NICOSIA OLD CITY
With its 5000 yearlong history, walking is the ideal way to get a feel for the character, history and continual cultural development of Lefkosia (Nicosia). Despite its historical difficulties, Nicosia is still the heart of Cyprus. This can be seen through the ongoing efforts to revitalize the old city, especially through the Nicosia Master Plan, executed under the auspices of the United Nations. Walking through Laiki Geitonia, you will see some remarkable examples of traditional urban architecture, such as the Leventis Municipal Museum and small art workshops. Visit Trypiotis Church (1695), the Museum of the History of Cypriot Coinage, and The Museum of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection of the Bank of Cyprus. Phaneromeni Church is the biggest church in the walled city, and right across is the Cross of Missirikos, a medieval church with gothic Italian elements that was converted into Araplar Mosque in 1571.
At the heart of the inner wall city is the Omerie Area with the Omerie Mosque (once a 14th century Medieval Church dedicated to St. Mary of the Augustines), and the restored Turkish Baths, which won a EUROPA NOSTRA prize. An archaeological site with finds from the Byzantine and Medieval times lies next to the Municipal Arts Centre and the old inns. The 13th century church / 16th century Latin Cathedral of Agia Sofia, and the Selimiye Mosque, can be seen from a distance between the Green line and Turkish-occupied Nicosia.
In Chrysaliniotissa neighbourhood, the renovated houses are once again inhabited after lying derelict following the Turkish invasion of 1974. The most important building is the 18th century Archontiko Odou Axiotheas, which is now used by the University of Cyprus as a Cultural Centre. The 10th century Church of Chrysaliniotssa is next, followed by the Multi-Crafts Centre, which makes and sells contemporary handicrafts. At Ermou Street, you can visit the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) with over 1000 paintings by visitors to Cyprus in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The dead-end of Ermou Street is part of the Green Line (buffer zone), which is controlled by the UN. The religious and cultural centre of the city is Archbishop Kyprianos Square with the Cathedral of St. John, the Folk Art Museum and the Cultural Foundation of Archbishop Makarios the III with its Byzantine Museum. The Folk Art Museum, the Pan Cyprian Gymnasium Museums, and the Museum of National Struggle, offer another aspect of Cypriot culture and history.
From Famagusta Gate Cultural Centre, take a walk on top of the 16th century Venetian walls to see the moat and the modern city outside the walls. At Podocatoro Bastion you will see the Statue of Liberty, representing the Cypriot struggle against British rule (1955-1959). At the neighbourhood of Agios Antonios, visit the Mansion House of the Dragoman, Hadjigeorgakis Cornesios (18th century), which now houses the ethnological museum of the city.
An open-air market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday at Constanza Bastion, next to Bayraktar Mosque. The commercial streets of Onasagoras and Ledra offer shops, restaurants, cafeterias and ice cream kiosks, whilst the Ledra Observatory Museum on the 11th floor of the Shacolas Tower building (in Ledra Street), offers an unobstructed view of the entire city.

Rita Severis - Travelling Artists in Cyprus 1700s to 1960 - London Event
Travelling Artists in Cyprus from the 1700s to 1960, presented by Rita Severis, as co-founder of the Cyprus Visual Arts Research Foundation (CVAR) collections.
Event on Friday 2 October at the Hellenic Centre in London, presented by Rita Severis, in English, who together with her husband Costas, a very well-known philanthropist, have established their Foundation in the heart of the old section of Nicosia.
Costas and Rita Severis Foundation
In 2014, the Foundation opened the Centre of Visual Arts & Research (CVAR) on Ermou Street in the heart of the walled city of Nicosia. CVAR hosts the Costas & Rita Severis collections, which comprise more than 1.500 works of art by artists travelling to Cyprus during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, hundreds of Cypriot memorabilia (including from Government House), dozens of Cypriot costumes from the 18th to the 20th centuries, and more than 6.000 books on the history, art and culture of Cyprus and its neighbours. CVAR also contains a research centre as well as a café, restaurant and roof garden where it screens films and slide shows, and organises a wide range of activities to promote understanding.

Public Lecture at The Hellenic Centre, 16-18 Paddington Street, London W1U 5AS
October 02, 2015
During the eighteenth, and most of the nineteenth century, the only testimonies we have of how Cyprus looked like are the works of artists who travelled to the island. Dr Rita Severis, Executive Director of Costas & Rita Severis Foundation which since 2014 hosts the Centre of Visual Arts & Research (CVAR), delivers a lecture on how these art works unfold a panorama of the island which includes the monuments, landscape, flora, architecture and everyday life of the people. While examining their art and comparing views out of three centuries, one can also follow the developments that took place and the changes that occurred. These paintings speak of the history of Cyprus and its people and remain a strong testimony of our cultural heritage.
Event organised in conjunction with the Cyprus Tourist Organisation.

Happy Celtic New Year!
We focused all October on reclaiming your past: your heritage, history, art form, even wisdom from your younger self.
It’s a lot!
How can you now corral all this rich material to enhance your creativity?
Seeing Patterns & Setting Intentions with your Artistic Diary
Seeing patterns is one of creativity’s great secrets.
Patterns are at the heart of music, fine art, dance, philosophy, sacred geometry, and more.
Discerning patterns helps your creativity focus and flourish in the real world.
This is inspiration!
And from those patterns, you can set intentions.
Intentions are really Goals - Goals that come from your heart.
The best kind!
Being Celtic New Year, it’s a marvelous time for visioning and setting your next creative Goals.
How your Artistic Diary helps bring out your patterns + intentions.
PS Here is the additional video I mention, showing you how to create your Artistic Diary:

CVAR: Clerides Exhibition Inauguration & First Year Anniversary
The Glafcos Clerides Personal Collections exhibition at CVAR was inaugurated by Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci on Mon 7 Sep 2015.
On the same evening, the Centre of Visual Arts & Research celebrated its first year anniversary.
Press Release re: Glafcos Clerides Personal Collections:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Costas & Rita Severis Foundation and Ms Kate Clerides announce the donation to the Centre of Visual Arts & Research (CVAR) of the Glafcos Clerides library, his decorations and other memorabilia pertaining to his service during World War II, a large and important audiovisual archive as well as his collection of old maps of Cyprus.
The above material will be housed on the third floor of the Research Centre which will be named Glafcos Clerides Room, as well as in other exhibition rooms of the Centre.
During the signing ceremony on 14 July 2015, Ms Kate Clerides stressed that the objectives and goals of CVAR coincide with the vision and values of Glafcos Clerides.
Costas Severis, Chairman of the Costas & Rita Severis Foundation, considered it a great honour for CVAR to accept the donation, especially as the goals of the Foundation, namely the pursuit of research and study of the culture of Cyprus and the reconciliation and peaceful coexistence between all communities on the island, are values that Glafcos Clerides pursued in his long political career.
