Thailand: Chachoengsao ฉะเชิงเทรา 2012
Chachoengsao (Thai: ฉะเชิงเทรา ) is a town (thesaban mueang) in central Thailand, capital of the Chachoengsao Province. It is located on the bank of the Bang Pakong River. It occupies the tambon Na Mueang and parts of Ban Mai, Bang Tin Pet, Wang Takhian and Sothon of Mueang Chachoengsao district. As of 2006 it has a population of 60,893.
The town was established in the year 1549 during the reign of King Maha Chakkrapat of Ayutthaya and originally used as a centre for armed force recruitment. During the reign of King Maha Thammaracha, the kingdom was in a weak condition due to being defeated by the Burmese. Phraya Lawaek, the Khmer king conscripted Thai people from several towns including Chachoengsao to be in his work force.
Chachoengsao is sometimes referred to as Paet Riu, such a name is derived from large sized fish locally caught in the past. Paet Riu literally means 8 cuts or slices which refers to the way the fish was cooked and served as a local dish in Chachoengsao.
The town is about 50 km east of Bangkok and can be accessed by train.
The west part of the province is the low river plain of the Bang Pa Kong River, which is used extensively for farming rice. To the east is more hilly terrain, with an average height of more than 100 m above sea level.

is located in the Municipality of Mueang Chachoengsao by the Bang Pakong River. Initially, it was named Wat Hong, which was built in the late Ayutthaya period. The temple enshrines Luangpho Phuttha Sothon, the Buddha image of Chachoengsao province which is revered by the people of Chachoengsao. This sacred Buddha image is believed to bring in an abundance of fruit and food, as well as expel illness. Built by a Lan Chang craftsman, the 1.98 metre-high stucco image of Buddha is in the posture of meditation, with a lap width of 1.65 metre.
According to history, the Buddha image magically floated up the river and was invited to be enshrined in this temple around 1770 in the early Thon Buri period. Initially, it was a bronze image in the posture of meditation, with a lap width of more than one Sok ( Thai measurement equivalent to 50 cm ). It had a very beautiful shape.
The monks were afraid that the image might be stolen, they, therefore, decided to cover the image with mortar. The covered image is the present appearance visitors can see. Nowadays, many people from all walks of life come to pay homage to and cover the image with gold leaf.
I visited Chachoengsao Province in June 2010, first port of call was this Temple, it was amazing to see a whole community surrounding this Temple’s grounds, selling all manner of artefacts associated with religion. There was a section that had Thai traditional dancing and the dancers were dressed in Thai costumes as you can see from the pictures
Khlong Suan Market, or 100 year old market, Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. ( 2 )
We set off to this market on a day that was raining so hard I wondered whether it was worth going. But having arrived here, the rain stopped and the sun came out. What it had done though was keep all the people away so it was much easier to get round the market, as very few people had come that day.
I would not really call this a floating market but more a market situated on a canal, but the setting made for a great day out, and the market was first class.
Situated on the banks of Prawet burirom Canal, Khlong Suan Market lies in two provinces: Tambon Thepparat, Amphoe Ban Pho, Chachoengsao Province and Tambon Khlong Suan, Amphoe Bang Bo, Samut Prakan Province.
This traditional market dates back to the reign of King Rama V. The market contains many different shops, which are getting rare these days, since they are increasingly being replaced by modern convenience stores and shopping malls.
After more than 100 years old, it still retains the quaint charm of the old days. Visitors will be pleased with the traditional market atmosphere while enjoying a great variety of tasty food.
Klong Suan will dazzle you with its old shop houses and stalls selling a variety of tasty traditional foods like tom yam noodles, sweet Thai sausage and pot-stewed duck to desserts made from coconut, quaint old utensils and ancient tin toys.
A symbol fitting of the market is a 71 year old coffee shop, Pae Lee, laid out with a few single round tables and stools. The shop takes its name from its owner, a genial elderly person with a ready smile for his patrons.
The most touching aspect of this community, is not the ambience nor the well-maintained buildings or their architecture, but it is the residents' traditional way of life that remains largely untouched by the tides of time.
Khlong Prawet Burirom ( Khlong Phra Khanong ) was one of the great arterial waterways of the pre-automobile era in Thailand. It runs from The Chao Phraya River at Khlong Toei near Bangkok's Port, Eastwards to the Bang Pakong River near Chachoengsao, a distance of some 55 km. It is still used by boat services, but only from Phra Khanong Bridge on the Sukhumvit Road to Srinakharin rd. Passage further east is blocked by the water gates near Prawet.

Chachoengsao 100 Years Old Market
Chachoengsao Talat Khlong Suan Roi Piตลาดคลองสวนร้อยปี, 100 yars old market in Chachoengsao district of Thailand only a short drive from Bangkok or Pattaya. The images shows what you can expect to see, buy or eat. Most of it is cheap, like in any other market. It was very hot, 42 degrees Celsius when we visited the market in the month of April / May. The market is very old and has its own characters, but in generally it is very similar to other markets in Thailand. No more smiles to see nowhere in the land of smiles this days, you almost feel like you really are a pain in the ass and not welcome at all.
