Giant Hill Figures in England
video by Robert Nichol music by John Mayfield
A hill figure is a large visual representation created by cutting into a steep hillside and revealing the underlying geology. It is a type of geoglyph usually designed to be seen from afar rather than above. In some cases trenches are dug and rubble made from material brighter than the natural bedrock is placed into them. The new material is often chalk, a soft and white form of limestone, leading to the alternative name of chalk figure for this form of art.
Ancient hill figures cut in grass are especially a phenomenon in England: examples include the Cerne Abbas Giant, the Uffington White Horse, the Long Man of Wilmington, as well as the lost carvings at Cambridge, Oxford and Plymouth Hoe. From the 18th century onwards, many further ones were added.

To those unfamiliar with the remaining rural landscapes of England, images of giant figures depicting man and beast emblazoned onto hillsides might elicit responses such as: Wow, is this real? Upon being informed that such hill figures exist all over Great Britain, some might even suspect the deceptive hand of Photoshop, or simply wonder why: why have people created these figures?
The answers are varied and often obscure, but we'll try to dig up what's behind each figure collected here. The works are created by stripping away the top layer of soil and turf to expose the chalk beneath, which contrasts strikingly with the green grass of the hillside. In some cases, trenches have been dug and material brighter than the bedrock placed inside. Designed to be seen from afar, the images are often discernible from great distances. Though they are frequently thought to date back from ancient times, most can be traced back to the last few centuries.

Giant Cerne Abbas Dorset
The Cerne Abbas Giant is a hill figure near the village of Cerne Abbas in Dorset, England. Made by a turf-cut outline filled with chalk, it depicts a large naked man and is typically described as a giant wielding a club. The figure is listed as a scheduled monument in the United Kingdom and the site where he stands is owned by the National Trust.
The origin and age of the figure are unclear. It is often thought of as an ancient construction, though the earliest mention of it dates to the late 17th century. Early antiquarians associated it, on little evidence, with a Saxon deity, while other scholars sought to identify it with a Celtic British figure of the Roman Hercules or some syncretization of the two. Archaeological evidence that parts of the drawing have been lost over time strengthen the Hercules identification. The lack of earlier descriptions leads modern scholars to conclude that it probably dates from the 17th century, and perhaps originated as political satire.
Regardless of its age, the Cerne Abbas Giant has become an important part of local culture and folklore, which often associates it with fertility. It is one of England's best known hill figures and is a visitor attraction in the region.

Often known as the Rude Man, the Giant of Cerne Abbas is one of the most mysterious chalk sculptures in the country. Depending on who you listen to, 'he', may be genuinely prehistoric, or a mere youth at less than 400years old.
Cerne Abbas Giant 4k - WARNING CONTAINS MANBITS
The flight of the giant male member! Ooh matron. Yes they were certainly well hung back in ancient times and they didnt have felt tip pens back then... they only had chalk hills to do rude grafitti on. Enjoy.

CERNE GIANT GETS MAKE-OVER THANKS TO NATIONAL TRUST
The Cerne Abbas Giant a huge chalk figure carved in a Dorset hillside is having a make-over organised by The National Trust.
Volunteers and parents and children all took part in making this huge creation stand out again from the grass field in which it is.
With time the outlines of it fade as rain and weeds dull its lines and the people have all helped to scrape the lines and replace with fresh crushed chalk.
The carving is world famous and is best known for having its manhood displayed erect.
The penis is 36feet long and the standing man is in total over 180 metres tall.

The Mysterious Cerne Abbas Giant
This video shows the Rude Man of Abbas. That's just Dave of course. Pretending he has muscles !
Seriously though the image is a mystery and it was carved by the use of a series of one foot wide trenches crossing the hillside above the historic village of Cerne Abbas in Dorset UK.It would probably have been laid out by the use of wooden pegs and rope if ancient techniques were followed.
Scientific tests using scanning have shown that there might once have been something draped over the giant's left side, but which was grassed over long ago. This being the Hercules hypothesis.
Actually the arm does look rather out-stretched without purpose. An animal skin draped across would make aesthetic sense.
This carving is one of only two human image ancient hillside figures in the UK, the Long Man of Willmington being the other. The village of Cerne Abbas is eight miles north of Dorchester on the A352 Sherbourne road. The best viewing area is beside the A352
Dave has composed a jovial and lightly mysterious soundtrack to juxtapose the fun and serious sides of this National treasure.
