A short film: Girlguiding Heron Rangers Africa Book Bus Safari Adventure 2013
We are a group of 18 Ranger Guides aged 14-19 and 3 Leaders leaders from Heron Ranger Guides in East London. We are part of Girlguiding, the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK.
In August 2013 we went on an adventure to South Africa, Zambia and Malawi. Working with The Book Bus charity, we had the chance to promote literacy to underprivileged communities.
We went with children's books funded by the global communications company RR Donnelley to encourage reading and to help bring the books to life for primary school children.
We found an opportunity to improve a primary school's library in Ulandi, Malawi by employing a painter and a carpenter and decorating it with our designs. Now the children have somewhere to sit and read our books.
We sung and danced, we made masks, we drew word searches by hand, we trimmed wool and we cut out endless templates. We made friends and we saw the most amazing wildlife.
We travelled using an overland truck, camping in tents, shopping in local markets and cooking for ourselves.
This short video is a brief introduction to our adventure.
