Grand Bahama Blue Hole Adventure Dec 31 2013
Blue Hole Snorkel Adventure
This Adventure is 8.5 to 9 hours in duration
Blue holes are seen as mysterious, with their large almost circular mouths and long vertical drops completely filled with water. Found scattered throughout the archipelago on both land and sea, the Bahamas boast over 1,000 blue holes with intricate cave systems. Their bluish green waters seen from an aerial view is how these sink-holes, formed by rainwater and carbon dioxide within the last ice age, were given this commonly used name. Asiatic settlers to the Bahamas were the first locals to encounter these blue holes and saw them as supernatural gateways to their spiritual world and were often used to shield themselves from a wind god known as Huracan. National Geographic and teams of scientists investigating these rooms have now given us a view of their geology, water chemistry, biology, paleontology, archaeology and astrobiology. Allow us, the local naturalists of Grand Bahama Island, to spend a day with you and share the historic discoveries found over the past 2 decades and the amazing story of an archipelago that has the most and the deepest blue holes in the world.
Your adventure begins with pickup from your resorts/lodgings within the Freeport area.
During the drive your guide will share the interesting story of the city you are visiting, providing insights for your specific tour that go beyond information given on any other local tours.
There are 5 different stops during this adventure and each has an activity. The main activity of this tour is snorkeling. Each destination must be reached by vehicle.
Stop 1. Crabbing Bay Boiling Hole
Here you will enjoy a beautiful sandy beach that stretches for miles. Receive snorkeling equipment and instructions. Follow your guide on a short walk from the beach in shallow crystal clear waters and then submerge your face to explore a blue hole teaming with schools of fish life. This Blue Hole is known as an Ocean or Marine Blue Hole.
Stop 2. Rocky Creek
This is the name of a small local village. We will drive through this quaint settlement to their picturesque creek, used daily by local fishermen. Once there, don snorkeling equipment and after a short guided swim in shallow waters, explore yet another blue hole that is teaming with schools of fish. This exciting blue hole is surrounded by tall aquatic trees known as Red Mangroves, the roots of these trees are designed to prop the trees above water. This is an ecosystem known as a Mangrove-Swash-Land. This Blue Hole is known as a Swash-Land Blue Hole.
Stop 3. High Rock
This is the name of a small local village. We will drive through this quaint settlement to their picturesque coastline and have lunch from a wooden deck facing a turquoise sea; the restaurant is known as Bishop's Place. After lunch layout in a sugary white sandy beach that runs for miles. Please note that lunch is not included into price of tour.
Stop 4. Lucayan National Park
Here you will be guided through 6 ecosystems on a short informative hike. Visit yet another beautiful beach. Explore 2 more blue holes surround by tall terrestrial trees. Enjoy stories from a scuba diver's perspective and all the wonderful discoveries made within these caves and throughout caves in the Bahamas. These Blue Holes are known as Inland Blue Holes.
Stop 5. Owls’ Hole
To get here includes an interesting off road drive through local Pine and Palm trees. Once there, take a short walk until the ground opens before your eyes, here lays the most impressive Inland Blue Hole of the day. Climb down a 30 foot drop by ladder with snorkeling equipment. This Hole is 30 feet in diameter. Snorkel a room of drinkable freshwater, have shrimps willingly clean your hand, see American freshwater eels and small fish known as sleeper gobies.
At the end of this Adventure, your guide will drive you back to your resort/lodging within the Freeport area, to conclude a day of snorkeling, hiking and an overview of the history of our Islands and Blue Holes.

Mary & Nathan and The Girls
Mary and Nathan brought their beautiful daughters to the Bahamas for an intimate beach weddings on Paradise Island. Although there were a few hiccups getting started (the taxi driver took them to the completely wrong place!) we all finally met up and had this wonderful private ceremony. The girls insisted on being a part of everything, except for the little one who took a few breaks to taste Bahamas sand. A family trash the dress session ended the day. Best of luck to this beautiful family.
