The Antwerp Central Station, also known as Middenstatie (Middle station) or Spoorwegkathedraal (Railroad Cathedral), was first used in 1905. The structure is made up from a steel platform covering and a stone station building in an eclectic style. Recently, the station was completely renovated and in 2007 a tunnel underneath the station and a part of Antwerp was opened, reverting the station’s status as a terminus where are all trains have to turn back. In 2009, the American magazine Newsweek chose the Antwerp Central Station as the fourth most beautiful train station in the world.

Antwerpen Central Station • Belgium
Antwerpen-Centraal (Antwerp Central) is the name of the main railway station in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The station is operated by the national railway company NMBS/SNCB.
History and architecture:
The original station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905 as a replacement for the original terminus of the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp Railway. The stone clad terminus buildings, with a vast dome above the waiting room hall were designed by Louis Delacenserie and the vast (185 metres long and 44 metres high) iron and glass trainshed by Clement van Bogaert. The viaduct into the station is also a notable structure designed by local architect Jan Van Asperen.
The station is now widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium[citation needed], although the extraordinary eclecticism of the influences on Delacenserie's design had led to a difficulty in assigning it to a particular architectural style. In W. G. Sebald's novel Austerlitz an ability to appreciate the full range of the styles that might have influenced Delacensiere is used to demonstrate the brilliance of the fictional architectural historian who is the novel's protagonist.
In 2009 the American magazine Newsweek judged Antwerpen-Centraal the world's fourth most beautiful station.
Expansion for high-speed trains:
In 1998 large-scale reconstruction work began to convert the station from a terminus to a through station. A new tunnel has been excavated between Berchem station in the south of the city and Antwerpen-Dam station in the north, passing under Central station, with platforms on two underground levels. This will allow Thalys, HSL 4 and HSL-Zuid high-speed trains to travel through Antwerp Central without the need to turn around (the previous layout obliged Amsterdam-Brussels trains to call only at Berchem or reverse at Central).
The major elements of the construction project are now complete, and the first through trains ran on 25 March 2007.
This complete project has cost approximately €1.6 billion.
Station layout:
The station has four levels and 14 tracks arranged as follows:
* Level +1: The original station, 6 terminating tracks, arranged as two groups of three and separated by a central opening allowing views of the lower levels
* Level 0: Houses ticketing facilities and commercial space
* Level −1: 7 m below street level, 4 terminating tracks, arranged in two pairs
* Level −2: 18 m below street level, 4 tracks, leading to the two tracks of the tunnel under the city (used by high-speed trains and fast domestic InterCity services)
Popular culture:
A staged flash mob-like event at the station in early 2009 became a viral video, and featured the song Do-Re-Mi from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. It was performed by 200 dancers of various ages, along with several dozen waiting passengers who just jumped in and joined the dance themselves. The video was produced to publicize Op zoek naar Maria, the Belgian TV version of the BBC talent competition program How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, about the search for an actress to play the lead role in a stage revival of The Sound of Music.
The station, and descriptions of its history and architecture, also feature prominently in the opening part of Sebald's 'Austerlitz'.

Do Re Mi - Wellington Railway Station, NZ - Tawa College
The students of Tawa College, Wellington, New Zealand, did a staged performance of a remixed version of Julie Andrew's Do-Re-Mi at the Wellington Railway Station. They were filmed with the purpose of creating a music-video supplimentary to their annual musical performances - starting on Friday 24th July 2009 @ Tawa College.
The Do-Re-Mi dance idea has been inspired by a mass-mob dance in a Belgium train station, as what seems to be dozens and dozens of people dancing in public, taking many daily commuters by total surprise!
Check it out:
Tawa College's dancing was also captured by TV One news cameras:

Passenger and Freight Trains in Brussels, Antwerp & Liège, Belgium
A collection of shots I took of passenger and freight trains while I was visiting Belgium. Shots are featured in Brussels, Antwerp and Liège.
0:00 - 8:55, here I was at Bruxelles-Schuman station where we see mostly electric multiple units arriving and departing the station.
8:55 - 11:06, here we visit Mechelen station where we see our first freight train passing as well as a loco hauled passenger train.
11:06 - 11:39, next we visit Lier station where we see two electric locos double headed on a mixed freight, this was my last freight train I got while I was in Belgium.
11:39 - 15:33, next we visit the beautiful Antwerp Central Station, it was just a brief visit so I never got many shots while I was there but there are a couple of catches.
15:33 - 26:11, next we visit Bruxelles Central (Brussels Central Station) where we see plenty of action including plenty of loco hauled trains and some electric multiple units.
26:11 - 28:28, next we make a brief visit to Liège, again like Antwerp I wasn't able to get many shots as I was changing trains there so I only managed to catch a handful of stuff.
28:28 - 36:42, and finally our last location is Gare de Bruxelles-Nord (Brussels North Station) where we see plenty of action around the station, plenty of loco hauled trains as well as the odd electric multiple units.
Footage was taken on the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th of August 2017.

THE HEAT Flashmob - Central Station Sydney
To celebrate the release of THE HEAT on Blu-ray & DVD, Australian TV star Sally Obermeder leads dozens of SPANX-clad dancers in this spectacular flashmob held during rush hour at Sydney's Central Station.
In one side-splitting scene, McCarthy challenges Bullock's up tight character by taking a pair of scissors to her immaculate suit, only to reveal some figure-hugging SPANX underneath.
So, in a nod to the famous slimming essential, many of the performers wore SPANX, matched with killer heels, FBI caps and aviator shades.
Enjoy!
THE HEAT is out now on Blu-ray & DVD

In 2009 the American magazine Newsweek judged Antwerpen-Centraal the world's fourth greatest train station. In 2014 the British-American magazine Mashable awarded Antwerpen-Centraal the first place for the most beautiful railway station in the world.
Train hall
The originally iron and glass train hall was designed by Clément Van Bogaert, an engineer, and covers an area of 12,000 square metres. The height of the station was once necessary for the smoke of steam locomotives. The roof of the train hall was originally made of steel.
World War II damage and restoration
During World War II, severe damage was inflicted to the train hall by the impact of V-2 bombs, without destroying the structural stability of the building, according to the National Railway Company of Belgium. Nevertheless, it has been claimed that the warping of the substructure due to a V-2 bomb had caused constructional stresses.
The impact of the bombs are still visible due to a lasting wave-distortion in the roofing of the hall.
In the mid-twentieth century, the building's condition had deteriorated so far that its demolition was being considered. The station was closed on 31 January 1986 for safety reasons, after which restoration work to the roof (starting at the end of March 1986 and finishing in September 1986) and façades was performed.
The stress problems due to the impact of bombs during the war was reportedly solved by the use of polycarbonate sheets instead of glass, due to its elasticity and its relatively low weight (40% less than glass), which avoided the need for extra supporting pillars.
After replacing or repairing steel elements, they were painted burgundy. Copper was also used during the renovation process of the roof.

This complete project has cost approximately €1.6 billion.
The station was awarded a Grand Prix at the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards in 2011.

Newly renovated Antwerp train station
Antwerp is a port city on Belgium’s River Scheldt, with history dating to the Middle Ages. In its center, the centuries-old Diamond District houses thousands of diamond traders, cutters and polishers. Antwerp’s Flemish Renaissance architecture is typified by the Grote Markt, a central square in the old town. At the 17th-century Rubens House, period rooms display works by the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens.
