An abandoned skyscraper in Caracas has become a shelter for many people with nowhere else to go. In less than 20 years, its residents created a fully-functioning ‘state inside the state’, with its own infrastructure, taxes and even an elected president. Despite the difficult living conditions, those moving out into proper apartments are nevertheless nostalgic about their experience of living in the 45-storey skyscraper.

Homeland: inside the real Tower of David in Venezuela

The TV series Homeland sees Sergeant Nicholas Brody detained within an unfinished tower block in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas. Alasdair Baverstock takes a look inside the real building, the Tower of David.

Shaven-headed and punctured by gunshots, episode three of Homeland saw Sergeant Nicholas Brody detained within an unfinished tower block in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.

While it may have looked as if the concrete, prison-like monstrosity was all CGI graphics and complicated sets, in fact the scenes were shot inside the Tower of David, home to thousands of squatters.

Looking up at the building that rises from the heart of the violent city, you can see the missing walls where Homeland's Brody peered out of during the episode.

When construction began on The Tower in 1990, it was originally supposed to be a show-piece to the world.

But after the main investor died, and the economy was hit by a financial crisis, the building was never finished.

Gangs and civilian squatters soon moved in and claimed the building as their own.

The Tower of David is far from complete, it's only stairs, no lifts. It's 45 storeys high and there are people on 28 of those floors.

For the people high up, the stairs are the only way home at night.

Along the dimly lit corridors, the concrete bricks and unpainted walls, the Tower of David now houses families, schoolrooms and shops.

Children can be seen running about and playing football on the grey, hard floor of the abandoned building site.

Although it came off as extremely dangerous in this week's episode of Homeland, violence here in the real Tower of David is pretty rare.

This tower is home to 3,000 residents and each is expected to do his or her part for the community.

Despite being poor squatters, up on the roof of the building where we saw Brody being taunted by his holders, the residents have access to a view that people would pay millions for.

Today, life in what is now known as the world's tallest slum, is a far cry from the brutality Brody witnesses in Homeland, although the fetted stairwells and shattered windows tell of the skyscraper's darker past.

Caracas is the capital and largest city of Venezuela. Caracas is a fascinating city to explore, replete with excellent art, food and a bustling nightlife. The city grew slowly until the 1940s. In Caracas, the tallest skyscrapers are: Parque Central Towers, Banco Mercantil Building, BBVA Provincial Tower and The Twin Towers of El Recreo Shopping Mall in Sabana Grande district. Unfortunately, Business Center Confinanzas was not completed. If so, it would be the second tallest skyscraper of the city. Most of the tallest buildings in Caracas are located in La Candelaria and El Conde/Parque Central.

The people of Caracas are usually quite hospitable and friendly. Caracas is a city of contrasts. El Rosal and Las Mercedes are the most exclusive districts of the city at present. The boulevard of Sabana Grande is the main commercial corridor of the city and is visited by more than 500 thousand people every day. Plaza Bolívar, Plaza El Venezolano and Plaza Diego Ibarra are the most emblematic of the historic center.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Caracas was a small city that reached La Candelaria. Later, the towns of Sabana Grande, Chacao, Las Mercedes and Petare would grow rapidly and be urbanized. Most of the architectural heritage of Caracas was built in the twentieth century. The Towers of Parque Central Complex, even though they no longer hold the title of the tallest skyscrapers in Latin America, remain the tallest twin towers in the region. Sabana Grande was the favorite place of Juan Domingo Perón during his golden exile in Venezuela, when he lived in the El Rosal and El Bosque neighborhoods.

The middle class is mainly concentrated in the east of the city (El Recreo de Libertador, Chacao, Baruta, Sucre and El Hatillo), but San Bernardino, La Candelaria, San Pedro and El Paraiso are also important centers of the middle class. The historic center of the city is Plaza Bolívar, the grid has been modified though. The most luxurious urbanization, Caracas Country Club, is located between Parroquia El Recreo of the Libertador Municipality and the Chacao Municipality of the Miranda State. Valle Arriba Country Club and La Lagunita Country Club are as luxurious as Caracas Country Club, however. The Embassy of the United States of America is located in Valle Arriba Country Club, which has one of the most spectacular views of the city at its Mirador Valle Arriba. The geographical center of the Metropolitan District of Caracas has been set at Sabana Grande, considered the Eastern Gate of Caracas. The district of Sabana Grande is the one with the best coverage by the Caracas Metro, but the center of Caracas, Chacao, El Rosal, El Bosque and Altamira are also easily accessible. Most of the embassies are located in the Chacao and Baruta municipalities. However, some have a limited presence in El Recreo. The most important business center nowadays is El Rosal.

Venezuela: Torre de David en Caracas se inclinó tras el sismo

El Ministro de Interior y Justicia de Venezuela, Néstor Reverol, informó que el sismo registrado el pasado martes en la nación suramericana tuvo una magnitud de 6.9, con epicentro a 19 kilómetros al sureste de Yaguaraparo, en el estado sucre, con una profundidad de 31.6 kilómetros. Reverol aseguró que no se registraron pérdidas humana ni heridos a causa del movimiento telúrico, aunque sí se registraron daños materiales, como es el caso de la Torre de David, en Caracas, edificio que registró una inclinación del 25% en sus últimos cinco pisos. teleSUR

Mitten im Geschäftszentrum von Venezuelas Metropole Caracas halten 750 Familien aus den Slums einen nie vollendeten Wolkenkratzer ohne Lift und Fassade besetzt. Die spektakuläre Hausbesetzung fasziniert Architekten, die in diesem dauerhaften Provisorium ein einmaliges Studienobjekt finden. Städteplaner an der ETH Zürich beschäftigen sich mit dem Torre David auf der Suche nach architektonischen Lösungen für die Großstädte der Zukunft.
Der Turm steht mitten im Geschäftszentrum von Caracas. Vor 20 Jahren, in Venezuelas Wirtschaftskrise 1992, stoppten die Bauarbeiten amTorre David. Seit 2007 lebt die Bauruine. Menschen aus den umliegenden Armensiedlungen richteten sich wohnlich ein - illegal, aber geduldet, auch wenn der Turm vielen in der Nachbarschaft unheimlich ist. In diesem Turm leben die Bösen, alles Verbrecher, sagt Anwohner Carlos Julio Rojas. Und wenn man sie anzeigt, sagen die Polizisten: 'Da gehe ich nicht rein, ich bin doch nicht lebensmüde'.
Im Wolkenkratzer selbst zeigt sich ein anderes Bild. Dort lebt eine improvisierte, aber hoch organisierte Gemeinschaft von 750 Familien. Den leerstehenden Raum eroberten sie Stockwerk um Stockwerk: eine gut geordnete Anarchie in bester Lage der Stadt. Diese Wohnung gehört jetzt meiner Frau, meinen Kindern und mir, sagt Bewohner Richard Camacho. Gut, wir haben nichts dafür bezahlt, aber wir waren es doch, die sie bewohnbar gemacht haben. Die Infrastruktur ist beeindruckend: Es gibt Läden, Friseure, Restaurants - ein vertikales Dorf für 3000 Menschen. Es ist die Erfolgsgeschichte der kleinen Leute - dort, wo ein globales Finanzinstitut gescheitert ist. Auch Hugo Chavez ist gescheitert, der zuwenig Wohnraum geschaffen hat. Zumindest duldet er vorläufig, dass sie ihn sich selbst schaffen.

Jetzt ist der Turm international bekannt. Auf der Architekturbiennale 2012 in Venedig sorgen Stadtforscher aus Zürich für Aufsehen mit ihren Studien zum Phänomen Torre David. Unkontrolliert wuchernde Megastädte, so die Botschaft der ETH-Dozenten, sind die große architektonische Herausforderung der Zukunft. Für ihre Arbeit erhielten Alfredo Brillembourg und Hubert Klumpner viel Aufmerksamkeit bei Fachleuten und Publikum. Heutzutage wird der Architekt zum sozialen Unternehmer, so Brillembourg. In den 1990er Jahren drehte sich noch alles um Form, um Äußerlichkeit, Maßgeschneidertes in den wildesten Formen. Im 21. Jahrhundert geht es vor allem darum, eine Katastrophe zu vermeiden.

(Mittlerweile ist der Turm geräumt worden (August 2014) - Ein chinesischer Investor hat den Komplex gekauft.
