Gruodžio 18 d. Vytauto Didžiojo universitete (VDU) buvo atidarytas akad. Andrejaus Sacharovo demokratijos plėtros tyrimų centras, kuriame ypatingas dėmesys bus skiriamas žmogaus ir pilietinių teisių problematikai, Rytų Centrinės Europos valstybių politikos studijoms ir tyrimams. Iškilmingo atidarymo proga centre buvo surengta diskusija, kurioje dalyvavo JAV, D. Britanijos, Rusijos, Lietuvos ir kitų šalių nevyriausybinių organizacijų atstovai, analitikai, intelektualai.

On 18 December, in Kaunas, Lithuania, Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) hosted the grand opening of its new subdivision, Andrei Sakharov Research Centre for Democratic Development. Focusing on issues of human and civil rights, the centre will conduct research into the politics in Central and Eastern European countries analysing whether they fulfil their international commitments to protect human and civil rights.
A discussion was held during the event by Sakharov's daughter, researcher Tatiana Yankelevich from the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University (USA), political scientist and analyst Lilia Shevtsova from the Chatham House (UK), founders of the Moscow School of Civic Education Lena Nemirovskaya and Yury Senokosov (Russia), Co-Director of the Institute for Statecraft Chris Donnelly (UK), Senior Russia Analyst at Radio Free Europe Brian Whitmore (Czech Republic), Project Director of Freedom House Lithuania Vytis Jurkonis, Director of European Security Programme, Vilnius Institute for Policy Analysis Simas Čelutka, and VMU representatives.

Vilnius (Lithuanian pronunciation: [ˈvʲɪlʲnʲʊs] ( ); see also other names) is the capital of Lithuania, and its largest city, with a population of 539,939 (806,308 together with Vilnius County) as of 2014. Vilnius is located in the southeast part of Lithuania and is the second biggest city of the Baltic states.
Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius city municipality and of the Vilnius district municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County. The first known written record of Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital is known from Gediminas' letters in 1323.

May 24, 2019 | For more than 450 years the Society of Jesus has embodied a global mission. From St. Francis Xavier through Pope Francis, Jesuits have traveled to the ends of the earth, seeking to spread the Gospel and advance intercultural and interreligious dialogue in the service of global humanity.
To celebrate the centennial of the Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS), Georgetown University hosted a conference in Rome on the past and future of Jesuit global engagement. As the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States, located in Washington, D.C., and open to students of all nations, cultures, and religions, Georgetown has always had a strong international orientation. The establishment of SFS in 1919 as the first school of international studies in the country marked an historic milestone. Through the vision and leadership of its founder, Fr. Edmund J. Walsh, S.J. (1885-1956), SFS developed the global horizon of the Society of Jesus in a new direction—the training of new generations of leaders in government, business, and civil society to grapple with the world’s most pressing challenges.

Lithuanian authorities investigate homophobia in one of the country’s school’s religious classes after schoolgirl shared slides with radical statements that triggered an uproar in social media on Thursday.
The information in the slides shows a communist insignia in LGBT flag and alleges that rape, sadomasochism and cannibalism are highly prevalent among homosexuals.
‘Part of gays practice torture seeking sexual pleasure’; ‘up to 40 percent of child abuse is connected with homosexuality’; ‘almost all serial killers who ate their victims were gays’, claimed the slides.
‘The most disappointing thing for me was that such material is taught in the school, it is unclear on what it is based, looks like fake facts’, said Indre Fabijonaviciute who shared photos of the slides on her Facebook.
The teacher who used slides with radical statements about homosexuality said she took the information from leaflets provided by Colorado based Family Research Institute in the United States. The institute is led by controversial anti-gay psychologist Paul Cameron and is labelled by US civil rights Southern Poverty Law Center as anti-gay hate group because of discredited research and claims about LGBT people.
‘I just thought that it was useful to share, but I did not use this information to turn against that movement and against people of that orientation’, said teacher Loreta Raudyte.
In a strongly influenced by Catholic Church Lithuania pupils can choose between Religious and Ethics classes. Headmaster of the school said he did not receive any complaints about religious classes before, but agreed that the teacher chose inadequate material.
Minister of Education argued that the teacher can no longer work in the school and the administration itself is responsible for the scandal.
‘School administration and council, as well as community must act that things like that could not reach neither hears of the pupils nor their eyes’, said minister Jurgita Petrauskiene.
Lithuanian Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson started investigation. Prosecutors said they are also interested in the incident and could fine the school.
Lithuania is criticized internationally on its stance against homosexuality after the country enacted a law of Protection of Minors in 2010 banning the ‘promotion of homosexual relations’. The law is criticized by Amnesty International as violating freedom of self-expression of LGBT people.

Cameron’s statistics and it was only generalization, you can find more statistics here. These are not made up facts, it is truth that I could found. (Reporter says that some slides are really too radical) I agree that it was radical, I was shocked myself by what I read. Of course you can decide not to tell pupils, but if you teach a topic like that, you should not hide what teacher knows. I just thought that it was useful to share, but I did not use this information to turn against that movement and against people of that orientation.

2014 Templeton Freedom Award Finalists & Winner
The top change agents strengthening the worldwide freedom movement were named finalists for Atlas Network’s 2014 Templeton Freedom Award. Awarded since 2004, the Templeton Freedom Award is named for the late investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton. The award annually honors his legacy by identifying and recognizing the most exceptional and innovative contributions to the understanding of free enterprise, and the public policies that encourage prosperity, innovation and human fulfillment via free competition.
The Templeton Freedom Award is generously supported by Templeton Religion Trust was presented during Atlas Network’s Liberty Forum and Freedom Dinner 2014. The winning organization, Lithuanian Free Market Institute received a $100,000 prize and the runners-up received $5,000.

The Uncover ObamaCare initiative resulted in 24 states saying no to ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion. The initiative has kept 9.4 million Americans from becoming dependent on government and will save taxpayers almost $500 billion over the next decade.
FINALIST: Civismo (Madrid, Spain) - Low Taxes Campaign for Spain
This campaign to lower taxes and promote economic freedom all throughout Spain paved the way to significant tax reform. One component of the reform package is that the average income earner will save about 600 euros (US$777) per year.
FINALIST: Illinois Policy Institute (Illinois, USA) - Campaign to stop an unfair progressive income tax
The campaign led to the defeat of a movement to amend the Illinois Constitution and replace the state’s flat income tax with a progressive rate structure. This victory means that over the next five years alone, nearly $30 billion dollars will stay in the hands of Illinois’ families and businesses instead of going to politicians in Springfield.
FINALIST: Goldwater Institute (Arizona, USA) - Education Savings Accounts initiative
Unlike school vouchers, education savings accounts create the maximum possible choice for parents and opportunities for competition among government schools, private schools, and other education providers. Arizona became the first state to launch education savings accounts in mid-2011. And in 2014 Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed into law the country’s second education savings account program.
WINNER: Lithuanian Free Market Institute (Vilnius, Lithuania) - Municipal Performance Index for Freedom and Free Enterprise
Launched in 2011, the index measures and ranks the performance of municipal governments in three overarching categories: municipalities for citizens, municipalities for investors, and municipal governance and administration. The methodology of the index comprised 55 indicators and anchored the evaluation criteria in the underlying values of freedom of choice, private ownership and initiative, free enterprise, efficient use of public resources, and transparent and accountable governance.
