Ceylon Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Ceylon in India.
Surrounded by the deep blue of the Indian Ocean lies a beautiful, fairytale-like island south east of the coast of India. In recent decades this island has developed into a popular tourist destination that attracts people from all over the world. Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka, has a splendid mixture of both western and eastern influences and, along with its many old and modern buildings, never fails to surprise. Modern skyscrapers highlight the city’s flourishing new economy and with approximately five hundred thousand inhabitants Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka. As with the country itself Colombo is influenced by a multicultural society that is dominated by its Singhalese population. Along the road from Colombo to Kandy is an elephants’ orphanage that currently tends to the needs of around eighty animals. Most of the parents of the young elephants were shot and killed by ruthless poachers while others were ignored by their mother and left to fend for themselves in Sri Lanka’s forests. The regime of an elephant school usually consists of teaching the elephants to march in line and in pairs as well as teaching them how to move, carry and stack timber. Sri Lanka is one of the world’s main producers of tea. The reason for its success lies in the exceptional quality of its tea. Ceylon tea is a fine, dark tea that has today become a popular ingredient in many different blends. Some areas on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast were devastated by the horrific Tsunami tragedy of December 2004. It will take a considerable amount of time for the people there to recover from the effects of the TSUNAMI disaster and for their villages to return to a semblance of normality. A massive reconstruction programme is now underway. The openness and hospitality of the people allied with the country’s natural splendour and impressive cultural diversity make Sri Lanka one of the most amazing island paradises on Earth!

Sri Lanka is an island country in South East Asia which has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest.
After a 30 year long civil war which ended in 2009 the diverse country is now opening up more an more for tourism.
The goal of this series is to give you an introduction to the country and the neighboring Maldives starting with Sri Lankas tea region, temples and the rock fortress of sigiriya in this episode.
After arrival we are traveling from Colombo to Kandy by train to take in all the impressive views along the way. In Kandy I go on a river excursion to spot birds along the Mahaweli river before visiting the temple of the tooth in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy.
The tea region around Nuwara Eliya is close to Kandy - you should go there by taking the train from Kandy to Ella. Make sure to visit a tea factory, too!
In the north of Central Sri Lanka the Lion Rock Sigiriya is definitely a Must-Visit. Another one is the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa and the Kaudulla National Park.
This part of the trip was executed within 2weeks by using tuk tuk, buses, boats and trains - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do in Central Sri Lanka:
- Mahaweli River
- Kandy
- Temple of the Tooth
- train from Kandy to Ella
- Nuwara Eliya & tea factories
- Dambulla
- Sigiriya & scenic flight
- Ancient City of Polonnaruwa

???? Kandy Food Market - Food Travel Blog - Sri Lanka Vlog Street Food - Meat Fish Vegetable Markets - Kandy market is set just by the bus station in the centre of the city. It is housed in a maze of market stalls around a central building with a green area and pond in the middle. This market does have a few units of clothing and tourist type things but is mainly based on the local market buying their fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and spices. Worth a look if you are into seeing local produce but for sure there are better places around if you just want clothing and tourist bits. For us as foodies we love it. There are and you will here on the video crows or ravens all over the place in Kandy and they like to swoop down and grab food from the market sellers. A busy local market full of great characters and super vibes. Pol sambola (coconut sambol) is a traditional Sri Lankan dish made from coconut, mostly used as an accompaniment with rice, string hoppers, hoppers, and many more meals. Sri Lankan cuisine has been shaped by many historical, cultural, and other factors. Foreign traders who brought new food items; influences from Indonesian cuisine and the cuisine of Southern India have all helped to shape Sri Lankan cuisine. Today, some of the staples of Sri Lankan cuisine are rice, coconut, and spices. The latter are used due to Sri Lanka's history as a spice producer and trading post over several centuries. Kottu is a spicy stir-fry of shredded roti bread with vegetables. Optional ingredients include eggs, meat, or cheese. It was invented in Batticaloa and literally means 'chopped roti' in Tamil. Hoppers (appam) are based on a fermented batter, usually made of rice flour and coconut milk with spices. The dish is pan-fried or steamed. The fermenting agent is palm toddy or yeast. Hopper variants can be either savory (such as egg hoppers, milk hoppers, and string hoppers), or sweet (such as vandu appa and pani appa). Kool is a seafood broth from Jaffna containing crab, fish, cuttlefish, prawns, and crayfish. It also contains long beans, jak seeds, manioc, spinach, and tamarind. The dish is thickened with palmyra root flour. Short eats are a variety of snacks that are bought by the dozen from short eat shops and restaurants. These are eaten on the go, mainly for breakfast or during the evening. Short eats include pastries, Chinese rolls and patties. A popular short eat among Tamils is the mutton roll, made from tender pieces of mutton with potato and seasoned with spices. This can be a very spicy dish. Mutton rolls are served all over the world wherever there are Sri Lankan Tamils.

Our Holidays in Sri Lanka - Kandy & Nuwara Eliya -
Kandy is the English name for the city of Maha Nuvara (Senkadagalapura) in the centre of Sri Lanka. It lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy Valley, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka; it is both an administrative and religious city. It is the capital of the Central Province (which encompasses the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya) and also of Kandy District.
Nuwara Eliya meaning city on the plain (table land) or city of light, is a town in Sri Lanka. It is located at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) in the central highlands and is considered one of the most important locations for Tea production in Sri Lanka. The town is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, the highest mountain in Sri Lanka.
10 Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka - Travel Video
Sri Lanka may be a small island in the Indian Ocean but that’s the only thing small about it. The country, formerly known as Ceylon, boasts an ancient civilization, golden sandy beaches with their swaying coconut palms, mountains, and tea plantations. While visiting the island, you’ll see colonial architecture from the days when the Portuguese, Dutch and English ruled. You’ll also see lots of elephants, some of which participate in local festivals and, if you’re lucky, perhaps a leopard or two at a wildlife sanctuary. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Sri Lanka:

HONEYMOON IN SRI LANKA | Part One - Sigiriya & Kandy
Welcome to our next honeymoon adventure! We are exploring beautiful Sri Lanka (the most green country we've ever travelled to!) starting in Sigiriya and moving on to Kandy before Ella, Yala, Mirissa and Gale (all coming in the next two videos!)
We booked our honeymoon with Barefoot Traveller - - who organised the most amazing itinerary for us and arranged a private driver (*kindly gifted) through Ceylon Roots -
We cannot recommend booking with Barefoot Traveller highly enough - our driver, Dammika, was brilliant and so much more than a driver - he was our guide and photographer (ha ha) throughout our two weeks in Sri Lanka and we felt very safe and learnt so much about his beautiful country.
From the incredible elephants, to the gorgeous green views, I hope that you enjoy coming along with us and stay tuned for the next videos (so much more to see!) Thank you for watching and subscribing xoxo

City Description:
Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka. It's set on a plateau surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and biodiverse rainforest. The city's heart is scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), which is popular for strolling. Kandy is famed for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession. In the nearby Peradeniya suburb, the Royal Botanic Gardens is known for its orchid collection and massive palm trees. The Ceylon Tea Museum, in a former tea factory, has a library and exhibits that explore Sri Lanka's history as a major exporter of the beverage. Kandy is also a gateway to the Knuckles Mountains, a popular destination for hiking and camping.
Weather and Events:
Kandy is warm year-round, with an Apr/May–Sep monsoon season and frequent thunderstorms Oct–Nov. Many people choose to visit Dec–Mar, when rain is less prevalent. Apr–May are also popular, due to events like Avurudu (Buddhist New Year, Apr), and Vesak (May), when locals celebrate the birth of Buddha with religious rites and artistic performances. Esala Perahera (Aug), a 10-day festival honoring the tooth relic at Sri Dalada Maligawa shrine, is known for its elaborate street shows and elephant parades.
