Marilyn Adams Genealogical Research Centre
Produced by History Lives Here series 2013. The Marilyn Adams Genealogical Research Centre (MAGRC) is the home of various assets of the 7th Town Historical Society.
Gladys Marilyn Adams U.E. was born 3 August 1934 and died 29 May 1990. She was the 4th great granddaughter of John Weese U.E., the first permanent settler of the Township of Ameliasburgh, and perhaps also of Prince Edward County. Marilyn was educated in Rednersville & Belleville; she then attended Peterborough Teachers’ College. Her 35 year teaching career was spent at several schools in Oshawa. During this time she earned her BA from Queen’s University, Kingston. Following Marilyn’s retirement in 1989, she became active with 7th Town Historical Society, Ameliasburgh. Although her volunteer time was short, through her philanthropy she had a profound influence on the future direction of the Society. When Marilyn died in May of 1990, she left her estate to 7th Town Historical Society to create a genealogical research centre, now known as the Marilyn Adams Genealogical Research Centre.

Abandoned Children's Regional Psychiatric Centre | Urban Exploration Videos with Freaktography
This video is from an Abandoned/Closed Childrens Regional Centre for children and youth.
The centre serves families who live in Ontario Canada,
Counselling and treatment programs here were geared to help children and youth up to 21 years of age who suffered from the following difficulties:
- developmental
- emotional
- behavioural
- psychological
- psychiatric.
The province announced in 2012 that the 400 children and youth who are in day programs at the facility — which treats clients with complex mental health, behavioural and developmental challenges will be transferred to community-based agencies.
The 15 individuals who lived there at closing would also have to leave and the province has promised to “work with families’’ to provide “individualized transition plans.’’
This hospital consists of three wings with an H-shaped footprint. It has a flat roof and is faced in brown brick. The main north side is symmetrical and formal in appearance.
The first and second storeys have tall, paired, flat-topped, sash windows with transoms that run across the facade.
In the third storey are smaller sash windows in triads. All windows have pared-down classical decoration. A stone course connects the first floor window sills and a heavier stone course connects the third floor sills.
A heavy projecting cornice runs immediately above the third storey windows. All of these elements serve to emphasize the horizontal, thereby streamlining the building’s appearance.
This hospital was described as a “Palace of Sunshine”, custom-designed for children requiring helio (sun) therapy or hospitalization for long periods, e.g. while recovering from rheumatic fever, osteomyelitis, polio or surgery.
The building accommodated 112 patients in rooms with 6 to 8 cots that could all be wheeled outside in nice weather. At that time, sun and fresh air were considered necessary treatments for certain ailments. Because a natural environment was considered healthful for their patients, 50,000 tree seedlings and extensive gardens were planted on the grounds.
The site was self sufficient, with its own steam plant, water filtration system and sewage disposal system. A bus was purchased for $3,300 to connect the hospital to the nearest transportation lines and help make this “remote” location more attractive to staff.
With medical advances, including vaccinations, antibiotics and surgical techniques, the need for this type of hospital diminished over time. By the 1940s, it was being used primarily for polio cases. After a major power failure in 1954 during Hurricane Hazel when 17 babies in incubators had to be evacuated, the decision was made to close the facility.
In 1957, the property was sold to the Ontario Government to become a Hospita for children - the first residential mental health centre for children and youths in Ontario.
The facility could accommodate 72 children, aged six to seventeen. Few staff members had experience working with emotionally disturbed children, and by the time the hospital opened in January 1958, the new staff had received little training.
In addition, the target population had not been well-defined, and the first group included those with schizophrenia, brain damage, deafness, and developmental delays.
This first cohort of children literally destroyed the place by breaking windows and burning mattresses. Workers were attacked. Staff largely learned as they went, and after a period of major adjustment, order was brought to the facility and an era of effective treatment began.
In the 1960s, a new insight in child psychiatry was the revelation that experiencing a positive group living situation - even with people to whom a child was not related - could be healing to a child who previously had never lived in a “normal” family environment.
In 1972, the province constructed ten small houses on the property, and moved many of the children out of a “hospital” setting into these cottages where they could experience living in family-style groups. These cottages are still used today and are located south and west of the main building.

Group must pony up $6 million to save Terrace Theatre
The same judge that denied a temporary restraining order, paving the way for demolition of Robbinsdale's Terrace Theatre is now allowing a slight delay of the teardown work. However, the group trying to save the theater, Friends of the Terrace LLC, must come up with $6.3 million in bond requests by 4:30 p.m. Friday to prevent demolition.
The ruling by Hennepin County Judge Michael Browne came down at 11:52 p.m. Monday. While it gives more time for an appeal process to go forward, Friends of the Terrace must decide what to do next.
Judge Browne granted two requests for bond money. One is a $2.8 million bond request by the property owner, New York-based Brixmor Property Group, which is money Brixmor says it would lose if its deal to sell the property fell through.
A $3.5 million bond was also granted for the Robbinsdale Economic Development Authority. That amount is what the city says it would lose in tax revenue if development plans fall through.
Friends of the Terrace has to come up with 100 percent of the bond monies by 4:30 p.m. Friday. If it doesn't come up with the money, Brixmor can proceed with tearing down the Terrace Theatre.
Demolition crews working for Brixmor Property Group started knocking down the Terrace Theatre Saturday. But five minutes after work began, Judge Ivy Bernhardson signed papers to stop work, giving Friends of the Terrace a temporary reprieve, leading to Judge Browne's ruling Monday night. Friends of the Terrace has also filed an appeal with the Minnesota Court of Appeals to prevent demolition, but a hearing isn't scheduled until Oct. 10.
St.Louis Park-based Inland Development Partners wants to buy the Terrace Theatre site from Brixmor Property Group. Inland is pursuing plans to tear down the Terrace Theatre and part of the adjacent Terrace Mall where a shuttered Rainbow Foods sits to make way for a Hy-Vee grocery store. When asked whether Hy-Vee would still build on the site, Inland would not say.
Our intent right now is to make that site ready for redevelopment, clearing blighted properties from it, preparing it the land itself to be redeveloped into a sight that's useful in serving Robbinsdale for many decades to come, said Inland Development Partners spokesperson Ted Davis.

A Day As A Cadet
Sometimes when you throw a young person in with the sharks they come out not only holding their own but surprising the 'teacher' who chucked them in. That is the case with this new video by our Padawan Tiffany Scott, who far exceeded the expectations of her teacher, Five Points Media Producer, John Ironside.
This is not Tiffany's first solo venture since joining our team, but it is the first that she did entirely on her own. In her other video, about foster dog Nikki looking for a home, the young documentary producer in training was accompanied by her teacher and left more or less to her own devices with guidance. In this situation, she was dropped off at Camp Blackdown, CFB Borden and asked to call for her ride home when she was done. She shot every frame, and she cut this together all on her own, with only minor training in colour correction which takes anyone a while to understand.
We think the 23-year-old did a great job. If you think likewise, please make a comment to encourage her future work.
Thank you to Blackdown Cadets, the officers, personnel, instructors, and support staff who helped Tiffany to make this very good short video about the benefits and training of the Canadian Armed Forces Cadets Canada.

1994 PHILADELPHIA & CANADIAN YOUTH AT A RESTAURANT - O Holy Night - SAT JAN 1 1994 - OSHAWA CANADA
O HOLY NIGHT - REMEMBERING MEMORABLE UB YOUTH GROUP VISITS - On Friday December 31, 1993, two extended white vans filled with 17 young adults from the Philadelphia UBC left Philadelphia, PA and arrived 8+ hours later in Whitby, Ontario early in the morning on New Year's Day, Saturday January 1, 1994 and spent the next 1 & 1/2 days at Peter & Nadia's new home.
This group was joined by 10 Canadians and another American from MN and the day was filled with activities at a nearby church playing basketball, floor hockey and volleyball. This group of 28 people then enjoyed a beautiful New Year's Day dinner at a nearby restaurant that was reserved just for this special group.
While waiting for their dinner, this special group sang two songs - SILENT NIGHT and O HOLY NIGHT. This video features O HOLY NIGHT and also includes a special Merry Christmas and Happy New Year greeting at the end of the video.
Eight years earlier in November 1985, a similar visit occurred by the UB Youth of the two Philadelphia UB churches who visited the Toronto UBC for a special weekend connecting the Youth Groups of the Philadelphia and Toronto Ukrainian Baptist Churches and many of their friends resulting in many great memories and lasting friendships for 35 years.
After OCELA July 1984 while starting to work with the Toronto UB Youth, Youth Director Peter Tymciw organized many Toronto UB Youth trips to the USA in his newly purchased used 1978 Ford E150 Econoline blue van visiting UB Churches and Youth in Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Chicago and also trips to the Trenton NJ, Crum Lynne PA and Vineland NJ UB churches. These trips were the result of new friendships that were made each year at OCELA starting in July 1984 and each year following.
For many of these UB Youth, it was their first time crossing the USA/Canadian border and also visiting these great cities for the first time, providing memorable scenic tourist trips in addition to singing as a Youth Group in many of these churches.
In this video and others to follow, the piano in this dimly lit restaurant is played by the talented Sheldon Wong, who started visiting OCELA for many years in the early 1990s, playing piano for the OCELA Youth Choir, also leading it one year, and played piano for the Men's Quartet he was part of and other musical numbers and also played piano for special church services held at the Toronto UBC in 1996 and at its 50th Anniversary Celebration Service on Saturday June 3, 2000.

03 The Canning Industry
In the early 1880s, a new industry quickly took root in Prince Edward County, the canning of fruits and vegetables. Within a decade, canned produce from this tiny Ontario place was shipped all over the world earning the area its title as The Garden County of Canada. But by the 1970s, increasing competition from other regions in Canada, imported produce, and new regulations forced local canners to close their plants.
