Our adventure begins in dense rainforests outside Cairns in the north of Queensland, one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. We are part of an expedition that will travel far from the tourist trail and into vast unspoiled regions in order to search for an extraordinary aborigine, the Walangee! A newly-ignited forest fire forces us to change direction and take an alternative route. On this occasion it is no problem otherwise our entire expedition could be in jeopardy. Our new route travels along a gravel-covered forest road: a four wheel drive vehicle in this part of Queensland is an absolute necessity.Three rivers, the Lockhart, Pascoe and Jardine, as well as numerous small tributaries, flow across the pathless jungle area of the north coast of Australia. The river is a habitat for a large variety of very unusual creatures. We feel a little like how the first European discoverers of Australia must have felt. Cape York Peninsula was one of the first regions to be discovered by the first seafarers here long before Captain James Cook discovered the fifth continent. Within his hut Chief Walangee is busy with the creation of a new harpoon. For the inhabitants of Cape York Peninsula, for thousands of years the harpoon has been the most important hunting device. Today the point of the harpoon is made of iron. Chief Walangee is one of the last authentic hunters of this region. We also visit one of the most famous diving sites in the world, the Great Barrier Reef, that consists of around a thousand islands and almost three thousand individual reefs. This journey into Australia’s natural past has confirmed that it is one of the world’s most untouched land masses in which ancient traditions continue to be used for practical purposes, not just a tourist’s carefully posed photo opportunity!

Water is pouring from a mountain towards the lower valley overpassing over a cliff and rocks worked and reshaped since thousands of years by this hydraulic power able to dig holes into the hardest stones. In front of a breathtaking panorama the visitors will memorize these extraordinary conditions to take them home as wonderful souvenirs of a succesful excursion. About Waterfalls: is a place where flowing water rapidly drops in elevation as it flows over a steep region or a cliff.Waterfalls are commonly formed when a river is young. At these times the channel is often narrow and deep. When the river courses over resistant bedrock, erosion happens slowly, while downstream the erosion occurs more rapidly.As the watercourse increases its velocity at the edge of the waterfall, it plucks material from the riverbed. Whirlpools created in the turbulence as well as sand and stones carried by the watercourse increase the erosion capacity.[1] This causes the waterfall to carve deeper into the bed and to recede upstream. Often over time, the waterfall will recede back to form a canyon or gorge downstream as it recedes upstream, and it will carve deeper into the ridge above it.The rate of retreat for a waterfall can be as high as one and half meters per year.Often, the rock stratum just below the more resistant shelf will be of a softer type, meaning that undercutting due to splashback will occur here to form a shallow cave-like formation known as a rock shelter under and behind the waterfall. Eventually, the outcropping, more resistant cap rock will collapse under pressure to add blocks of rock to the base of the waterfall. These blocks of rock are then broken down into smaller boulders by attrition as they collide with each other, and they also erode the base of the waterfall by abrasion, creating a deep plunge pool or gorge.Streams become wider and shallower just above waterfalls due to flowing over the rock shelf, and there is usually a deep area just below the waterfall because of the kinetic energy of the water hitting the bottom. Waterfalls normally form in a rocky area due to erosion. After a long period of being fully formed, the water falling off the ledge will retreat, causing a horizontal pit parallel to the waterfall wall. Eventually, as the pit grows deeper, the waterfall collapses to be replaced by a steeply sloping stretch of river bed.In addition to gradual processes such as erosion, earth movement caused by earthquakes or mudslides or volcanoes can cause a differential in land heights which interfere with the natural course of a water flow, and result in waterfalls.A river sometimes flows over a large step in the rocks that may have been formed by a fault line. Waterfalls can occur along the edge of a glacial trough, whereby a stream or river flowing into a glacier continues to flow into a valley after the glacier has receded or melted. The large waterfalls in Yosemite Valley are examples of this phenomenon, which is referred to as a hanging valley. Another reason hanging valleys may form is where two rivers join and one is flowing faster than the other.[1] Waterfalls can be grouped into ten broad classes based on the average volume of water present on the fall (which depends on both the waterfall's average flow and its height) using a logarithmic scale. Class 10 waterfalls include Niagara Falls, Paulo Afonso Falls and Khone Falls.Classes of other well-known waterfalls include Victoria Falls and Kaieteur Falls (Class 9); Rhine Falls and Gullfoss (Class 8); Angel Falls and Dettifoss (Class 7); Yosemite Falls, Lower Yellowstone Falls and Umphang Thee Lor Sue Waterfall (Class 6); Sutherland Falls (Class 5).Block: Water descends from a relatively wide stream or river.Cascade: Water descends a series of rock steps.Cataract: A large, powerful waterfall.Chute: A large quantity of water forced through a narrow, vertical passage.Fan: Water spreads horizontally as it descends while remaining in contact with bedrock.Frozen: Any waterfall which has some element of ice.Horsetail: Descending water maintains some contact with bedrock.Plunge: Water descends vertically, losing contact with the bedrock surface.Punchbowl: Water descends in a constricted form and then spreads out in a wider pool.Segmented: Distinktion separate flows of water form as it descends.Tiered: Water drops in a series of distinct steps or falls.Multi-step: A series of waterfalls one after another of roughly the same size each with its own sunken plunge pool.(wikipedia)

10. The Cullinan Diamond (530 Carats)
The Cullinan Diamond was discovered in Gauteng, South Africa, in 1905. The large blue-white stone was just 30 feet from the surface and was extracted by a miner with a pocket knife. Easy peasy!! He took it to the office to have it measured, and it weighed 3,106.75 carats, about 621 grams, which made it by far the largest diamond to have been found at the time.
9. The Golden Jubilee (545.67 Carats)
Weighing in at 545.67 carats, the Golden Jubilee diamond is the largest cut and faceted diamond in the world. From images, it looks to be a golden orange color, but it's actually graded as a fancy yellow-brown stone.
8. Star of Adam (1,404 Carats)
In 2016, the world’s largest blue sapphire was unearthed in Sri Lanka, weighing in at a massive 1,404 Carats- which is the equivalent to almost 10 ounces. It came from a mine in the southern city of Ratnapura- a place that is known as the “city of gems” because of the large numbers of precious stones that are found there. Still, this was a major find- the Sri Lankan gem industry is thought to be worth about 103 million dollars annually, but this one was valued at more than 100 million dollars just by itself!!
7. The Rajaratna Ruby (2,475 Carats)
The Rajaratna ruby was first unveiled in 1986 and, at the time, was thought to be the largest ruby in the world. It's had an eventful history, and was thought to have originated in either one of India's two well-known ruby and sapphire regions during medieval times- Kalinga and Kalpur… or Mogok in Burma- places synonymous with discoveries of large gems.
6. The Pearl of Puerto (75 lb)
In 2016 the world’s largest pearl was found in the Philippines in the most unlikely of places- underneath a fisherman’s bed, where it had been for at least 10 years. According to the man, he had found it while out fishing when his boat’s anchor had become tangled with a giant clam, and he had to swim down to dislodge it. The pearl is one foot wide, 2.2 feet long, and weighs 75 pounds- which means it could be worth as much as 100 million dollars!
5. Sergio Diamond (3,167 Carats)
While it’s not worth as much as other diamonds that have been found, the Sergio Diamond is something quite special- and is thought to have been the largest rough diamond to have ever been discovered.
4. Olympic Australis (17,000 Carats)
Australia is undoubtedly the home of opals, and in 1956, at the ‘eight-mile' mining field in the town of Coober Pedy, miners found the largest ever to be discovered. It was dug from a cavity about 30 feet beneath the surface, and they couldn't believe their eyes when they realized what it was. Weighing a massive 17,000 carats, it's 11 inches long and 4.5 inches high.
3. 125West Ruby (18,696 Carats)
Rubies are a type of corundum mineral- given their name because of their deep, rich, red hue. They come in a variety of colors, though, with red ones always being called a ruby, and other types being called sapphires. They are the second hardest known minerals, after diamonds, so great care has to be taken when turning rough stones into polished pieces.

Topaz is well known for its ability to form huge crystals, but the even the miners of Minas Gerais in Brazil were surprised in the early '80s when they dug up some particularly amazing stones.
1. The Bahia Emerald (1.7m Carats)
And of course no list of giant stones would be complete without this big guy! This is the biggest rough gemstone that has ever been found- the Bahia Emerald. It was found in a mine in Bahia, Brazil, in 2001, and is a rock that contains 9 crystals- one of which is the largest single emerald crystal to have ever been discovered. In total, the Bahia rock is thought to contain at least 1.7 million carats, and is estimated to be worth up to 400 million dollars.
