Giant Cerne Abbas Dorset
The Cerne Abbas Giant is a hill figure near the village of Cerne Abbas in Dorset, England. Made by a turf-cut outline filled with chalk, it depicts a large naked man and is typically described as a giant wielding a club. The figure is listed as a scheduled monument in the United Kingdom and the site where he stands is owned by the National Trust.
The origin and age of the figure are unclear. It is often thought of as an ancient construction, though the earliest mention of it dates to the late 17th century. Early antiquarians associated it, on little evidence, with a Saxon deity, while other scholars sought to identify it with a Celtic British figure of the Roman Hercules or some syncretization of the two. Archaeological evidence that parts of the drawing have been lost over time strengthen the Hercules identification. The lack of earlier descriptions leads modern scholars to conclude that it probably dates from the 17th century, and perhaps originated as political satire.
Regardless of its age, the Cerne Abbas Giant has become an important part of local culture and folklore, which often associates it with fertility. It is one of England's best known hill figures and is a visitor attraction in the region.

CERNE GIANT GETS MAKE-OVER THANKS TO NATIONAL TRUST
The Cerne Abbas Giant a huge chalk figure carved in a Dorset hillside is having a make-over organised by The National Trust.
Volunteers and parents and children all took part in making this huge creation stand out again from the grass field in which it is.
With time the outlines of it fade as rain and weeds dull its lines and the people have all helped to scrape the lines and replace with fresh crushed chalk.
The carving is world famous and is best known for having its manhood displayed erect.
The penis is 36feet long and the standing man is in total over 180 metres tall.

Around Cerne Abbas
Just some clips of countryside around Cerne Abbas, Dorset.
The Cerne Giant - which is also known as The Rude Man (for obvious reasons) is a figure carved into the chalk of the hillside. Even though there have been iron age settlements here (and even earlier) it is widely accepted that it was made by druids. However some say it is a much more recent feature made during the English Civil War by Royalists as an insult to Oliver Cromwell. Either way this is a fascinating landscape with many trails and footpaths, a priory, nearby gardens open to the public and a pleasant village to explore with added bonus of great pubs. The New Inn was having a makeover while we were there back in October.
Please note - the path leading up to and around the Cerne Giant is very steep and can be slippery especially after it's rained or there's dew on the grass. Wear walking shoes or similar.
