to 20 kilometers.
Meteorites are debris from comets and asteroids. When a meteorite enters the earth's atmosphere at a high speed, frictional, pressure and chemical interactions between the meteorite and the atmosphere cause the rock to heat up and melt, forming a fireball that can reach temperatures of 1,650 degrees Celsius.

Russian 'Skinhead Army' attacks rock fest
(Video courtesy - )
Police in Central Russia have detained eight people suspected of leading an attack on a rock festival. They say the brawl could have started after a local cafe owner argued with a member of the audience. Up to a hundred young men started beating up the crowd with clubs at the 'Tornado' festival in the Chelyabinsk region. Some eyewitnesses said they even heard gunshots. More than ten people have been injured, two remain in hospital. Earlier reports suggested the mob were members of a nationalist gang, but regional authorities have since denied those claims. Some three thousand people were at the festival during the attack.

Moments of Meteor Hitting on Earth Russia 2013 Meteorite
MOSCOW: A plunging meteor exploded with a blinding flash above central Russia on Friday, setting off a shockwave that shattered windows and hurt almost 1,000 people in an event unprecedented in modern times.
Experts insisted the meteor's fiery entry into the atmosphere was not linked to an asteroid that was expected to pass about 17,200 miles above the Earth in an unusually close approach.
But the extraordinary event brought morning traffic to a sudden halt in the Urals city of Chelyabinsk as shocked drivers stopped to watch the falling meteor partially burning up in the lower atmosphere.
The fall of such a large meteor estimated as weighing dozens of tonnes was extremely rare, while the number of casualties as a consequence of its burning up around a heavily-inhabited area was unprecedented.
Chelyabinsk regional governor Mikhail Yurevich, quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency, said 950 people were injured, with two-thirds of the injuries light wounds from glass shards and other materials blown out by the shockwave.
Windows were blown out by the shockwave across the city with the ministry saying almost 300 buildings were damaged including schools, hospitals, a zinc factory and even an ice hockey stadium.
At 9.20am an object was observed above Chelyabinsk which flew by at great speed and left a trail behind.
Within two minutes there were two bangs, regional emergencies official Yuri Burenko said in a statement. —AFP
