Puerto Escondido, Mexico
Puerto Escondido is on the Pacific Coast of southern Mexico in the state of Oaxaca and the town was founded in 1928. Today it is known for great surfing beaches and attracts surfers from around the world.
There are surf spots for all levels. For the beginner there is Playa Carrizalillo. For the intermediate there is La Punta which means the point. For the advanced surfer playa Zicatela is the legendary 3 klms long stretch of beach world renown as the Mexican Pipeline.
Las Juqilena in the center of town features large portions of authentic Oaxacan cuisine. Very affordable with fresh made tortillas, salsas and dishes like this fajita fiesta of grilled, chicken, beef, pork and vegetables. Mescal is the local drink but for a truly refreshing beverage nothing beats a cold Victoria beer.
We found Casa Mocha Blue on AirBnB. The reviews were great and the property was even better than the photos. The owner Luis Navarro is an AirBnB Superhost and the villa with a swimming pool, four bedrooms, and roof top hammocks overlooking Zicatela beach and beyond was a surfer’s dream. It was just a few steps from the front door to the sand.
One of the highest rated restaurants in Puerto Escondido is Lychee, with a sand floor, a cool, hip vibe, and an Asian-inspired menu. The kitchen is in the middle of it all.
The passion fruit margarita sets the tone of the tastiness yet to come. Curries are king at Lychee as is the seared tuna sashimi with sesame.
The Adoquin is a night time market with everything for the tourist. From handicrafts and tee shirts to tasty treats like tacos al pestor and freshly made ice creams and gelatos.
In the center of town is a giant supermarket called Chedraui - or Super Che. It is air conditioned and has most everything from beverages, snacks, cheeses, Mexican specialties, fresh breads, and produce to kitchen supplies, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, clothing and two ATMs. Its like Costco with a latin flair. The staff are super friendly and the products are good.
Staying at Casa Mocha includes a delicious daily breakfast which features coffee, teas, fresh juices, fresh fruit, yogurt and main course from chilaquiles to ham and cheese omelettes.
The week before we arrived, local surfing star Oscar Moncada died in a car accident Moncada was one of the best and most experienced surfers in Puerto. He surfed the big wave breaks for two decades. In 2006, he won the Rip Curl Pro Search Trials in Mexico and was a pillar in the local Puerto surfing community.
Surfing in Puerto is both challenging and rewarding. Zicatela beach is the home to the big waves where annual competitions in November can dazzle observers with the sheer force of the open ocean. Occasionally tumultuous waves will make this a place for experts only.
No wet suits are needed here where the ocean temperatures are in the 80s. There are left and right breaks in Puerto and there are some long waves that don't close out too quickly. One needs to be savvy in reading the waves. The conditions at Zacatela are ideal for tubular waves or the famed Mexican pipeline - like those found on the North Shore of Oahu.
At La Punta there is a reef break with coral and rocky bottoms. Sometimes in spring the waves can get to 8 feet high.
The season for big surf is May - September but the waves will be more crowded. South swells are the best at Puerto and when the tide is low and going high is ideal.
Carrizalillo is a good place to learn to surf. English speaking teachers will get just about anyone at any age up on a board. It is also a nice swimming beach as well as for sunbathing on lounges were the beach side restaurant will serve tacos, huevos rancheros and quesadillas along with ice cold beers.
There are a number of surf board rental shops along Zicatela. At Crickets, the owner is really knowledgeable about the boards and good at matching the ability and size of the surfer with the current conditions. Unless you plan to go after the giant waves, a short board is best.
