Guaita in City of San Marino, San Marino
Guaita in City of San Marino, San Marino
Guaita, Cesta and the Montale Tower are the three “pinnacles”, simbol of Mount Titano, defensive bulwarks of the liberty, so sacred to the San Marino population.
In the tiny state of San Marino, you will find the World Heritage site - the ancient Guaita castle, whose construction dates back to the 11th century. In reality the old castle is only a part of the architectural complex, which consists of three towers. They were erected much later than Guaita, which had served as a prison since its foundation. The hill Monte-Titano, on which there are three castle towers, is the highest point of the state. Its height above sea level forms 750 meters.
Many tourists visit the historical sight not only to look at the unique century-old architecture, but also to appreciate the excellent panorama of the tiny state. From Italian, the name of the Guaita tower is translated as 'the first tower'. By the year 1475 he had preserved the original form. Since the end of the 15th century and over the course of the 200 years, the gymnast was almost constantly rebuilt. The prison built as a prison has preserved this dark status until 1970 and is therefore considered one of the oldest prisons in the world. Today, the castle is fully equipped for tourist purposes. On the top of the tower are the excellent viewing platforms.
Built directly on the rock with no foundation, with a pentagonal base, dates back to the X century, it has, however, been reinforced many times in the past.
It was rebuilt in the second half of the XV century, in the sixteenth century has been covered with a sloping roof. It is called the “Rocca Guaita” and, within its solid walls, protected by double walls (the external wall with merlons and truncated towers at the corners), the population found refuge during sieges. Some parts of the tower were used as prisons up til October, 1970.
The baroque coat-of-arms in stone situated over the entrance is that of the Republic and dates back to the 1600’s, before that it belonged to the Palazzo Pubblico (Public Palace). The internal wall stops at the Bell Tower on one side and the Pinnacle Tower on the other; these elements were built centuries later. The upper entrance door, which can be reached by a staircase, is protected by a small wooden construction of 1481. The courtyard contains some pieces of artillery from the Second World War: two mortars, a gift from Vittorio Emanuele II, two 75mm canons fired by the Guardians of the Rocca during national festivities, a gift of Vittorio Emanuele III.

Visit The San Marino Capital: The City Of San Marino!
So... is San Marino a country? Yes! San Marino is the 5th smallest country in the world. Full of beautiful mountains and amazing hikes. To get here you'll need to take the bus from Rimini to San Marino. Outside of the Rimini train station, get on the Bonelli bus 72 right near the Burger King. The trip is only about $10 roundtrip and it runs all day.
When you visit San Marino, go to the tourist office and buy a stamp to go in your passport book, then check out the Basilica Di San Marino. On the way there, you'll walk by the beautiful town hall building aka Palazzo Pubblico. San Marino population is only 33,000, and most of them you won't see because if you're a tourist, you're more than likely going to visit the three towers.
The Three Towers of San Marino:
1) Guaita
2) De La Fratta (or Cesta Castle)
3) Montale
The towers used to serve as lookout points for intruders but today they are museums filled with ancient weapons and armor.
Visit San Marino for great views, ancient history, and if you want to check off a micro country in your passport book.

San Marino Medieval Fortress with Towers on Mount Titano
Please support my channel and subscribe. Thanks. :)
The Three Towers of San Marino are a group of towers located in San Marino. Located on the three peaks of Monte Titano in the capital, also called San Marino, they are depicted on both the national flag and coat of arms.
The Guaita is the oldest of the three towers, and the most famous. It was constructed in the 11th century and served briefly as a prison. It was rebuilt numerous times and reached its current form in the 15th century during the war fought between San Marino and the House of Malatesta.
The Cesta is located on the highest of Monte Titano's summits. A museum to honor Saint Marinus, created in 1956, is located in this tower and showcases over 1,550 weapons dating from the Medieval Era to the modern day.[2] It was constructed in the 13th century on the remains of an older Roman fort.
The Montale is located on the smallest of Monte Titano's summits. Unlike the other towers, this one is not open to the public. It was constructed in the 14th century. It is thought to have been constructed to give protection against the increasing power of the Malatesta family in that region.[4] It was also used as a prison, and accordingly, the only entrance to the tower is a door about seven metres from ground level, which was common for prison architecture of the time.
San Marino: Tower I
The Guaita or the First Tower is the oldest of the three towers in San Marino, and the most famous. It was constructed in the 11th century and served briefly as a prison. The view from the top is simply stunning!

San Marino Historic centre
San Marino is the world's oldest republic and Europe's third smallest state. It lies 657 m above sea level with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and Adriatic coast, and is situated only 10km from Rimini. Legend has it that the founder of San Marino, a stonemason arrived from the island of Rab in Dalmatia, climbed Mt. Titano to found a small community of Christians, persecuted for their faith by the Emperor Diocletian.
San Marino is made up of a few towns dotted around the mountain sides. The capital of San Marino is itself called 'San Marino' and is situated high up on a mountain top. The capital is surrounded by a wall and three distinct towers overlook the rest of the country. The site San Marino: Historic Centre and Mount Titano has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.

From the top of Cesta Tower, the highest point in San Marino, you can see the entire country spreading out below. The tower also hosts a very exciting “Museum of Historical Weapons”, with more than 700 armor and weapons exhibits. The oldest tower is known as “Guaita Tower”, built in the 11th century. Montale, the smallest of three towers constructed in the 14th century, is not open to the public. Mount Titano has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.
City of San Marino and its three peaks and fortresses #SanMarino - ????️ Travel video
The city of San Marino is the capital city of the Republic of San Marino and it lies on the western slopes of San Marino's highest point, Monte Titano.
San Marino is an enclaved microstate surrounded by Italy, situated on the Italian Peninsula. Its size is just over 61 km2 and it's located close to the riviera of Rimini, one of Italy's main coastal resort areas.
The country derives its name literally from Saint Marinus, a stonemason originating from the Roman colony on the island of Rab, in modern-day Croatia. Marinus, according to legend, participated in the reconstruction of Rimini's city walls after their destruction by pirates. Marinus then went on to found an independent monastic community on Monte Titano in 301; thus, San Marino lays claim to be the oldest extant sovereign state as well as the oldest constitutional republic.
The urban heart of the city was protected by three towers: the first, Guaita, constructed in the 11th century, was famous for being impenetrable, which to a great extent discouraged attacks on the city.
Due to the Crusades, it was felt necessary to construct a second tower, Cesta or De La Fratta (13th century). But the Sanmarinense defensive system was not completed until the construction of a third tower, the Montale (14th century) - the smallest of all and constructed on the last of the summits of Monte Titano.
The Guaita fortress, the oldest of the three towers constructed on Monte Titano is the most famous. It is one of the three towers depicted on both the national flag and coat of arms. It was registered as one of the World Heritage Sites in 2008.
