Chalakudy River or Chalakudy Puzha is the fourth longest river in Kerala. The river flows through Palakkad district, Thrissur District and Ernakulam District of Kerala. The total drainage area of the river is 1704 km². out of this 1404 km² lies in Kerala and the rest 300 km² in Tamil Nadu. The length of the river is 145.5 km. Though Chalakudy river in strict geological sense is a tributary of the Periyar river, for all practical purposes it is treated as a separate river by Government and other agencies.
The river though has its origin in the Anamalai region of Tamil Nadu, is actually a collection of some major tributaries originated from Parambikulam, Kuriyarkutti, Sholayar, Karapara and Anakayam in Kerala.Chalakudy River is the one of very few rivers of Kerala with relics of riparian vegetation in substantial level. The famous waterfalls, Athirappilly Falls and Vazhachal Falls, are situated on this river. The Athirapally falls join the Chalakudy river after plummeting down 80 ft.
Venad Express was introduced in 1976 by Southern Railways. Initially the service was between Ernakulam to Trivandrum Central. The train from Trivandrum Central started at 5.30 am and reached Ernakulam Junction by 9.30 am. On the return direction the train leaves Ernakulam Junction at 17:15 pm and reached Trivandrum Central by 21:30 pm. The train had a Green livery initially. The train was later extended to Shoranur after some years and timings were also revised. Venad is one of the oldest daily Intercity trains in Kerala and one of the most popular trains to travel between Trivandrum, the state capital and Ernakulam (Kochi), the most cosmopolitan city in the state.
The name Venad came from an old dynasty Venad Swarupam that ruled over Quilon and Thiruvananthapuram. It is a very popular commuter train, used by daily office-goers.
In 1980s Indian Railways introduced double-decker coaches in Venad Express. But railways later withdrew the double decker compartments due to operational issues.

ATHIRAPALLY-A WATERFALL WHICH WILL KEEP YOU GLUED FOR HOURS!
Athirapally is one of the most mesmerizing waterfall I have seen in South India. It stands at a height of 80ft on Chalakudy River in Thrissur District. Also known as Niagara of India as its a wide waterfall. Many Bollywould and south indian films have been shooted here including Bahubali, dil se and Ready. Now wonder whats so specail that so many films have been shooted here
!I never had the idea of shooting until I made a trip to this place and returned back. But one thing I can say it's a place where you can fleetlessly spend hours and you'll love the tranquility around. The upstream side was very calm the time I reached there and the downstream side is violent with 3 falls falling at a tremondous speed. But the real joy is when you go the bottom of the waterfall. It's simply astonishing!!!It's a bit risky though the fencing is well done but you'll be glued on the rocks to see the waterfall for hours!I actually came from Valparai side by a private bus to Athirapally and from here I took a bus to Thrissur as far as i remember. The roads between valaparai and Thrissur is all green bound and it's not going to bore you. This water fall is a must visit when you visit Kerala.
