Story of Chain Tree is directly linked to the discovery of Wayanad. Legend says, Karinthandan, the local chieftain of the tribals, found the Wayanad Ghat route during the period 1700–1750 AD. He assisted the British in finding a way through the dense forest of Wayanad. In order to take credit of the discovery and reward, a British engineer killed Karinthandan.
But as they say unnatural deaths turn the dead into ghosts and that is what is believed to have happened on this spot. The soul of Karinthandan started troubling passengers and a number of accidents happened as a result. In order to resolve the issue the natives called a Priest and he chained the soul of Karinthandan to a huge Banyan tree.
This tree is today popularly known as “Chain Tree” and can be seen right at the entrance of Munnar bang on the highway.

History behind Thamarassery Churam
Sometime, you may feel the history as a funny one. But it has been told by the ancestors. During the time of foreigners' rule, it was difficult to get into the green paradise Wayanad. But most of the foreigners liked Wayanad the most. It's spices and beauty attracted them the most. But there was not a better route to Wayanad. They tried to make many passes. But it didn't reach any where. The head of a tribal community know the best access to Wayanad. He told them the way, the Thamarassery Churam. They constructed the pass and said that it was their idea and plan. Moreover the real founder was hanged to death. Then it is said that his soul made the travel through the pass difficult. He threw away the vehicles into the valley and all. Then he was chained to a tree and the problem is then solved. You can see the tree still standing near the pass with chain bounding.
The main attractions in Wayanad Churam
Many tourism hot spots are located around the town. Thusharagiri Falls is situated 20 km from the town.
The view point is another attraction. This is situated above the ninth hairpin bend, at a height of 2000 feet above sea level.. This place provides an excellent view of the green forest beneath. You can see the heavy vehicles moving up, taking long turns in the hairpin bends and the miniature view of small towns beneath. The cunning monkeys will be here too. You can feed them.
No problem, but you have to take every responsibility.
Chain tree is the place where the real founder of the Pass is chained. There is an interesting feature about this tree. Although this tree is getting taller, the straight chain hanging on the tree has been just touching the ground.
Things to Note
1.There is no need to plan a tour to Thamarassery pass.
2.When you are visiting Wayanad you can easily enjoy the pass.
3.There are many tourist destinations near the pass. Pookot, Lakkidi are very close to the pass.
4.Try to avoid your trip during monsoon. This is the time when there are large traffic blocks in the pass and chances of accidents are more.
