Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is the center of Chile's largest and the most densely populated conurbation. The city is entirely located in the country's central valley, at an elevation of 520 m (1,706 ft) above sea level.
Founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within a few hours of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

A day in Los Andes, Chile's Central Valley - Part 1-3.mov
Part 1.3 of a Life in a day proposal video. One day at the feet of the
Los Andes mountains, from the Chile's central valley. One day of treking to the top of one of these hills ( about 2.000 mts. high)
An amazing view of the valley and the capital city of Santiago, in one
of the most cold winters in 20 years in this country. The mountains
are very close to the city; so it's possible to change from a urban
scenery to a wild landscape in a couple of hours.
The total secuence records the entire trip from our homes to the top of the hill in one day. The total time is 20 minutes and it's divided in 3 parts

Chile's central regions offer culture, diversity and unforgettable memories
The central regions of Chile consist of coastline, the booming capital of Santiago and the ever famous Chilean wine country.
Chile's breathtaking coastline offers spectacular views of crashing waves, jagged landscapes, and smooth white sand beaches. Anchored by the affluent resort city Viña del Mar and the historic port of Valparaiso -- declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architectural and cultural importance -- a number of charming beach towns spread to the north and south. One must-see is Isla Negra, where Pablo Neruda's former home looks out to sea and provides a snapshot into the life and mind of Chile's most beloved poet. All along the coast, elegant homes and hotels are nestled into the hills, and a number of excellent restaurants serve some of the best seafood you'll ever taste.
Chosen by the New York Times as 2011's #1 destination to visit, Santiago is a dynamic and contemporary metropolis located in the heart of Chile's fertile central valley. Chile's capital is a vibrant city full of character, with a thriving arts culture, trendy restaurant scene, and lively nightlife. Embraced on all sides by mountains -- the mighty Andes to the east and the smaller coastal range to the west -- on a clear day Santiago boasts one of the most incredible city views in the world. With world-class skiing, wine tours, biking, and trekking right its doorstep, Santiago is a city full of exhilarating possibilities.
Chile is an agricultural paradise whose bounty of fruits and vegetables supplies the world's marketplaces and whose wine graces tables on every continent. A Mediterranean climate and increasingly organic, sustainable farming practices combine to create high-quality wines which are the purest expression of their privileged terroir.
