Centralia Burning Ghost Town - Pennsylvania USA
Centralia, Pennsylvania was nearly entirely evacuated following a coal mine fire, burning beneath the town since 1962.
Centralia’s fire started in 1962, when residents turned an old strip mine into a dump, and setting the rubbish alight. The fire spread through an unsealed opening to the underground coal mines, igniting a seam of coal, and the fire has been burning to this day.
In 1992, Pennsylvania condemned the town and claimed it under eminent domain in an attempt for force the remaining residents out. Some sued, and were allowed to stay.
A section of State Route 61 was abandoned after it began to buckle and crumble from the underground fire.
The fire stretches 12km, and burns underneath an area of 15 square kilometres, 300 feet below ground, authorities say the fire could burn for another 250 years.
The town now mostly attracts tourists who visit an abandoned highway, where many profanities and obscene pictures are spray painted onto it, over time the highway has earned the nickname Graffiti Highway.
Centralia is rumored to have inspired Silent Hill.

Centralia BURNING GHOST TOWN - Abandoned Pennsylvania Town
The Centralia burning ghost town was evacuated by a raging underground mine fire that started in 1962, leaving the town completely abandoned. Today, the Centralia mine fire still rages and has been burning for over 50 years. Come with us as we explore Centralia graffiti highway, walk through this literal ghost town, and take you on an exciting adventure.
The town in central PA, aka Centralia Pennsylvania lost town, is known for it’s influence on the production of Silent Hill. Many come to this town in search of urban exploring, creepy places, and graffiti, but it’s actually a local hangout spot for families, mountain bikers, and ATV riders alike. The vibe of Centralia was definitely less creepy than we expected, but I guess “ghost town” is the right word for a reason because all the houses were knocked down by the government so that homeless persons could not inhabit the area.
Centralia is actually not completely a ghost town, as 7 residents fought to stay in the town and remain there today. The town with a population of 7 has been stripped of it’s zip code and no longer has any municipal workers to maintain the area.
Centralia graffiti highway is the main destination when visiting this area and because the Centralia mine fire is still blazing today, it is slowly corroding the highway allowing smoke to billow out of the cracks during cold winter days. Another creepy fact according to History.com is “Graves in the town’s two cemeteries are believed to have dropped into the abyss of fire that rages below them.” A 12 year old boy was also reported to have fallen into a sink hole in his backyard, nearly escaping death.
Centralia was relatively lively when we visited so I don’t know if we would call it one of the creepy places Pennsylvania has to offer. It’s most likely a lot creepier during the winter when you can see smoke coming up from the ground. Either way, we hope you guys liked this video and subscribe if you want to see more content like this! We will see you guys tomorrow, seeya!

Centralia (ghost town) Graffiti Highway, Columbia County, Pennsylvania
Centralia (ghost town) Graffiti Highway, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.
Centralia is a borough and near-ghost town in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. Its population has dwindled from more than 1,000 residents in 1980 to 63 by 1990, to only five in 2017—a result of the coal mine fire which has been burning beneath the borough since 1962. Centralia, which is part of the Bloomsburg–Berwick metropolitan area, is the least-populated municipality in Pennsylvania.
All real estate in the borough was claimed under eminent domain in 1992 and therein condemned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Centralia's ZIP code was discontinued by the Postal Service in 2002. State and local officials reached an agreement with the seven remaining residents on October 29, 2013, allowing them to live out their lives there, after which the rights to their houses will be taken through eminent domain.
The Centralia mine fire is a coal-seam fire that has been burning underneath the borough of Centralia, Pennsylvania, United States, since at least May 27, 1962. The fire is suspected to be from deliberate burning of trash in a former strip mine, igniting a coal seam.
The fire is burning in underground coal mines at depths of up to 300 feet (90 m) over an 8-mile (13 km) stretch of 3,700 acres (15 km2). At its current rate, it could continue to burn for over 250 years.
The fire caused most of the town to be abandoned. The population dwindled from around 1,400 at the time the fire started to 10 in 2017, and most of the buildings have been levelled.

Exploring the Abandoned Graffiti Highway and Ghost Town of Centralia, Pennsylvania
Visiting the all but abandoned town of Centralia, Pennsylvania was a pretty awesome experience. One I recommend to anyone who wants to immerse their-self into what a Post Apocalyptic Setting might look like....
The coal mine located under the town was accidentally set on fire back in 1962 and has been burning ever since. It’s estimated that it will burn for at least another 300 years. 30 years later, in 1992 the state declared eminent domain which began to force most of the residents out of town.
As of our October 5th 2019 visit to the Ghost Town, 5 people remain residents on paper... somewhere... but I'm pretty sure no one really lives there at all anymore.

Abandoned Route 61 Graffiti Highway Centralia, Pennsylvania 1/16/2016
This is a video I put together of my visit to Route 61 Graffiti Highway in Centralia, Pennsylvania on 1/16/16. A piece of Route 61 just south of the town had to be closed in the early 1990's. The mine fire in Centralia Pennsylvania posed a real threat to the structural integrity of it. Subsidence was leading to uneven surfaces and steam poured out through cracks in the asphalt.
PennDOT bypassed this section of Route 61 with an improved portion of Byrnesville Road. After it was upgraded, the bypass adopted the name Route 61, and the old section of the road was left to the elements. The Graffiti Highway is another piece of mine fire’s legacy that makes the town of Centralia Pennsylvania such an interesting place to visit.

Centralia's Graffiti Highway
Tourist attraction in Conyngham Township, Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania Route 61 (PA 61) is an 81.8-mile-long (131.6 km) state highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The route is signed on a north–south direction, from U.S. Route 222 Business (US 222 Bus.) in Reading to US 11 and US 15 in Shamokin Dam. PA 61 meets up with PA 54 in Ashland and these highways split just outside Ashland. PA 54 goes to the south of Mount Carmel and PA 61 heads towards Centralia.
Graffiti Highway Rt 61 Centralia PA
00975 Graffiti Highway Rt 61 Centralia PA - This approx mile long section of PA Route 61 was closed due to the roadway subsiding because of the underground coal mine fire. It's now like a tourist attraction because of the lure to Centralia of visitors from all over. It's not uncommon to see cars parked in the area from New York, New Jersey, Maryland, etc. it's a neat place to visit if you get a chance.

Revisiting Graffiti Highway & the town of Centralia, Pa
A little re-visit back to Centralia, Pa. yesterday. Was here about 4 years ago and decided to go and visit this once thriving coal mining town one more time. There is steam still rising from fissures in the ground today and will be for hundreds of years to come. As always, happy exploring ????
This Abandoned Pennsylvania Town Has Been On Fire For over 53 Years and it could burn for another 250 years.
This now abandoned town is the story that inspired the creators of the Silent Hill series of video games and movies.
Signs warn visitors to the dangers of death by asphyxiation or being swallowed by the ground, but the old mining town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, was once home to more than 1,000 people.
Now it’s nothing more than a smoldering ghost town that’s been burning for half a century.
It started with a fire intentionally set to burn out a landfill before Labor Day in 1962 but the problem was that the landfill was also an old strip-mine pit connected to a maze of abandoned underground mining tunnels full of coal.
Over the decades, the ground has opened up with sulfurous gases sometimes billowing out ― the road along Highway 61 swells and cracks open, riddled with graffiti (referred to now as graffiti highway) and hot to the touch. In the winter, snow melts in patches where the ground is warm.

Exploring With The Boys - Centralia Pennsylvania and Graffiti Highway
Centralia PA is an abandoned coal mining town in Pennsylvania. The town was abandoned because of an underground mine fire, which was reported on May 27th, 1962. The town is almost entirely empty, other than a church and the three remaining residents who live there. As you can see throughout the video we did our best to stay away from the residents of Centrilia as to not disturb them.
Graffiti Highway is so surreal, and the camera doesn't do it the justice it deserves. If you're interested at all in Graffiti Highway I can assure you it's worth a trip.
I absolutely implore you to visit here at least once before the state of Pennsylvania reclaims the land(once all the remaining residents pass they certainly will). The only thing to keep in mind when visiting is to respect the privacy of those still living here.
I had a ton of fun recording this video and I hope to do more of these as soon as possible! We don't usually all get the privilege of having off the same day as one another but when we do we try to get out and do something different. If I think it's worth recording then expect a video on it!
Thanks everyone for watching, I hope you enjoyed the video and if you did please drop a like and leave a sub. If you've got any constructive criticism for me please leave it in the comments section below, I'm always looking to learn and improve!
