Rev. Takafumi Kawakami, Deputy Head Priest at Kyoto’s Shunkoin Temple, embraces the skill of mindfulness as the center of Zen Buddhism and meditation, inspiring us all to slow our frantic lives to stay true to the present.
Participating in a TED event can have unexpected results, ranging from establishing new friendships and connections to inspiring us to think, live and act in completely new ways. For Jason Hsu, TED conferences had a profound impact. In 2008 he combined his TED inspirations with his varied professional experiences as a news editor in Taiwan, entrepreneur in San Francisco and UNESCO volunteer to found The Big Question Conference, a local event in Taipei modeled after the TED conference experience. When TED established the TEDx program in 2009, Jason was quick to found TEDxTaipei, the second TEDx event established in Asia. Now, as curator for TEDxTaipei and TEDx ambassador for Asia as well as co-founder and Chief Catalyst for MakerBarTaipei, Jason’s goals for TEDxTaipei mirror the goals for TED and TEDx events around the world: to bring new ideas home, and to share local stories with the world.

The Quest for Perfect Skin in Japan Japanology
To many, the quintessential image of Japanese feminine beauty remains the pristine white visage of geisha and maiko, traditional entertainers who embody all that seems exotic and mysterious about Japan as inhabitants of the little-understood realm called the karyukai, the “flower and willow world.” In centuries past, geisha would apply a thick coat of snow-white oshiroi (once made from lead oxide, later rice powder) to ensure their features stood out in the dimly candle-lit chambers in which they entertained their male patrons.
It was in the Edo period (1603–1868), as Japan enjoyed two centuries of peace and prosperity under the Tokugawa shogunate, that cosmetic products became more affordable to the wider populace. The growing availability of bijin-ga––painted scrolls and woodblock prints depicting beauties––further helped to spread popular notions of attractiveness, and cemented the ideal of irojiro-hada (“light-complexioned skin”), which our expert guest Kaori Ishida describes as not simply “light skin tone,” but “smooth skin without blemishes, freckles, pimples, or moles. Flawless skin...a perfect skin condition.”

Ooku is one of Japanese series under the J Series Festival imported to Thailand's TV stations.
Ooku is the story of the picturesque lives of the women living in the hidden, maze-like inner structure of Edo Castle. Inside, the women wielded their beauty and knowledge: some of them to win the Shogun's love, obtain political power, or to climb the ladder of the Ooku hierarchy. Their lives were filled with romance, hatred, anger, envy, tears, and persecution. Of the three-century history of the Tokugawa Ooku, this drama focuses on the last several years. It tells the story of the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Ooku, and also the lives of the women who lived through these times.
