OCTV #56: TORONTO FILM COMISSIONER, ZAIB SHAIKH
On May 29, 2014 the City of Toronto announced the appointment of Zaib Shaikh as Toronto's new Film Commissioner and Director of Entertainment Industries. Born and raised in Toronto, Shaikh is a well-known actor, writer, director and producer. He is probably best known for his starring role as Imam Amaar Rashid on CBC's international hit comedy Little Mosque on the Prairie.
Recently, he also played the role of Nadir Khan in Oscar-nominated director Deepa Mehta’s latest film, Midnight’s Children, adapted from the novel by Salman Rushdie. For television, Shaikh co-produced the special Long Story Short: CBC Turns 75, hosted by Martin Short. Shaikh also co-wrote, directed and co-produced the Gemini Award winning Television film, Othello, the Tragedy of the Moor.
Shaikh is also the founder of the production company, Governor Films. Having begun his career in theatre, Shaikh has had the pleasure of working with some of the largest theatre companies in Canada including Canadian Stage, National Arts Centre, Globe Theatre, Grand Theatre and the Stratford Festival of Canada. Shaikh co-founded and served as an Artistic Producer for the Whistler Theatre Festival WTP in BC, was one of the Producers for the Gemini Award nominated Little Mosque on the Prairie and received a Leo Award for his performance as Imam Amaar Rashid.
He has also served on juries and committees for the Gemini Awards, ACTRA Awards, Ontario Arts Council and Theatre Ontario Youth Theatre Program. Currently, Shaikh is a board member for the Canadian Centre for Diversity and the Institute for Canadian Citizenship. He also serves as an ambassador of CAMH and Amnesty International in Canada.
Most recently having delivered a keynote address at Harvard’s 375th Anniversary, he has also travelled across Canada and the world speaking on the power of arts and the media as a platform to greater understanding between Eastern and Western culture.
I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and chat with Zaib just before he was honored at ANOKHI's 12th Anniversary celebrations where he received the 'Crusader Of The Year' award and was also included in ANOKHI's first-time commemorative coffee table book. Hear Zaib speak to me about his passion to be a part of the arts scene in Canada, and the diverse characters he has played on the small and big screen.
Enjoy!

THE TLC THRIFT SHOP.
The TLC Community Thrift Shop and Training Centre: The Healthy Environmental Alternative
The TLC Thrift Shop and Training Centre is located in the community of Chetwynd in northeast BC in the Peace River Valley. I
Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has. The TLC is such a group of thoughtful committed people.
They serve a population of about 3,100 within the town site of Chetwynd and a trading area of about 7,000 people in an area known as Area E of the Peace River Regional District.
It is the only agency in the community which accepts donated goods and refreshes, recycles and makes used clothing, books and household goods available to the public for resale or to be given to schools or persons needing help.
Chetwynd is too isolated and fuel costs are too high for the export of our used clothing, shoes and household wares to other spots. Shipping of goods to Prince George, Dawson Creek and Grande Prairie are too prohibitive and stopped in the early 1980s.
The TLC is a stand alone independent society and is known to assist in the event of flood, fire and poverty without question or hesitation. It is a non-profit society and a registered Canadian charity.
Staff members and volunteers sort, wash, re-sell or donate over 100 metric tonne of items donated items including clothing, books, house wares and furniture each year and keep these items from the landfill.
Family members, both men and women, are our central shoppers, but visiting workers from camps and tourists also frequent the TLC.
Our goal in 2015 is to build a new sewing centre in the TLC Community Thrift Shop so as to mend more clothes by training our young volunteers and staff to use commercial sewing machines.
The BC Hydro Grant of $10,000 will go towards re-using thousands of kilos of clothing items and preventing these items from entering the landfill.
The TLC will reduce the amount of fuel used transporting the items to the landfill.
The TLC will reduce fuel costs of burying the items
The TLC will reduce the costs of expanding and building new landfills
The TLC will reduce the amount of toxins including methane created by textile waste from rotting and seeping in the landfill and entering our environment.
In total, the TLC plans on reducing the volume of goods to the landfill by at least 29 truckloads per year. This will increase the life of the present landfill and save t5ucking costs to the landfill and equipment, fuel, hourly labor rates, water monitoring and transaction software costs at the landfill. This project will result in about $48,000 savings per year by diverting clothes from the landfill.
Overall, the committed staff and volunteers of the TLC Thrift Shop and Training Centre will help to reduce the size of the environmental footprint in the Peace.
Families and workers in the community will have more goods to use, to recycle and our small group of thoughtful, committed people will have been instrumental in changing our small corner of the Peace River Valley and BC Hydro will be able to join the ranks of helping the Peace recycle, reuse and rescue items from the landfill.

Duff Crerar was raised in Eastern Ontario, studied at the Universities of Western Ontario and Queens, Kingston, in Canada. He is an author, writing on Canadian military and religious history, specializing in Military Chaplaincy.
