Icheon (Korean pronunciation: [i.tɕʰʌn]) is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It should not be confused with the much larger Incheon Metropolitan City. Neighboring districts include Yeoju City, Gwangju City, Yongin City, and Anseong City within Gyeonggi Province, as well as Eumseong County in North Chungcheong Province. Together with Yeoju, Icheon is known as a center of South Korean ceramic manufacturing and is a UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art. Other famous local products include peaches and rice. Local institutions of higher learning include Korea Tourism College and Chungkang College of Cultural Industries.
The Yeongdong Expressway and Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway pass through Icheon. In 2016, the city will connect into the Seoul Metropolitan Subway via Yeoju Line's Icheon Station.[2]
Icheon is home to Hynix, the world's second largest memory chip maker.
The Icheon Ceramics Village features 300-plus ceramics-making firms in the area of Sugwang-ri, Sindun-myeon, Saeum-dong, and a popular visitor attraction.[7] They use traditional skills and produce porcelains in some 40 traditional firewood kilns. This pottery is recognized both at home and abroad for its quality.
The Saeum-dong and Sindun-myeon areas also include a ceramics village with many ceramics stores. Potters have researched traditional methods and revived the manufacture of ceramics in the style of Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain here. The village is the center of the effort to preserve these traditions.

Seokchon Lake Park in Songpa District, Seoul includes Seokchon Lake[1] and Lotte World’s Magic Island. The lake's area is 217,850 m2 and its average depth is about 4.5 meters.
Seokchon Lake was originally a part of the Han River. There was an island named Burido in the middle of the Han River dividing it into two, Songpa River (the north part) and Sincheon River(the south part). In April 1971, a construction to connect Burido with land has started. It was proceeded by enlarging the Songpa River and closing the Sincheon River. By this construction, the closed southern part of the Han River became Seokchon Lake, and the land made by the reclamation project became Jamsil-dong and Sincheon-dong.[3]
In the 1970s, Seokchon Lake used to be a tacky lake right after the construction. So people created a walking trail and planted trees, transforming the area into a park. After some time, Seokchon Lake started to suffer from water pollution, causing foul smells. This caused people to avoid Seokchon Lake Park. In 2001, Songpagu designated it to make into a tourist attraction and did some maintenance business. This caused the water to become clear and the ecological system to be recovered.[2]
The East Lake has a trail which is connected to West Lake under the Jamsilhosugyo (Jamsil Lake Bridge). Beside the trail, there are some facilities including some rest area and public restrooms. At the north side, there is a two-floor building which has the Songpa Travel Information Center on the second floor.[3] In October 2014, the Rubber Duck was held on the East Lake by Lotte Group to celebrate the opening of the new Lotte World Mall. Also, the Super Moon Project was held in September 2016, an art project planned by the art collaborative group FriendsWithYou. The Super Moon is a 60-foot inflatable sculpture surrounded by a garden of eight symbolic planets of color and light.
The West Lake is 112,065㎡[2] large and is slightly larger than the East Lake. Around the West Lake, there are Seoul Playground and Lotte World’s Magic Island.

Seed Industry Soars to New Heights
The seed industry is considered the basis for the agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors.
And Korea has recently entered the global seed market.
Let's now take a moment to see where Korea stands today... in this particular field.
A small seed can provide a competitive edge to farmers and affect the national economy. We explore Korea's seed industry, as the country takes a step toward becoming a global seed powerhouse.
Roses have opened into beautiful blooms. This rose variety is called Deep Purple. Deep Purple roses were first cross-fertilized in 2006 and registered as a new plant variety overseas in 2014.
As you can see, Deep Purple roses have beautiful, two-toned petals. There are no thorns on stems, so they're easy to handle. They also grow fast, giving a high yield. We collect royalties by exporting this variety overseas.
Deep Purple was exported to 13 countries including Colombia, Ecuador and Kenya from 2011 to 2015, generating 1.1 million U.S. dollars.
Encouraged by Deep Purple's success, the Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services continue to develop new rose varieties, while carefully studying the latest trends in the global seed market.
In Europe, English-style roses are trending. They have sepals where a pistil should be. We are developing new rose varieties,
while keeping up with the latest trends.
The seed industry is considered the basis for the agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors.
The global seed market grew, on average, 10 percent every year from 2002, reaching 45.9 billion dollars in 2013. The market is expected to grow to nearly 170 billion dollars by 2020.
Korea, a country that pays about 20 million dollars in seed royalties a year, has recently entered the global seed market.
Since 2012, the Korean government has launched the Golden Seed Project, an initiative aimed at developing competitive plant varieties. Professor Yim Yong-pyo of Chungnam National University leads the Vegetable Seed Development Division that studies five crops - napa cabbages, white radishes, paprikas, chili peppers and watermelons. Yim says a single seed can be more valuable than gold.
If you look at the value chain in the bioindustry, seeds are the basis of different sectors ranging from agriculture, pharmaceutical, environment and energy. The impact of their value on industries is huge.
The company's R&D center in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do Province, studies about 1,000 vegetable varieties, from napa cabbages, chili peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, onions to green onions. It's healthy and delicious vegetable seeds are both delivered to Korean farmers and exported overseas. Among them is a watermelon variety that won the All-American Selections, or AAS award, in recognition for its great garden performance.
It owes the AAS honor to its unique color, high total yield, great taste, pest resistance and high sugar content. Another interesting variety developed by the company is crunchy green chili peppers without a pungent flavor, which reflect the needs of farmers and consumers alike.
This green chili pepper variety is full of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors that can reduce blood sugar. It will be beneficial to our health.
The company exports about 340 seed varieties to 190 companies in 36 countries across Asia, Africa and Europe. About 130 seed varieties have been already developed, ready for market release within the next five years. The CEO of the company aims to generate 30 million dollars in exports by 2020 and believes that Korea has huge potential in the global seed market.
Korea's advanced breeding capabilities are well-known throughout the world. Multinational companies are showing great interest and contacting Korean companies. Plenty of genetic resources are available in Korea, so I believe Korean plant breeders will continue to develop high-performing vegetable varieties.
Developing a high quality seed variety is a challenging task that often takes more than 10 years of research. It requires advanced technology and long-term investment in genome research and collection, management and cultivation of genetic resources. Korea accounts for a mere one percent of the global seed market. But the government and businesses are optimistic about its future growth.
The seed business isn't something you can master within a year or two. It needs more time to grow. Continued investment will be the key to globalizing Korea's seed market.
Seed development is a time-consuming process full of trials and errors. Still, it is critical to the food security of future generations, which is another reason for high expectations toward Korea's seed industry.

ukchon Hanok Village is a Korean traditional village in Seoul with a long history located on the top of a hill between Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace and Jongmyo Royal Shrine. The traditional village is composed of lots of alleys, hanok[1] and is preserved to show a 600-year-old urban environment.
A poll of nearly 2,000 foreign visitors, conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in November 2011, stated that exploring the narrow streets of Bukchon was their fourth favorite activity in Seoul.[3]
According to data by the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, 30,000 people visited the area in 2007. However, after the village was featured in television programmes, such as 1 Night 2 Days and Personal Taste, the number rose to 318,000 in 2010. In 2012 the figure is expected to double to more than 600,000.[4]
A large beautiful hanok has open to the public in 2015, as part of the Seoul Museum of History. It is located in an alley, just on the foot of the hill. Entrance is free, the visit allows to see those traditional housing in 15–20 minutes.
If you want to get to Bukchon Hanok Village it is close to Samcheongdong street and located between the Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. You can get to the Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul by taking the subway to the Anguk Station (Seoul Subway Line 3). Take exit 3 and head to your right. After about 200 meters you will see large information signs that begin the Bukchon Village Walking Tour. In this Hanok Village there is a free walking tour is about 2–3 hours long taking you to multiple destinations will you collect stamps from each of them and at the end you can get a keychain at the end. The village is the home to Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, Seoul Intangible Cultural Heritage Center, Donglim Knot Museum, Gahoe Museum, Han Sangsu Embroidery Museum, Bukchon Asian Art Museum, and Owl Museum. Sll place to you should make sure to visit on your trip to Korea. In Bukchon that has over 600 years of history surrounding it many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. They have very picturesque locations and beautiful architecture that you no longer seen in modern-day society. Overall the villages are amazing locations that everyone should see and enjoy. Many tourists come here for photo opportunities and to immerse themselves in the history that is now surrounded by the modern Korea. You can make a guided tour reservation to help you go around the trail. There are tons if things to do while you are there. Recently in 2018 because of so many tourists visiting the area they have changed the hours of when people may visit from 9-5 Monday-Saturday and Sundays is now closed off to nonresidents.[5] Currently there is an issue with tourists making trouble for the residents that live there; one resident even being yelled at for driving their car on its narrow roads. Residents who live there are not very happy that their resident environment is being taken over by an overwhelming number of tourists taking photos all the time. This village averages about 10,000 visitors a day. Because of the tourists the number of residents fell from over 9000 to 7530; they say the tourists are driving the residents out of the neighborhood.
