Chacchoben Mayan Ruins 2-2015 Quintana Roo Mexico pyramids Mahahual
Chacchoben Mayan Ruins, a settlement by the Maya at the site is estimated at 200 BC, and the structures date from 700 AD.
In the 1940s a farm was established near the site by the Cohuo family, but the ruins were officially reported to the Mexican government in June 1972 by Dr. Peter Harrison, an American archaeologist who was working on a project for Tulane University, and who also made the first maps of Chacchoben. Harrison stumbled upon this site while flying a helicopter over Mexico and noticed numerous hills in predominately flat lands. Harrison realized there were temples beneath these hills, which were naturally covered over a period of 2000 years.
In 1994 the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) excavated and restored the site, which was closed to the public until 2002. The guide said about 3% was restored.
Some structures still bear traces of the red paint-stucco with which they were originally coated.
The surrounding jungle is characterized by abundant species of fauna such as, deer, peccary, armadillo, gray fox, spider monkey and howler monkey. Deeper into the jungle, more dangerous animals like jaguar, ocelot, puma and tapir can be found.
- quick vacation video... sorry, some go-pro clips shaky
Satellite photos have shown that there are up to 4,000 Mayan sites deep in the jungles.

Tour of the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins near Costa Maya Mexico
Mexico is renowned for its amazing Mayan ruins. Tulum is perhaps more well-known than the Chacchoben ruins, however the Chacchoben site is still very impressive and worth your visit. From our cruise ship docked in Costa Maya, the ruins were a 45 minute van ride through our tour company. Our tour guide and driver were Mayan and were born and raised in the vicinity of the ruins. As the video illustrates, our guide had a superb knowledge of ancient Mayan culture, traditions, architecture and helped clear up some Mayan myths. Make sure to post a comment below if you liked this tour of the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins near Costa Maya Mexico and give it a thumbs up! Also, check out my other Mayan ruin videos in Mexico.

Chacchoben Mayan Ruins Tour! | Costa Maya, Mexico! | MSC Seaside 2019! Ep 18
Good morning from BEAUTIFUL Costa Maya!! Today we are docked with the Norwegian Getaway & Carnival Miracle!!
We head downstairs to the casino to get some change of our $20 bills only to realize that we're in port and the casino is closed while the ship is in port! We instead head over to Guest Services and grab some change that way.
We're greeted with a very long walk down pier to an AMAZING port area! It was like a maze in there with a ton of shops and restaurants!
We walked down to meet our tour guide for the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins Tour! We had a nice little bus ride over to the ruins and passed many local shops and towns.
After getting to the ruins, we got a personal tour all around Chocchoben and learned a lot of great information!
Tune in next time for our lunch on the beach, port exploring, and sailaway!!

Chacchoben Ruins - Costa Maya, Mexico - Mayan Ruins
A short trip around the temples/ruins of Chaccoben in Costa Maya, Mexico. There are 4 total unearthed temples spread out along the grounds with many others still under huge mounds of dirt that the government doesn't have funds to unearth. The tour took about 1.5 hours and was a very easy walk.

Chacchoben Mayan Ruins tour near Costa Maya, Mexico
Chacchoben is one of the more popular ruin sites in southern Quintana Roo, with regular tourist trips from the port of Costa Maya.
About an hour bus ride by Tucan Tours. Perfect Spring temps in the 80s which is considered cool by the locals (Mayans) compared to the 110's in summer. Guides explain the history and culture of the Mayans. Good 1/2 day excursion from the cruise ship port.
Costa Maya: Chacchoben Mayan Ruins from Norwegian Cruise Line 2018
We went on the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins tour which was about an hour long bus ride from the port of Costa Maya. From the pictures and description on the cruise's website, I wasn't too excited about this opportunity and we almost didn't do the excursion. (I wanted to see one of the more famous ruins which wasn't an option at this stop). Anyway, I'm so glad we did. Its a fascinating area with many Mayan temples. Some are still uncovered!
The area was discovered in the 1940's when a local farmer moved onto the land with his family. In the 1970's, he invited an archaeologist to the site. When he flew over the land, he noticed there were several large mounds in an area that was otherwise flat. In the 1990's excavation of the site began. It was opened in 2002 to tourists.
The settlement dates back to 1000 BC, but the structures are thought to date back to 700 AD. Chacchoben is the modern name given to the area, which means Place of the red corn. The original name is not known.
Some hieroglyphics were found on the outside of the temples, but they were not in great condition. The pyramids are said to have an agricultural significance. When the sun would hit the pyramids in certain areas at certain times of year, the Mayans would know when to plant or harvest their crops.
At this time, we do not know what is on the inside of the temples. They are continuing to excavate the site.
Definitely worth a trip if you're in the area.
PS Ethan was exhausted. The kid literally fell asleep at the bottom of a pyramid.
