A Walking Tour of Lovely Arequipa, Peru: City of Volcanoes

Climbing the volcano Misti (5822m) - Trekking Peru
Climbing the volcano Misti in the region of Arequipa, Peru. We hike the Misti up to the base camp located at 4800m above sea level. Early morning at 3am we have a quick breakfast an begin the final part of the trekking. After the sunrise Fanny had some altitude sickness problem and had to hike down with Nathalia. I went to the top of the volcano with the guide and discover the smoky crater of the misti. An unforgettable experience in the Peruvian mountain.

PERU' 05 Nazca e Arequipa

Arequipa - Things to do | Barranco Lima | Peru Travel Series - Last Ep
Arequipa was listed as one of the best cities to visit by Lonely Planet. Hence we made sure we made a stop here, even if for a few hours. It is also called the White City of Peru because of all the white colonial buildings made of sillar. It is also covered by three volcanoes, and one of the best activities to do here, if you have more time than us, is to hike the Colca Canyon!
Later, after exploring Arequipa, we spent half a day in Miraflores Lima, and then an hour checking out the murals and wall graffitis at Barranco. Best 1 hour walking around Lima ever. This is also the last travel vlog from my Peru Travel series, but I have one more video coming up on the Peruvian food.

El Misti Southern Peru 5,822 meters - Climbing - Trekking - Hiking
Company used for the climb:
Many thanks to our guide José and his assistant Elvis.
El Misti is an active and very symmetrical volcano towering over the white city of Arequipa (2380 meters), the second largest city in Peru.
This area was an important settlement area since before the Inca. The Spanish founded the city in 1545. Since the region has a history of earthquakes and eruptions it was only a matter of time before Arequipa was impacted. It was severely damaged in 1600 and then rebuilt. El Misti, thankfully, hasn’t had a major eruption since the 1400’s. In 1998 several mummies were discovered inside the crater rim of the volcano, confirming its sanctification under the Incas.
El Misti is known as somewhat of a tourist mountain because many travelers to Arequipa see this spectacular mountain and decide to give it a try. Five to ten people a week climb up its dusty slopes, though the percentage of people who actually make the summit is pretty low because of acclimatization issues.
In general one needs two days to make it to the top, for that reason a tent, etc. are necessary. To make it in one day one should be perfectly acclimated and in high physical condition. Few can do the climb in one day.
