The Central Tramway is the oldest surviving tramway company in the country, having commenced service in 1881 and is still in operation to this day. Join us as we take the ride down to the beach, and then take a look at the cars operating the 233ft journey over a 1 in 2 gradient. With single fares at £1 it's a great way to get to and from the beach with ease.

Established in 1881, the Central Tramway is the oldest surviving tramway company in the UK. The same corporate identity still operates the tram to this day.
Originally one of 5 cliff railways (only two remain open to the public), or funiculars, it serves as an important reminder of Scarborough as being the UK's first seaside resort as well as part of the town's proud Victorian heritage.
This video shows one car descending while another ascending to the top station, where the driving is conducted with full view of the tramway (unless the original steam-powered station which was replaced by motor in 1932).
The 1881 Central Tramway (Funicular), Scarborough, Yorkshire
This 1881 funicular railway runs down to the Scarborough South Bay beach from behind the Grand Hotel. It is run by a private company. Once powered by steam it has been electrified since 1910 and operated from the top station.

As I was on holiday, I decided to film the tram ride to the top as I was heading back to opposite the Railway station to catch the bus back to Primrose Valley, and also because no one has filmed the tramway at Scarborough yet.
